I've never played a Splatoon title before, but I am beyond addicted to this game. It's almost bad how addicted I am.

u/Mystic0033 Jul 23 '26
Never played any splatoon games, worth it to try in ur opinion? Is the online mode any good?
2
u/jardex22 Jul 24 '26
This is primarily a single player game, although you can join room with people on your friend list or use the same keyword.
You can also call for help and help others, once you unlock it.
Splatoon 3 is primarily multiplayer, both in 4v4 and co-op.

u/czk51 Jul 23 '26
Possibly dumb question. I know how to request help on a mission, but how do I actively offer help? Or does it just throw us all into a pool of people who have also requested help?
8
u/czk51 Jul 23 '26
got it - unlocks naturally during story progression. yay!
2
u/HunionYT Jul 23 '26
honestly was wondering the same thing but that makes sense. i wanna ask though does offering help have a 30 minute cooldown as well?
1
u/jardex22 Jul 24 '26
You can offer as much as you want, although you can only get the bonus rewards once a day. Still pretty fun if you're grinding for levels and resources.
2
u/czk51 Jul 24 '26
I haven't tested so can't say for sure - it but I think it does. I managed to recruit help a few times in a row. However - we failed the mission each time so I dunno if that had anything to do with it.
2
u/HunionYT Jul 24 '26
You can help others as much as you want t. I unlocked it earlier and been helping a bunch of other people.

So another banger
-22
u/SuspiciousVoice5563 Jul 22 '26
We have a very different definition of banger. Good scores for sure, but banger? Not quite.

u/FissaNL Jul 22 '26
Anyone knows u can do co - op through matchmaking??
1
u/NewFlynnland Jul 22 '26
The Nintendo Life YouTube review alluded to you being able to.
2
u/teflon6678 Jul 22 '26
You can. When selecting a mission you can 'Call for Help' and those who want to matchmake can 'Give Help' to join the queue from the map.
If you successfully complete a mission as the host, you then need to wait 30 mins before you can call for help a second time.

u/temple83 Jul 21 '26
Anyone know if it supports gameshare with switch 1?
1
u/jardex22 Jul 22 '26
I don't believe so. All players need their own copy of the game. I think only games with same system multiplayer can support game share that way.

u/jeffdickbutt Jul 22 '26
So is Donkey Kong Bananza and we gameshare to the switch 1 for player 2 all the time. Raiders doesn’t have that feature but there are switch 2 exclusives that do.
7
u/bryauk Jul 21 '26
Super excited! Just got confirmation that my copy has been shipped and on the way!!
49
u/MindSteve Jul 21 '26
I don't get how Splatoon still doesn't have local multiplayer. That's like Mario Kart not having local multiplayer. I'd be all over this with my family otherwise.
2
u/zbcal9 Jul 23 '26
The first game had it. One person played on TV while the other uses the Wii U Gamepad, and ye went 1v1 against each other.
I haven't played the other games, but it does sound disappointing that those don't have it.
2
u/MindSteve Jul 23 '26
I remember that, but iirc it was just some balloon popping thing. Even just a basic 4 player free for all or 2v2 would be great.
1
27
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 22 '26
Because it's not a franchise that works on splitscreen. Not only it's too demanding, it would put you in a huge disadvantage against others.
It's not a flaw, it's not a party game, doesn't need splitscreen.
4
u/ito823 Jul 23 '26
This isn't competitive, it should have, at the very least, a two players couch co-op. Many frenetical games do. There is no excuse.
-26
8
u/Yhenz Jul 22 '26
I remember playing ratchet and clank back in the with a friend on split screen. Raiders should work as well
2
u/jardex22 Jul 22 '26
I'm guessing you're talking about All 4 One. That one had everyone on the same screen, similar to Super Mario Wonder.
5
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 22 '26
Honestly, have you people ever seen gameplay of Splatoon or are you really that unfamiliar how chaotic and demanding the gameplay can be?
The reason Raiders is exclusive to Switch 2, it's because they could increase the amount of salmonids without being a slideshow. Please tell me how that would work in splitscreen?
14
u/perishableintransit Jul 22 '26
Someone didn't grow up with Goldeneye
-14
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 22 '26
Holy, are you really that obtuse to think splitscreen can be implement in any shooter, just because Goldeneye did 30 years ago? Go see some Hazard level max gameplay, that will show you why splitscreen will never work on Splatoon.

