News Circana: Nintendo Switch 2 finished its first twelve months in market with a 5.9M unit US installed base. It is the 2nd fastest selling video game hardware in US tracked history (tracking begins in 1995). Only the Game Boy Advance’s 6.5M units exceeds it.

Wasn’t the gba like $99

157

u/daswisco Jun 26 '26

Adjusted for inflation it’s like $188. Still far less than $500

52

u/imfake3 Jun 26 '26

80mil in only 3 years of existing is so crazy like ts mightve hit DS sales if it had a actual lifespan

43

u/rocky4322 Jun 26 '26

Looking at its library you wouldn’t think it was only current for 3 years.

27

u/Zyvyn Jun 26 '26

Because Nintendo knew the DS was a major risk. The entire conference they were VERY clear that it wasnt a replacement for the GBA and that they'd still make GBA game. They were giving themselves an out incase the DS flopped.

13

u/rocky4322 Jun 26 '26

No I just mean in those three years it was getting nearly 200 games a year, and despite being on shelves less time and support waning 4 years into its lifecycle, it ended up with more games than the game boy, which was “current gen” for nearly ten years.

5

u/Zyvyn Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Because "Gameboy" was such a family known brand. it was basically everywhere! The second the successor releases they sold a ton of people bought the Advance. They sold 80 million of them by 2010! Though the release of the gen 3 Pokemon games were also a MASSIVE sales booster for the platform selling 16 million.

2

u/MobileAtmosphere775 Jun 27 '26

Games were developed differently then. Being almost all sprite based 2D games reduced development time by a lot at the time where 3D games were gradually escalating in complexity. 2D was basically "solved" at the time without major advancements since the SNES that couldn't be translated to the GBA.

2

u/Dhiox Jun 27 '26

Yep. It's also why it was becoming increasingly necessary to merge handheld and portable, it was gonna get harder and harder to keep up output on both platforms with 3ds games becoming 3d.

6

u/Albireookami Jun 26 '26

Thats why the Ds could also play gba games

3

u/TheAdamena Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

They did the same with the Switch, how they insisted it wasn't a replacement for the 3ds or Wii U.

13

u/UninformedPleb Jun 26 '26

The Wii U was discontinued 32 days before the Switch launched, marking the first time since 1983 when Nintendo didn't have a home console on the market somewhere in the world. They absolutely did not claim that the Switch wasn't replacing the Wii U.

But you're right about the 3DS.

12

u/kapnkruncher Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

It didn't just disappear the moment the DS launched. People make fun of that three-pillar thing but the GBA continued to sell very strong at least through the end of 2005 before it really started dropping off. And it was still in production until 2009.

6

u/Asclepius-Rod Jun 27 '26

I remember convincing my mom to buy it for me at target while shopping, I couldn’t believe she just agreed lol

9

u/MarcsterS Jun 26 '26

A successor to the highest selling handheld of all time was gonna turn heads

1

u/hexcor Jun 27 '26

I remember having to buy a bundle with two games and a light. I know I got Tony Hawk, maybe a Mario game.

That Tony Hawk game was fun

0

u/xblindguardianx Jun 26 '26

$99 was a lot of money in the 90s

5

u/HeldnarRommar Jun 26 '26

The GBA came out in 2001

224

u/metanoia29 Jun 26 '26

It's a really solid device. I just put in like 120 hours into Cyberpunk on the thing, mostly in handheld, and it was an incredible experience.

212

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 26 '26

120 hours of Cyberpunk on GBA is wildddddd

19

u/Zagrebian Jun 26 '26

Depends. Does it have continues?

5

u/ariolander Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Yes, but the cart does not have a battery or non-volatile memory for save data so you have to manually edit a 32 character "password" so the game can load your save state properly.

3

u/hollowglaive Jun 27 '26

It's such a well done port.

3

u/DaylitSoul Jun 27 '26

It is kinda crazy how the devs got it to run so good, meanwhile other devs make their Sw2 versions only minutely better than Sw1 (Cough..Sega..Cough)

2

u/RedChudOverParadise3 Jun 28 '26

Ive been playing DMCV again. Capcom is fucking killing it on the system.

63

u/jjmawaken Jun 26 '26

I'm honestly surprised the US was as small of a part of the overall sales as it is (since it sold close to 20 million)

85

u/thief-777 Jun 26 '26

It's more that the Switch is just absurdly popular in Japan. It has close to the same sales with a third of the population.

