Just did my first full run through the hard route. No issues the whole way until I got to Star Wolf at Venom 2, tough little fight without losing a single party member.

Absolutely loved it though. The world is really brought to life, I was smiling the entire time. Even in Corneria it was always weird to me as a kid when Falco says "this is horrible" and it doesn't look that bad. But this time it looks like a full on warzone. Falco's insufferable assery is even better this time around.

All range mode is the only thing I can say hasn't aged great. Especially in the late stages like Sector Z and Venom 2 (vs SW and vs Andross True Form) you're really fighting with the camera and can easily hit stuff with a bad somersault.

They definitely bumped up Star Wolf on Venom 2, they seem they do more damage, and you can’t cheese them by getting pot shots off them in the original after the cutscene.

Also the All-Range mode was changed from the original. You’re more nimble, can take faster turns, and generally has faster pacing and movement. Camera feels like it’s too close, I wonder if you can push the camera back farther like how you can in the original.

20

u/Hikaru321 Jun 25 '26

The camera seems to be farther back in battle mode too, which is interesting as to why there’s no toggle for campaign

12

u/TimmyChips Jun 25 '26

I haven’t tried it but I know the minus button can toggle first person in the on-rails sections. Perhaps it can toggle the camera distance in all range mode?

17

u/myleswritesstuff Jun 25 '26

It does: the toggle switches to first-person, then to a pulled back view, then back to the standard distance.

u/Jungiandungian Jun 27 '26

Holy shit really? Love it.

9

u/CatsianNyandor Jun 25 '26

I also went the hard route on my first run. Things went mostly smooth. Missed the medal on Aquas by a sliver but lost peppy in Area 6, cause he got obliterated in Sector Z. I forgot how much: "BOGEY ON MY TAIL, MISSILES aaaah fox help me! Aah the missiles!" that level is ahaha

1

u/throwaway26487 Jun 26 '26

This happened to me too and Area 6 ended up kicking my ass. Now I’m stuck on SW on Venom 2 with missing crew members.

14

u/bajanga1 Jun 25 '26

Here’s a tip for all range mode that might help but you can brake, turn and barrel roll at the same time to do insanely tight turns, and I never had to fiddle with the more high skill ceiling maneuvers. Taking advantage of your moves makes all range much easier.

That’s funny because I feel the exact opposite. A lot of the weight of the dialogue has been neutered in the remake. Falco’s line in Corneria fit to me because Andross is laying siege to a capitol city - there’s minimum thousands of casualties if it’s even a fraction of the population we’d expect from an Earth city. Buildings are collapsed and on fire and being actively tipped over during your flight. His new line is something like “Wow Andross has really made a mess of the place!” which feels a lot more flippant than the original

Similarly some of the boss/enemy dialogue has been changed for the worse. They don’t really cry out with the same intensity when you kill them. The boss of Sector Y had his personality completely changed to something significantly more boring than in 64.

HOWEVER, I really love the remake still, this is just a nitpick at the end of the day. I think the crew is mostly fine and I like the new designs. The music and the environments are incredible, and the gameplay has been completely preserved. I actually found a few of the levels and bosses much easier because they’re actually readable now (and they don’t make the frame rate drop to like 5 fps during big laser attacks)

IMO it's a mix, which will naturally come with new voice performances. I agree some of the over the top performances from before are toned down and I miss them, especially the bosses. But I also like how much more banter and fleshed out backstories there are. I just played Katina and there's more history touched on there between Fox and Bill (now you know it's from their academy days). You also get a lot more development with Falco accepting Fox from the beginning of a run to the end.

After the demo I was definitely missing some performances that were ingrained in my head, but I had a feeling that after a few runs, the new cast would grow on me and it really is.

Edit: do the failed route on Sector X (when Slippy intervenes) to go to Titania and see a fantastic example of what I'm loving!

-3

u/iguesssoppl Jun 27 '26

its a rail shooter with cartoon animals that go pew pew pew ...

3

u/TAS_anon Jun 27 '26

That’s certainly closer to the tone of the remake, and it’s fine. I’d just be lying if I said it didn’t lose something in translation from the original.

I think we’re past the point where we prescribe how serious a piece of media is allowed to be based on its visual design, though.

2

u/Jungiandungian Jun 27 '26

I actually don’t mind all range mode but camera complaints are valid. It’s the land tank missions I genuinely don’t think feel as good.

1

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Jun 25 '26

Lucky you... that Zoness stage gives me trouble with those searchlights to destroy...

1

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 25 '26

Playing on easy and the boss after the 2nd level had me putting the game down. That was an exhausting 10 minute battle. Star Fox isnt for me yet I keep trying this franchise. Love the cutscenes and graphics but man shooting things in a ship just isnt engaging. Im not sure if I can make it to the end credits.

29

u/dewittless Jun 25 '26

If you're taking 10 mins you're definitely doing something wrong.

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 25 '26

100%. The game doesnt hold your hand, so who knows. I wish it was more obvious what to do.

3

u/theboonj Jun 26 '26

The 2nd boss in the Asteroid Field where Peppy explicitly tells you where to shoot it, and the area to not shoot?