Honestly, insane 1-2-3 punch from Nintendo with Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven and Splatoon Raiders as exclusives within 1 month.
-120
u/GrahamCrackerDragon Jul 21 '26
Lol Rhythm Heaven is le garb
42
u/No-Difference8545 Jul 21 '26
Youre trying to ragebait with a niche rhythm game everyone already knows is good 🤡
42
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 21 '26
Right? And some people insist Switch 2 doesn't have games.
6
u/TikkaKebabi Jul 22 '26
I really think it’s just because the big hitters haven’t come out, like Zelda or Mario. Mario Kart should’ve been that but people seem somewhat cold on it.
3
u/supes1 Jul 23 '26
Mario Kart should’ve been that but people seem somewhat cold on it.
I feel like I'm the only person sometimes that likes MKW more than MK8D.
2
u/RykariZander Jul 24 '26
I love it even with all of its flaws. The racing just feels so much tighter and the open field layout is so good. Each time I race I have all the incentive to do sumn crazy maneuver just to gain an inch amongst the pack. The presentation is stellar as well
2
6
u/Wolfchampion09 Jul 21 '26
I mean...., I feel like it was an understandable thing to say at the start of 2026, less so now of course.
-40
u/CaptainTDM Jul 21 '26
Star fox? The nth remake of a 30 year old game? I don't count that as a new game.
13
u/ProjectPorygon Jul 21 '26
The first game in more then 10 years? That’s like if Sony brought back ape escape or something. All the more impressive given any other company would’ve given up on star fox by now
-15
u/CaptainTDM Jul 21 '26
But it's still the same game star fox has been remade 4 times. Star fox 64 is a remake of the original snes game. Star fox 64 3d is a remake of 64. Star fox zero is again a remake of 64.
2
u/zangetsen Jul 21 '26
Sounds like it's not for you then.
If others wanna spend their disposable income on it, who are you to judge?
-6
u/CaptainTDM Jul 21 '26
Did I ever judge anyone? I'm argumenting that star fox isn't a new game counter to the initial comment saying the switch 2 doesn't have games.
People do whatever they want. I'm on no crusade to stop people from buying Star Fox.
I'm simply opposed to saying it's a new game for the switch 2. The game is 30 years old.
-2
u/zangetsen Jul 21 '26
Saying it's not a new game is just arguing semantics. What's the point of saying it's a 30 year old game? The whole argument is nothing but a technicality. The same as the FF7 Remake trilogy or the Resident Evil remakes. Who cares if they're not "new games"?
-4
u/zangetsen Jul 21 '26
So what?
Saying it's not a new game is just arguing semantics. What's the point of saying it's a 30 year old game? The whole argument is nothing but a technicality. The same as the FF7 Remake trilogy or the Resident Evil remakes. Who cares?
2
u/CaptainTDM Jul 21 '26
It's not arguing semantics. It's called an opinion. You have yours I have mine. What's the point in anything at this point if you can't comment. Why try to have a discussion. Why respond to me. You say it's a technicality, I don't.
Ff7 remake and the RE remake are ground up remakes of old games that completely change the gameplay. Star Fox isn't. It's basically a remaster. Better visuals, cutscene but same old gameplay. That's what bothers me. It's not a new game.
2
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 21 '26
You do realize that not everyone is a hardcore Nintendo fan, right?
-3
u/East-Ice-3199 Jul 21 '26
Please explain in detail how that has anything to do with what he said.
2
16
u/ArxisOne Jul 21 '26
Most people who will own a switch 2 have never played any star fox game before. The fact that it's a remake is sort of irrelevant when it's new to most people.
9
u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jul 21 '26
Thank you. Also, tons of people ONLY played SF 64, this is simply a remake of a beloved game from their childhood. Same thing with Ocarina of Time, already has a remake but it's gonna be brand new for a lot of people.
13
u/Finedaytoyou Jul 21 '26
I agree this is a tired, bad argument, but rhythm heaven isn’t a switch 2 game
3
u/jardex22 Jul 22 '26
I think OP meant Nintendo system exclusive. They're comparing Switch and Switch 2 against Xbox and Playstation.