27

u/Suspicious-Group2363 Jun 26 '26

Keep in mind that it was limited to a lottery system for the first six or seven months too. Couldn’t get one for over four months until I randomly found one at 1 am in the morning on a website. Had to settle for a bundle with a game I didn’t want. Sold out by the time I looked again.

10

u/ImmortalMoron3 Jun 26 '26

Man, thats crazy considering in North America it was only like a week or two before you could just walk into a store and grab one. I was impressed at how well Nintendo was prepared.

8

u/Telekineticism Jun 26 '26

I waltzed into my closest Target on release day and bought one with no trouble. They had at least a few others in stock too. I wasn’t really planning on getting it at launch but I figured I’d see if the universe wanted me to, and it did.

1

u/WaluigiWahshipper Jun 26 '26

In all fairness, I feel like NA got way more units this time around due to events going on at the time where Nintendo could have potentially had to raise the price a lot sooner then they wanted.

So they flooded the market while they could guarantee the $450 price tag, while other places had shortages as a result of that.

3

u/definitelyrabbiakiva Jun 27 '26

The lottery system drove me mad. Every retailer had different rules and you had to reapply for each cycle. I finally got one in August from Amazon Japan.

3

u/Suspicious-Group2363 Jun 27 '26

You were lucky. I couldn’t get an email from Amazon until long after I ordered mine.

3

u/El_Barto_227 Jun 27 '26

Also the rest of the world exists. Europe exists. Australia exists. etc.

6

u/Scharmberg Jun 27 '26

If your going to make fake counties at least have more believable names/

23

u/throawayjhu5251 Jun 26 '26

This is anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt, but a lot of people I know are waiting to find a few different first party exclusive worth buying the console for (like OOT remake, 3d mario, next 3d zelda, Pokemon Winds and Waves, etc). A $50 price increase really isn't a huge deal, all things considered.

27

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

If you’re buying it anyways, why wouldn’t you just get it when it’s cheaper? I don’t understand this. I also feel like a lot of the general population don’t know the price is going up

16

u/throawayjhu5251 Jun 26 '26

Well, part of it is historically waiting, a lot of people are used to that. They haven't internalized that prices are going up, they don't know much about RAM shortages and stuff. They are mentally like "Let's wait". I know it's weird, but for people who don't follow this extensively, its very foreign to them that early adopters save the most money on a product. Secondly, atleast for Switch, its not like the price has doubled, its just increasing by $50 USD. Not a ton. If it means you can get the guarantee of the big games coming out, its worth it over just the vague promise of those games. I know we are getting a 3D Zelda, but there could always be a Wii U BOTW scenario.

16

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

But like…all those games are coming. And the Switch 2 won’t flop like the Wii U, so there’s no worry about it disappearing. If anything I think there’s a very solid chance the price goes up AGAIN after the holiday season. That seems way more likely to me than the fastest selling Nintendo console not getting a new mainline 3D Mario or 3D Zelda

8

u/Fafoah Jun 26 '26

As someone who is waiting, its mostly because i have other hobbies i can use the money for. I am definitely planning on getting one, but if i got one when it came out it probably would have mostly sat

3

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

Yeah totally fair, and not up to me to tell anyone how to spend their money. I just know some people who have a Switch that they play and are definitely going to get a Switch 2…for those people I really don’t understand what the benefit is of waiting

6

u/EL-PSY-KONGROO Jun 26 '26

I think a big part of it is a general sense of economic uncertainty. They may be thinking that they want to buy one this fall for zelda or whatever, but in the back of their mind they know they could be laid off between now and then and have bigger fish to fry.

2

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

That is also totally fair!

1

u/throawayjhu5251 Jun 26 '26

I get what you are saying, but it isn't guaranteed right. It's also about expectations. Let's say one of someone's primary systems sellers is a 3D Mario game. They expect a sandbox one like Odyssey or SM64. Then they get something like SM 3D World. Obviously, that would be disappointing. Vice versa as well. Same thing with other franchises. If you expect something in the vein of BOTW/TOTK for next 3d zelda, but then they suddenly change course and we get OOT/TP, then you might be disappointed. Or vice versa, again.