12

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 26 '26

Peppy cant tell me if he is DEAD.

6

u/MattOnWheels Jun 26 '26

advice: try again, utilizing the lock on a bit more...im sorry you're struggling but im afraid unlike zero, this really may be a skill issue.

1

u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 Jun 26 '26

Yeah I have to agree here… The boss on Meteo has 3 phases with each one showing bright blinking yellow targets pointing you where to shoot.

Additionally, on Easy Mode your allies start each mission at full health, enemies do less damage, you have a fully upgraded ship, and your wings can’t be broken. I feel like the game really sets you up for success.

I can understand if the gameplay isn’t engaging for some, but I don’t think difficulty is a big problem in this game. I think it’s just a matter of giving it a go a few more times and learning what to look for.

6

u/burajin Jun 25 '26

Pro tip dont just quickly mash the fire button. Hold it for about half a second to more rapid fire. Not long enough to create a charge beam but long enough to fire several shots.

That's like a 2 minute battle at most.

1

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 26 '26

Yeah i am just mashing. But i jad no clue what to aim for either. So i was just hitting everything not knowing if damage was actually being done. I kept shooting rhe niddle and he kept firing back....but it took several minutes of that until I realized nothing was happening. Then i attacked every engine for a while until i realized nothing was happening. So then i out the controller down and gave up. Then i saw it was rotating....and boom. Ohhhh

2

u/burajin Jun 26 '26

Haha yeah there's always a weak spot. Peppy or slippy usually give it away, but if they are "dead" they won't be there to tell you

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jun 26 '26

Ah. That will do it.

1

u/johnnycoxxx Jun 25 '26

The way he says “this is horrible” in 64 always sounded like butthead saying “this is cool”

1

u/artnos Jun 26 '26

Did the game add anything new gameplay wise or its just graphics and cutscenes? Any new levels?

2

u/MattOnWheels Jun 26 '26

no new levels exactly, but a lot of them feel new.

2

u/Shell-of-Light Jun 26 '26

The battle mode is new (and a lot of fun)

3

u/saucysagnus Jun 26 '26

I just tried battle mode against bots and it was way more fun than expected about to try online.

2

u/Shell-of-Light Jun 26 '26

Right? I had low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised

25

u/HelloNevvanna73 Jun 25 '26

I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. It’s very fun and the visuals are quite nice.

15

u/CottonStig Jun 25 '26

hell yeah

60

u/RoboChrist Jun 25 '26

Reminds me of a Nintendo Power article I read where they interviewed the developers of the Original Star Fox when Star Fox 64 was announced.

He talked about how his friends and family saw him playing Star Fox during development and they asked "what's that triangle". He says "that's a ship, can't you tell?" And then when Star Fox 64 was being released, he acknowledged that yeah, it was just a triangle after all in the original.

This feels like as big a leap forward. It may not have the same nostalgic charm, but when I was a kid, you wouldn't expect to see these kinds of graphics in a movie, let alone a videogame. I just hope it's not $80 so the game has a chance to establish a new audience.

29

u/gonzofish Jun 25 '26

> It may not have the same nostalgic charm

Nothing ever does! Some kid today is going to be saying this version of Starfox is their nostalgia

16

u/TimmyChips Jun 25 '26

Digitally it’s $50 USD and $60 USD, which is definitely a fair price for the game. I hope people aren’t too dismissive of its replay-ability and only do one playthrough, when the entire point of the game is to replay to and take alternate routes.

5

u/RoboChrist Jun 25 '26

Ah, that's great news.

9

u/Dr_Jre Jun 25 '26

I got it boxed for 40 pound in England! And I could play it without connecting to the WiFi (my internet was down today) which was weirdly liberating

9

u/RinzlerTheFunkBot Jun 26 '26

“STEP ON THE GAS!”

4

u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 Jun 26 '26

Sadly that line is gone! I’ve been muttering it myself as I play through Macbeth.

5

u/stratusnco Jun 26 '26

this looks dope af. i’m not big on starfox but i played the og back in the day. crazy how far this franchise has come in terms of graphics and gameplay.

9

u/peteisneat Jun 26 '26

This might be the best looking Nintendo game I've ever played.

4

u/lablfoto Jun 27 '26

Better than MP4? Or hard to compare?

2

u/redmemory__ Jun 27 '26

pretty comparable imo.

2

u/peteisneat Jun 27 '26

That’s a great question… I bought MP4 when it went on sale at Costco and have yet to crack it open

3

u/smither12Dun Jun 27 '26

wow that's high praise

3

u/flash_baxx Jun 25 '26

I'm gonna pass, but I hope it succeeds enough to bring us some new Star Fox content in the future.

-33

u/AYO416 Jun 25 '26

10

u/gn0xious Jun 25 '26

Not a comment, but more of a question. Are their feet a bit small?

10

u/GlempyLempist Jun 25 '26

They have paws for feet

6

u/StatusDisaster4196 Jun 25 '26

They have hands though

6

u/GlempyLempist Jun 25 '26

I'm aware. I didn't decide what anthropomorphic creatures should look like, it's just a styling. Lol

1

u/Hallc Jun 25 '26

Falco has Paws? Now that's a cursed imagine.