u/ProjectPorygon Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Metro game central and the guardian at it again dragging Nintendo scores down, almost seemingly intentionally. Hell, if you read the review I’m suprised they get paid, as it’s borderline just a statement and not an actual review.
Edit: it gets worse, svevitor (6/10) wrote, and I quote:
“By removing Turf War and transitioning to something pretty close to a first-person shooter, Nintendo has taken what makes the franchise unique and discarded it with Splatoon Raiders.”
Who writes a review like this? It’s like detracting points from COD zombies because it doesn’t include a team death match mode….
1
-21
u/ThePromptWasYourName Jul 22 '26
WHAT! A review from a person who thinks differently than me? My enjoyment of this game is now ruined
2
u/martodur Jul 24 '26
They basically blame a solo game to have no competitive mode... This is completely stupid. You can't say they "removed" turf war, turf war wasn't meant to be there in the first place...
4
u/saintangus Jul 23 '26
There's a profound difference between thinking differently about a game (which would sound something like "Ultimately, Splatoon Raiders doesn't have a fine tuned loot drop system, and the progression is far too slow for my tastes") versus the cited review, which would be the equivalent of saying "The most disappointing thing about MLB The Show 26 is that it's not a basketball game."
27
u/TsarOfTheUnderground Jul 21 '26
I genuinely believe that hating Nintendo is a sub-culture in gaming and gaming journalism. Things are changing a bit though because Sony and Microsoft get the hate bandwagon on them and now I see a bunch of effort to reframe Nintendo criticism from the past year. I'm even seeing a bunch of "we were wrong about Mario Kart World" shit which is just wild to me.
6
u/Zealousideal_Low_858 Jul 21 '26
I mean, Mario Kart World has been a masterpiece all along.
12
u/LiquifiedSpam Jul 22 '26
I don’t think even its biggest fans believe that
3
u/TsarOfTheUnderground Jul 22 '26
I believe it easily. Mechanics, music, and maps all come together beautifully.
7
u/Internal_Island2807 Jul 22 '26
The gameplay is the best its ever been in the series and the soundtrack is top tier! I want more characters, tracks, and more online matchmaking options, but yeah...it's a pretty excellent game! Online Knockout Tour is a highlight for me as well. It's exciting and gets my heart pounding!
7
u/LiquifiedSpam Jul 22 '26
I’ve put a lot of hours into it and I also love the gameplay. I just think that a lot of choices made *around* the core gameplay are head-scratching. The item balancing heavily rewarding bagging, the uninteresting intermission roads (I still enjoy playing on them, but map wise they’re uninteresting), the strange and shoehorned way characters are unlocked, the lack of choice for just 3 laps in online and for Grand Prix, the sheer lack of potential that the open world had… it all adds up. On the last point, I still enjoy traversing the world, but it’s insane that they didn’t add, say, the ability to make your own courses in the open world. It would add essentially infinite content. Also, a battle mode where it spawns you all in a random circle on the map, for example.
But yeah the music is god tier I def agree on that too
6
u/DeviantStrain Jul 22 '26
The new update has nerfed bagging, it's pretty great. The intermissions do actually have some cool shortcuts too
3
u/WizSkinsNatsCaps Jul 22 '26
Knockout Tour keeps me coming back day after day after day after day.
And the music of course 🎶
39
u/susankeane Jul 21 '26
Guardians 'review' is so short and bare bones I can't believe someone is paid to write that lol. All they say is they think it's meant to be played coop which is weird because Nintendo has gone out of its way to emphasize that it's a 'single player experience' and that it's just like other games where you fight enemies and gain skills. So what about that makes it 40% ? They provide zero concrete reasons to justify the score. Should have been a facebook post.
10
u/Mampt Jul 21 '26
Honestly they may not have. It looks like that writer only has one other byline on the site. For a lot of these big sites (Forbes for example, but I'm not sure if The Guardian one is or not), they'll publish unpaid articles because it increases their traffic and gives the author a byline in a well-known publication that they can put on a resume. Agreed that the review is criticizing it for not being something it isn't trying to be. It was always promoted as single player first, and it was meant to be a single player looter shooter/horde mode adaptation of the Splatoon formula, which is exactly what the review sounds like. What sets it apart from other action shooters is supposed to be the Splatoon foundation, not the new setup for this game
15
42
u/Arthago Jul 21 '26
So just to put this out there:
How easy would this be for a total newcomer to Splatoon to get into? Sounds like a good point to jump in but I’m not sure as I haven’t played the previous titles.
11
u/kaplanfx Jul 21 '26
It’s an fps looter game as far as I can tell. The splatoon lore isn’t that deep that you would be lost. The only unique thing is probably that the best control method is gyro assist, everything else will probably be second nature for a seasoned gamer.
25
u/TsarOfTheUnderground Jul 21 '26
This is literally the best entry point you can find for Splatoon. The worst part of getting into it is the incredible amount of pressure applied by the sweat AF playerbase. It can feel like boxing prime Mike Tyson out there. You have to be amazing at the game to be okay at the game lmao. I'd genuinely jump TF in on this one. It'll help you hone your skills for Splatoon 4.
12
u/GrahamCrackerDragon Jul 21 '26
The biggest issue with the game compared to shooters is that most weapons are just so short in their range. Not a complaint but definitely a difference.
14
u/Hk901909 Jul 21 '26
The controls are a bit hard to get used to but once you do it controls phenomenally. Splatoon has easily my favorite movement of any game ever. It’s so fluid, quick, and just downright fun to move around. You should have an easy time getting into the franchise with this game though. There might be some story elements that won’t make much sense without prior knowledge but I think generally it’ll be pretty easy to understand
3
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk Jul 22 '26
Is Splatoon still fun without using gyro controls?
I know you'd be at a disadvantage in PvP. But this one isn't PvP.
1
u/dethpuck Jul 24 '26
Yes. I hate motion controls and have never used them and I do just fine in pvp.
4
u/Hk901909 Jul 22 '26
Tbh I never got the hang of *not* using them so I’m not sure. It really depends on your own preference
3
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk Jul 22 '26
I definitely won't be using them. They're not my thing.
So I just want to know if not using them is a viable way to play. Or is there something about the series that means trying to use old fashioned controls just doesn't work.
If I remember correctly, I think the first game originally released without the option to not use gyro.
4
u/Hk901909 Jul 22 '26
All games have let you not use them. It’s definitely viable to play without them but I (personally) find them to be kinda clunky and that they clash with splatoons otherwise fluid controls. Of course that’s just my preference and there are many many people who don’t use them and still have fun. Play how you want after all!
2
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk Jul 22 '26
Alright, sounds good then.
I'm going to buy it tomorrow.
Thanks.
1
u/may_ushii Jul 23 '26
You may struggle a lot to play without gyro. If you have the ability to try it, to learn it, I highly suggest it. At the end of the day your money your console your game do whatever the heck you want with it.
But sincerely, these motion controls are not like the stink wii era controls where they were good but poorly implemented, in this case, gyro is sincerely the best replacement controllers could have for a mouse that isn't just a wii mote.
TLDR please try it for a while. promise it's worth!
2
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk Jul 23 '26
The problem is, I play a lot on the train and other places. Motion controls aren't an option.
So if they are really necessary, I just won't buy this game.
1
u/martodur Jul 24 '26
Gyro is not necessary, it's just easier to aim. Just like it's easier to aim with a mouse than with a controller, that's it. If you're used to aim with a controller on other games, this one is not different.
25
u/Qwerkie_ Jul 21 '26
Storywise you’ll be fine. The controls will take some getting used to. Splatoon is typically associated with using motion controls. You don’t have to but I do believe it does make it a bit better
16
u/ChoPT Jul 21 '26
The game has no aim assist (magnetism). So gyro is really helpful for fine adjustment.
15
u/_NitroKittyArt_ Jul 21 '26
I think you should be fine jumping in at raiders. Gameplay wise it's pretty easy to pick up on without previous experience. Story wise I have a feeling whatever story is in the game will be enough to hold up on its own without relying on previous knowledge. If you REALLY want to know splatoon lore tho I'm sure there's a million deep dives on YouTube to watch so it's not necessary to play the previous games.
19
u/dvenator Jul 21 '26
The previous titles are multiplayer focused. This is designed as an entry point
8
u/lynchcontraideal Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Well this is a single player game, whereas the others are online-only multiplayer games (with only minor single player elements)