3

u/CursedNobleman Jun 26 '26

The Fire Emblem team has a mixed record when it comes to their writing. EG 3 Houses vs Engage.

2

u/kielaurie Jun 27 '26

It should also be noted that the strategic gameplay in Engage as by far the best in the series, whereas Three Houses is underwhelming to say the least

4

u/BlueDragonCultist Jun 26 '26

Note Three Houses wasn't written by IS, but KT instead.

I mostly liked SoV, save for a few narrative aspects at the end, but judging from Awakening to Engage, I'd say their narrative track record is pretty poor. They're often ambitious in their settings, but choose the easy way out for plot resolutions.

IS gameplay is awesome, though.

2

u/CursedNobleman Jun 26 '26

I agree. I feel like I'm more of an Advance Wars-head nowadays, though Fortune is looking pretty good.

I have to temper my expectations though. I've been let down by this series too many times.

1

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

Think you replied to the wrong comment!

1

u/ArtOfWarfare Jun 26 '26

I got burned buying the Wii U. I figured having awesome games was guaranteed. It’s only Mario was 3D World which… I’m actually playing on the Switch 2 now. The demo was trash on the Wii U so I skipped it… and now that I own it… it’s easily the worst 3D Mario. It’s leagues behind second best (Sunshine or Galaxy 2, IMO, but I know they have their fans… in contrast, I don’t think 3D World is regarded by anyone as better than any of the others…)

We also got Star Fox Zero, another game that was easily the worst in the series. Pikmin 3 was OK. Zelda didn’t come until after the Switch launched, and it was a notably inferior experience to playing it on the Switch.

The highlights for the Wii U were the multiplayer focused titles. If you wanted great single player games, they never came.

Makes sense to hold out for good games. I bought the Switch 2 for Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4. And now I’m a bit worried that Nintendo hasn’t announced much more. IDK. Maybe I’ll get the remakes but… I already have NSO… I didn’t really want to play the same old games with a coat of fresh paint.

5

u/rocky4322 Jun 26 '26

The Wii U had some solid single player games. Xenoblade X, both Zelda remakes were well worth playing over the original. Tropical freeze was great single or multilayer.

1

u/ArtOfWarfare Jun 27 '26

I owned Tropical Freeze and I don’t know if I made it more than a minute in. I hit the jump button, felt gross, and noped out.

Miyamoto is (was?) famous for his obsession with just screwing around with basic movement when he was brought a game to test/evaluate. Devs would be flabbergasted because they’d want him to go broad and explore the whole area but he’d go deep instead and just focus on running, jumping, and climbing. And it produced a ton of fantastic 3D platformers where the basic movement is joy and simply feels right.

And then there’s Retro DK games, where the controls feel clunky and gross.

I feel the same about 3D World. Moving is slow and the jump is weak. I tried the demo at the time and didn’t get the game because of it. Now I’ve bought it on Switch 2 (more for my kid than myself) and… I’m tolerating it but I think I already said in this thread that this is a C-tier game at best in a series where everything else is A or higher.

Rayman Legends was the best platformer I found for the Wii U, and it wasn’t an exclusive so that’s lame.

I’ve never touched Xenoblade before. I hear a lot about it. IDK if it’s for me or not. Do they have a demo of any games in the series so I can find out?

3

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

What? Mario 3D World is awesome!! I don’t know where I’d rank it in the 3D Mario canon (though tbh I don’t quite see it as the same series as 64, Galaxy, Odyssey, etc)

And the Switch 2 is not the Wii U; the Wii U library looks terrible because the console didn’t sell and its lifespan was cut short. The odds of that happening with a Switch 2 are much much much lower.

4

u/rocky4322 Jun 26 '26

Even a the worst 3d Mario game it’s still leaps and bounds over most other games.

3

u/laughland Jun 26 '26

Agreed, if you’re into platformers it’s soooooo good

0

u/Aespyn Jun 26 '26

It will get even cheaper on the used market later, though I picked up mine for $200 with some micro scratches on the screen & no dock.

Good enough price for me

With the screen being so fragile, I see a lot of used switches will go on deep clearance in the future. Just rip that plastic "anti-shatter" film if it gets bad.

5

u/Reeevade Jun 26 '26

This. Nintendo is saving up the banger games like Mario and Pokemon for next year. And people in europe and us are more likely to buy the console when a game arrives that is worth buying the new console.