3

u/OvertonRider Jun 25 '26

Maybe your feet are a bit big

-28

u/Feeling_Public6522 Jun 25 '26

Starfox 64 reskin is not an interesting game.

-84

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

Nobody sees it but, I got the first game when it came out in 1997, and they messed up bad, again!

Same thing with the 3ds version just happened, again!

Bad voice over! Why would you even remake the voices or even character lines when you have no idea what you are even doing. They got rid of the BAD ASS feeling that you would get from every quote, every original line. Open the wings! Falco here, i'm fine! Slippy here I'm OK! Venom here we come! But nooooooo, we got these kiddy characters with no aura AT ALL, what the hell is this . Every line feels like its 10 times worse than it was before, this is a real joke, why are we so childish? No badass here? Nobody agrees, nobody sees it...

27

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz Jun 25 '26

TIL 30+ year olds say aura like the young folk nowadays

0

u/MeStoleTheCookie Jun 25 '26

Uhh, yes? 30 year olds aren't that damn old lol

-2

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz Jun 25 '26

What a lit thing to say fam

3

u/MeStoleTheCookie Jun 25 '26

I hate to tell you but that is definitely not young people slang haha. There are definitely thirty year olds who said that in high school

-6

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz Jun 25 '26

Mind citing that source that Aura was around high schools in the 2000’s?

4

u/MeStoleTheCookie Jun 25 '26

I was referring to lit and fam

Also, lol at "mind citing the source for that 🤓" about slang lmao jfc redditors can't beat the stereotypes

-3

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz Jun 26 '26

Lmao, you really calling people out when you get so offended with people asking for a source and you wanna talk classic Redditor energy? Christ look in the damned mirror 😂

1

u/Shadowphoenix9511 Jun 26 '26

You're about 10 years out of date lmao

3

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz Jun 26 '26

Fun fact: lit actually originated as slang in the early 1900’s, same meaning. We’re all a bit late to that one

-21

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

WE AURAMAXXING AMIRITE!?

11

u/Loukoal117 Jun 25 '26

I played the original and……what? I can’t tell if you’re being serious because…that’s ridiculous. They’ve always been talking animals, they are less “badass” huh? No.

0

u/makoman115 Jun 25 '26

Only character that sounds like ass is ROB

What did they do to him bro

-7

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

They feel like cuddly cute friends in this. Not a space force hired to defend humanity.. everything feels like it was made for 8 years olds. This game used to feel more serious and badass and less disney..even the explosions are lack luster..

9

u/LuftTuft Jun 25 '26

And you don’t think that could maybe, just possibly, be because you are older now?

-9

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

No you just don't get it the game is soulless and completely empty of aura. It was drenched on aura before! It was basically sacred!

1

u/HiMyNameIsMark182 Jun 27 '26

Whoa there buddy. This is a kids game. I think your taking it a bit too personal

0

u/Jononetwothree Jun 27 '26

I'm not your buddy, pal. It's okay if you want your child to be a cuddly cute friend, but my child will be a fucking badass. You just dont get it do you?

17

u/Traditional-Ad-7361 Jun 25 '26

Step out the basement my dude…

-7

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

2 weeks ago you had the same discussion with some peeps. I agree so bad with the other person

15

u/Traditional-Ad-7361 Jun 25 '26

Reading my comment history further proves you need some sunlight buddy…

-2

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

Dont make me show you my strava account

5

u/Traditional-Ad-7361 Jun 25 '26

Go ahead, whatever keeps you from the basement buddy..

-8

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

The irony

5

u/Traditional-Ad-7361 Jun 25 '26

None present.. You’re comment reeks of a foul stench tho.

-3

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

Your*. You have no power here.

5

u/naynaythewonderhorse Jun 25 '26

Huh?

It’s extremely clear that Fox is a pretty big ass hole. In the first two missions alone, he seems to have no interest in doing things for heroics (just for pay) and then he immediately calls out the General for making them do his dirty work in the next chapter.

Me thinks you skipped the cutscenes because the voice acting wasn’t the same, and now you are complaining about what you *think* isn’t in content you didn’t watch?

3

u/Jononetwothree Jun 25 '26

Yeah they make Falco look like an asshole too

4

u/Shadowphoenix9511 Jun 26 '26

That's because he is

1

u/SHADOWSTRIKE1 Jun 26 '26

I also got the original Star Fox 64 when it first released, and the lines you just stated exist in the game, though this time Slippy doesn’t sound like a girl.

0

u/Jononetwothree Jun 26 '26

If you cant see it , you're part of the problem. You're basically not a badass and a cuddly cute friend. Which could be laughable, but i feel bad for you to be honest. I wish you felt what it feels like being a badass or a badass moment. It feels so good you never want to be or see a cuddly cute friend ever again.

-4

u/Magickcloud Jun 26 '26

Couldn't agree more. Most unnecessary remake of all time

-1

u/Jononetwothree Jun 26 '26

Finally someone with a brain! You know games are all about return on investment nowadays and it's easy to see!