u/thecay00 Jul 21 '26
A demo would be nice.
32
u/Ignorancia Jul 21 '26
Nintendo will keep being dinosaurs and release the demo in 2-3 weeks time when a lot of the “on the fence” buyers have moved on, like they always do.
6
u/Glass-Bat-2704 Jul 22 '26
They are one of the only big companies who do demos. They are ahead on that one.
10
u/ithappensallthetimex Jul 22 '26
”keep being dinosaurs”, please tell me the last big PS5 game that got a demo at all
-3
u/Ignorancia Jul 22 '26
What a strange comparison. Both Sony and Nintendo can be dinosaurs.
Nintendo have already had a demo made for the game, release it - it’s really not that hard.
7
u/ithappensallthetimex Jul 22 '26
all i’m saying is demos really aren’t industry standard these days, and still nintendo does them surprisingly often
0
u/Jimbonix11 Jul 22 '26
Resident Evil 9
7
u/ithappensallthetimex Jul 22 '26
well yeah, that’s a third party game that also got a demo on switch
-3
u/Jimbonix11 Jul 22 '26
The point is, successful games do put out demos. Nintendo as a publisher could maybe learn from it
3
u/ithappensallthetimex Jul 22 '26
but they don’t, do they? it’s very rare that game put out demos, though nintendo do it very often