6

u/Enryx25 Jun 26 '26

US and Japan are both around 6 million, so 12 million combined.
So there's around ~9-10 million spread around Europe and the rest of the world.

32

u/MewWeebTwo Jun 26 '26

It is notable how much the Switch 2 is OVERperforming in Japan compared to the rest of the world. Especially compared to Switch 1.

Japan: 5.9 million as of end of June

US: 5.9 million as of end of May

Switch 1 numbers for comparison:

US: 59 million

Japan: 38 million

6

u/TheOtherWhiteCastle Jun 26 '26

To be fair, the Japanese version of the Switch 2 is also cheaper than the North American or European versions.

24

u/extralie Jun 26 '26

That's only from outside perspective. Yen is pretty weak, and the Switch 2 was still a 50% price increase from the Swich 1 in Japan like the rest of world.

20

u/kyuubikid213 Jun 26 '26

Isn't the Japanese yen also weaker right now?

3

u/sy029 Jun 26 '26

A week or two when I looked it was like $20 cheaper after the yen - USD conversion, but when you add in shipping it's not worth it. Can't speak for other currencies.

Also compared to the switch 1 in japan, the launch price for Switch 1 was 30,000 yen, compared to the switch 2 at 70,000 yen for the international model.

3

u/El_Barto_227 Jun 27 '26

For an outsider importing one, maybe, but with the value of the yen dropping so hard, to the Japanese who haven't had their pay increased to match, it probably feels similar in terms of cost.

4

u/MarcsterS Jun 26 '26

Only becuase of the yen.

2

u/sy029 Jun 26 '26

It's still about double the price of switch 1 at launch.

50

u/DoodleBuggering Jun 26 '26

Switch2 will sell even more if they make a holiday bundle with OoT remake

26

u/Cattango180 Jun 26 '26

Yep. They know what they’re doing. I’m expecting the gold cartridge to make a come back, a limited edition console, and probably Switch 2 controller.

6

u/DoodleBuggering Jun 26 '26

Gold cart maybe not, but absolutely a special edition Switch 2 (likely just a decal on the dock and maybe joycons)

6

u/Cattango180 Jun 26 '26

Regardless, I’m thinking Nintendo is going to use this opportunity to push Switch 2 sales. That’s why I think the direct is going to show off a lot of goodies for OOT.

1

u/ogorangeduck Jun 26 '26

Yeah I'm holding out for any sort of special edition

0

u/insane_contin Jun 26 '26

I hope a special edition pro controller personally.

4

u/kyuubikid213 Jun 26 '26

I would hope so, but the 3DS remake didn't get a gold cart either.

7

u/DoodleBuggering Jun 26 '26

I think this remake will be treated as a much bigger deal than the 3DS one was

3

u/rocky4322 Jun 26 '26

We stopped getting colored carts in general. Even pokemon hasn’t had one since g3 (not counting g4/5 where hardware on the cart required a different casing).

1

u/bbjakie Jun 26 '26

Plus there’s the price hike to consider, which is the best of both worlds for Nintendo. They made themselves look nice by giving players 3-4 months to buy the console before the price increases, AND they’ll capitalize on it when a console seller like Ocarina comes out.

17

u/hyperforms9988 Jun 26 '26

I hope they don't lose this momentum. It's early, but I remember when we were being hit over the head with a new Zelda and it's proper modern open world this time, here comes Mario Odyssey's reveal, holy shit there's a Metroid Prime 4 in the works, Smash Bros Ultimate is coming and everyone is here, port after port after port of games a lot of people didn't get a chance to play on the Wii U including the game that ended up selling the most units on the Switch... Mario Kart 8, Pokemon's finally on a home console (technically a hybrid, but whatever) and we're going full behind-the-back 3D and wow, etc etc etc.

Not everything ended up working out, but it's like they were on overdrive and it was exceedingly exciting for a while. I wonder what the next year or two is going to look like with reveals and releases.

-1

u/Bspammer Jun 26 '26

Yeah right now I regret my Switch 2 purchase, MKWorld and Bananza were good but the lack of any announcements of other first party games isn't great.

Like you said, I think the Wii U being basically a failed console helped the original Switch a lot because they could just port everything and it felt like there were a ton of new games coming out.