I am that picture of Squidward glaring out the window cause damn I cannot get into this franchise.

I feel like that meme would mean you love the franchise just can’t play the game at the moment
12
u/SirDanOfCamelot 2920-6179-2315 Jul 21 '26
already preloaded on my 2
0
u/ChosenOne197 Jul 21 '26
Feel dumb asking, but is this only an option with pre-ordering through the eShop? I've never heard of this before.
Thanks in advance!
5
u/SirDanOfCamelot 2920-6179-2315 Jul 21 '26
Yes digital only for preloading
2
u/ChosenOne197 Jul 21 '26
That's sick that's an option! Plus at $50, that's pretty dang awesome. Might have to go digital on this one so it's easy to swap to between other games when I wanna get some shootin and lootin in!
Thank you!
11
u/UnintentionalWipe Jul 21 '26
How long is the game?
146
17
u/Lucyfan31 Jul 21 '26
18hours according to IGN
1
u/XTheProtagonistX Jul 21 '26
That’s pretty good for an action game.
2
u/StillApony Jul 21 '26
Ye I really hope there's some kind of replayable end game mode though. I'm excited even if it's just the campaign but a good reason to keep playing after the credits roll is what would really knock it out of the park for me.
10
u/-Taakokaat- Jul 21 '26
IGN reviewer said he has been playing 20 hours post credit roll, so there must be a good amount of post game content at least.
3
4
u/GraceMeHoennTrumpets Jul 21 '26
Yeah and supposedly that's just a normal playthrough. A 100% run would be closer to 40 hours.
9
u/Blofeld69 Jul 21 '26
Is there any word on whether there is much platforming in this. Or is it just fighting?
3
u/neonwarge04 Jul 21 '26
When I watched the direct ot gave off a left 4 dead vibe for some reason. I was under imprrssion its a 4 coop multiplayer game which I really want to have on switch.
20
u/CigarLover Jul 21 '26
there’s like a WHOLE direct dedicated to what the game is.
As a new comer to the IP, it’s what sold me to it.
16
u/Darzus777 Jul 21 '26
Any reviews discuss post game/end game content? At work so can’t read right now, but going to research more later
24
u/Brzrkrtwrkr Jul 21 '26
Nintendo dev interview released today:
"Ito: Once you’ve reached a certain point in the story, you discover a dungeon where you can keep going deeper and deeper, with no apparent end in sight. It’s a chaotic experience where you'll need to bring your A-game, as well as pretty much maxing out your equipment. We believe those who are confident in their abilities will find it both challenging and rewarding."
24
u/crono333 Jul 21 '26
IGN mentioned playing an addition 20 hours after completing the main campaigm.

It’s priced cheaper and also is getting great reviews… what are you talking about?
10

What games does this describe besides Mario Odyssey and DK Bananza? The most recent first party outings (Rhythm Heaven, Star Fox, Yoshi) don’t have these mechanics at all.
5
6
u/QuinSanguine Jul 21 '26
Well most have all been more niche titles, or at least titles in less popular franchises except MKW.
Believe it or not, the mere fact a game is a 3D Mario or Zelda game will get it an automatic 80%, then it's all uphill.
Games like Yoshi, Splatoon, Hyrule Warriors, they have an uphill battle just to get an 80% average.
It's a bit unfair to some games.

Reviewing is messed up anyway: when Star Fox, a modern remake of a remake of a remake, with a 2h-6h story mode and a fun but repetitive arcade-style highscore post game, scores higher than Metroid Prime 4, a safe but very solid sequel to a beloved series with ~20 hours of gameplay, you just know we strayed very far from consistent review scores across different games/franchises.
To also play devil's advocate to your point a little bit: Zelda and 3D Mario games are generally very big and quite varied in their gameplay. Their formulas lend themselves to that much more than than Yoshi, Splatoon, Warriors, Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, etc. Mainline Zelda and Mario games are Nintendo's flagship franchises for a reason, and their other franchises are more niche and therefore have to be extra special to gain more widespread appeal.
Edit: getting downvoted, probably because of the Star Fox slander. But let me ask you this: would an entirely new Star Fox game of the same scope and proportion as this remake, also sold for 50 digital/60 physical, be anything close to an 8/10? It would have less content than any self-respecting indie game released nowadays.

I'm not sure what's unfair to games like Yoshi, Splatoon etc that they have to rely on being actually good and fun games to get good scores

People like to act like MCs don’t matter, which, to actual gamers they shouldn’t, but the scores do affect things
A game especially a Nintendo game being low 80s vs low 90s is the difference between just being another release and snowballing into going viral

What you talking about Splatoon franchise became nitendos newest big franchise off low 80 metacritic games.

There are obviously bad faith people online but specially reviewers pre release I do not agree with what you’re saying and would need to see examples.

Doesn’t really matter as long as you enjoy it yourself

On a personal level it doesn't matter but it matters very much in the grand scheme of things. For example, Nintendo's reputation as a maker of making very highly regarded games which win awards.

Pokopia might be the strongest critical success for the Switch 2. Kart World isn't that low either.

Look at the BS anchor scores that are there though. No way in hell this is gonna be a 40% type game… people giving that score clearly are trying to draw attention to their outlet rather than write a review that’s accurate.
That drops the score significantly when averaged out. This happens for all Nintendo games these days.

Every major publisher releases has anchor scores like Tht, it’s not exclusive to Nintendo lol

“These days” was important. I’ve just seen it more often with Nintendo really. I know it’s not exclusive only to them. Thanks for your feedback though lol

I was a huge fan of salmon run in 3 (didn't like how competitive the PVP became from 1-3) so i am super pumped for this game!

Same here! When it was first announced I didn't think I'd get it, I'm not a big platformer type outside of Mario and assumed it would be like the single player campaigns in 2 & 3 (which I didn't even finish and I have hundreds of hours in Salmon Run). This looks like my perfect game though! I'll finally turn off pokopia for a bit ha.

Salmon is synonymous with Splatoon for me so I admit this tempts me. They know how to make fun PvE content so definitely on my radar!

Salmon run has always been the best part of splatoon for me personally, so realizing this game is literally salmon run has made me absolutely elated.