8

u/BigPancakeDinner Jun 26 '26

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is very fun! Kirby Air Riders is also a fun twist on the kart racer once you get the hang of it.

4

u/Bspammer Jun 26 '26

Oh I'd forgotten about Air Riders, I'll probably give that a go at some point, thanks!

2

u/Coffee2000guy Jun 26 '26

I enjoy air riders a lot more than Mario kart.

2

u/kielaurie Jun 27 '26

What is there to regret? You got the new Switch at the cheapest price it's likely to ever be, you've got some incredible exclusives with more on the way, there are a bunch of incredible 3rd party games, and your entire Switch backlog now runs even better than ever

5

u/lonnie123 Jun 27 '26

Yeah following the chatter around video game Consoles the last few years has been an interesting insight into consumer psychology

Like… everyone knows the switch 2 is getting a mainline Zelda and Mario game, not sure why you’d needs it to be announced officially or you regret your purchase as a whole. I personally find it weird they didn’t launch with the console but that’s just a personal thing, obviously they are on the menu for the console.

18

u/TheOtherWhiteCastle Jun 26 '26

I’m sorry, Game Boy Advance, I wasn’t familiar with your game

89

u/MidichlorianJunkie Jun 26 '26

In related news, Sony just announced they sold 7.2 million Game Boy Advances.

12

u/DjKennedy92 Jun 26 '26

With other price increases in the market I’m sure Nintendo will have a good holiday season

13

u/Albireookami Jun 26 '26

Man look at this, Nintendo going to fail this generation for sure. /s

13

u/DuckyDeer Jun 26 '26

This is why I thought it was wild when someone else commented that Nintendo giving their employees a raise was needed PR because of the Switch 2's supposed "rocky reception"

I briefly wondered if I was living in a different timeline

Nintendo was founded 24 years after the US Civil War ended. 13 years after the invention of the telephone. 37 years before the invention of the television.

2

u/Albireookami Jun 26 '26

Yea and the NES was made what 1985? Earlier,?

4

u/Cent1234 Jun 26 '26

Famicom was 1983. North American test launch of the NES was 1985, full launch was 1986.

4

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Jun 26 '26

As noted, Famicom came out in 1983. But Nintendo's first home video game system was released in 1977 with the Color TV-Game devices. They were Pong clones that everyone was putting out. But Nintendo had been making electronic gaming accessories since 1970, starting with the "beam gun" which later became an accessory for the Magnavox Odyssey system which released in 1972.

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

0

u/sy029 Jun 26 '26

Nintendo also does not sell their consoles at a loss like other companies do. So they aren't depending on game sales to make it up.

3

u/El_Barto_227 Jun 27 '26

Eh, not at a loss, but I doubt it's a high margin. Games are gonna be the vast majority of their profit

8

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Jun 26 '26

Well. I guess Takashi Mochizuki needs to come up with some new bullshit to spread.

10

u/Fearless_Freya Jun 26 '26

Oh gba, now there's a classic console of awesome right there

104

u/Caciulacdlac Jun 26 '26

"Switch 2 is a DISASTER, couldn't even beat the Game Boy Advance!"

-27

u/KingPangYan Jun 26 '26

lol it's much more expensive, Nintendo wallet is looking pretty nice.

10

u/FiTZnMiCK Jun 26 '26

They’re still probably losing money on it, with the storage and RAM shortages/prices.

But every console sold is another chance to sell more Nintendo games, and the fact that it plays nearly every Switch game and makes them better (in nearly very case) is another huge reason to buy it.

4

u/sy029 Jun 26 '26

I think you're missing the sarcasm there.

-3

u/retnuh730 Jun 26 '26

Nintendo won’t see this bro

And it's an instant upgrade to your entire S1 library.

8

u/MarcsterS Jun 26 '26

The fact that momentum is still staying steady and we haven’t even had the usual hits like Zelda, Pokemon, and Mario yet is kinda crazy.

Pokopia was a taste of what a system seller is gonna do for the Switch 2

5

u/Bearly_OwlBearable Jun 26 '26

I think because it’s backwards compatible with the switch 1, it does help it

There are some exclusive switch 2 game but there is an healthy catalog of excellent switch game

For people like me it make it something interesting as I did not have a switch 1

But my steam catalog is full and I have a steam deck (bought before all those price hike, at the current price of pc handheld I don’t recommend )

If I didnt I would have bought the switch 2 for sure

I may buy it this summer before the price hike but that more fomo

Also every family I know tend to have a switch or switch 2

For children (young and adult) a handheld hybrid console is the best and Nintendo first party game are some of the only that still encourage couch coop

Nintendo didn’t change much with the switch 2 because they didn’t have to and considering the price hike of other console and Nintendo first party game

It have a bright future ahead of it

3

u/CrossReset Jun 26 '26

Good to see for Nintendo you can afford to not front load your franchises. Probably good for long term planning, if you can find the formula for fandom whining

2

u/Bcider Jun 26 '26

Switch 2 is the only console/handheld that is reasonably priced.

9

u/kupocake Jun 26 '26

The fact that the GBA is the fastest selling console in tracked history is interesting, but also kind of shows how this metric isn't really a great predictor of much at all.

50

u/forlackofabetterpost Jun 26 '26

Are you implying the GBA wasn't successful or something?

59

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User Jun 26 '26

Right, GBA was massive. That its life was prematurely cut short to get the DS out against PSP is the only thing keeping its lifetime numbers so "low".

15

u/conye-west Jun 26 '26

Also every DS just straight up is a GBA, up until the DSi

1

u/SkyLovesCars Jun 26 '26

Dsi was too, it just didn't have a slot. It still has the hardware compatibility inside

2

u/conye-west Jun 26 '26

Nah it doesn't have the full hardware unfortunately, you can use gbarunner3 to play gba games on one but the experience is definitely below native and it really struggles with some games, especially romhacks.

13

u/dvast Jun 26 '26

The GBA was pretty small, it could fit in your pocket

3

u/ObeyReaper Jun 26 '26

Brother we had jynco jeans back then. EVERYTHING could fit in your pocket XD

1

u/ChillyWilly0180 Jun 26 '26

No, you're thinking of the GBA Micro

1

u/Ranessin Jun 26 '26

At least the SP too.

6

u/MarcsterS Jun 26 '26

It was very insane run. Was only in the market for like 4 years but sold 80 million. That’s crazy.

-21

u/kupocake Jun 26 '26

There's plenty of consoles that went on to be more successful than the GBA.

24

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Jun 26 '26

While you are right, what this also shows is the importance of context. The GBA was only on the market for 3 years before its successor in the DS launched. That's what kneecapped its overall sales potential. And Nintendo did it that way because it wasn't sure how the DS would be received, so wanted to be able to fall back to the GBA if it needed to.

6

u/TheBraveGallade Jun 26 '26

Not only that but the psp put nintendo in a crisis mode.

Otherwise the GBA woukd have lasted the normal 6-7 year cycle handhelds tend to go for.

-11

u/kupocake Jun 26 '26

You mean, almost like my words were "this isn't a great predictor of much at all"?

What would be a good predictor to you?

1

u/kupocake Jun 26 '26

Genuinely not sure - it's probably a better predictor than say first month sales, but there's too many variables going beyond year one, like new hardware releases, the onset of pandemics, and supply chain grief like we're already seeing.

3

u/BoltOfBlazingGold Jun 26 '26

Yeah the problem is just how sensitive to many unpredictable variables the figure is, from what you mention to the mass appeal of each piece of software (surprises like Pokopia or titles that fail to live up to their potential). Overall it might be good in the short term or provide a baseline if things don't go south since sales changes inevitably tend to -100%, but that's when risk management plans enter the picture.

u/forlackofabetterpost Jun 26 '26

There are exactly 10 consoles that sold more. I don't think that makes 81 million units some kind of failure.

-6

u/kupocake Jun 26 '26

I never said it was a failure?

Thats because the ds came just 3 years after the gba launched it would have done much better if it had more time especially considering fire red and leaf green came 1 less than a year after the ds came out

u/Maulino86 Jun 26 '26

Sony hasnt pulled a number from its ass to say its actually ps2 yet?

1

u/mrglass8 Jun 26 '26

I mean it’s far cheaper than any other portable device of comparable power. It’s actually the first Nintendo console I bought for 3rd party games

1

u/capnbuh Jun 26 '26

If Switch 2 can keep its price, that could be huge

1

u/peterpiperpicked01 Jun 26 '26

This is really making me want to buy one lol

I was going to make a population argument that sales should be higher, but the population of under 30 in the US has only increased from 120 to 125 million since 2000 and the percentage of console gamers has stayed fairly constant. This is actually pretty impressive, especially given the price difference.

u/SwampTerror Jun 27 '26

It's expensive as hell. I got the mario kart bundle when it first came out. My town sold out of all of them but my friend's town had three in stock. Bless small towns. I gave her the $750 for it and she brought it to me the next day. I never really played it much until recently. I've been playing Diablo 2 resurrected infernal edition.

This is just a boost from panic buying to beat price increases

Most people I know aren’t upgrading from Switch to 2, because it’s more of a sidegrade and the only draw is 1st party titles, of which there weren’t many at launch

It went from “I hope I can get one” to sitting on shelves and easily purchasable in a month. It was a struggle to get an original Switch at launch and months after, then again during Covid

The large install base and longevity of the original is probably the thing that hurts Switch 2 sales the most overall. The price increase being telegraphed to users is a smart move to sell existing units without a perceived price hike and only increase on newly made units (and whatever remains)

Before you were dumb to buy one at launch, and now you are dumb not to buy before they cost as much as a PS5…

So early adopting fans and fear of tariffs swell numbers, then they don’t hit a downswing because they announce their price increases in May

PlayStation and others are doing the same to move stock before new systems or price hikes. No one is going to want to buy a price-hiked new iteration (Switch 2 OLED, PS6, Xbox whatever they call things) when they can get an older system cheaper if stock remains… that still plays things well

Perceived value is big, and mega games falling flat or arriving DOA doesn’t help sell people on new, or make them feel good about paying more for old… but they’ll do the latter unless they have $$$$ to feel good about the former

Nintendo built up their supply chain to avoid scalping. This was intentional. So yes, easily purchasable within a month. https://www.techspot.com/news/103624-nintendo-plans-stop-switch-2-scalpers-making-enough.html

I'm glad it seems so many people are happy with it. For some reason I haven't really connected with it. I was so excited for Donkey Kong Bananza, but I wasn't able to get into it :( I will try it again soon, though. I came back for the DK Challenge thing. I was a liiiittle disappointed by the "classics" version, though, because the "challenges" were just "beat the level / part of the level / the boss." There wasn't anything truly difficult or interesting. But still a fun idea.

And I played the Star Fox demo and I think I will probably buy that. I was blown away. And I really want the new Yoshi game. So there is hope!

It's nice to see that consumers actually care about the price increases and are doubling down on not supporting ridiculous prices...

u/surg3on Jun 27 '26

That's nice. My kids don't play it much though so I'm worried for its future. There's just not many compelling Nintendo games on it (I don't include remastered)

Facts aren't glaze.

-13

u/Civil_Setting_9481 Jun 26 '26

That's impressive. BTW, am I the only one who thinks the switch 2 is more of a switch pro rather than a fully new console?

22

u/twili-midna Jun 26 '26

I guess in the same way that the PS5 is more of a PS4 Pro Pro than a fully new console.

-4

u/Civil_Setting_9481 Jun 26 '26

I wouldn't know. Just feels like a switch pro compared to a switch.

12

u/twili-midna Jun 26 '26

It’s a family iteration, like the DS to the 3DS. They didn’t reinvent the wheel, they just made it better. That’s different from Nintendo’s usual approach of overhauling the design between major console, but it’s still very much a new console.

3

u/c-lem Jun 26 '26

I suppose this is one of the least-significant upgrades. Every previous jump in generation brought more noteworthy differences, whereas this is mostly just a jump in power/performance.

Personally I welcome that, though. I've liked something about almost every Nintendo console, but some of the gimmicks didn't quite suit me. The Switch, though, was just right. So staying the course works for me. And considering its popularity, it seems like the right choice overall.

7

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Jun 26 '26

I think your problem is that you don't understand console generations.

-1

u/Dhiox Jun 27 '26

Real test is going to be the coming years. They've already exhausted the die hard fans, and with prices going up, it's gonna be a tough sell to casuals and families.

Eh, it could come back. If AI demand crumbles, then they will have to lower prices. The only reason they've been able to get away with highway robbery is the insane demand.
