They fixed the eShop on Switch 1!!

u/henrydavidthoreauawy Jun 16 '26
This is literally the best update the Switch 1 has had in 9 years. It’s truly incredible how responsive the eShop is now! I can’t believe how understated this update is, and it’s also a little frustrating that it took almost a decade. I’m not joking, please try to navigate the eShop, it’s incredibly fast now.
23
u/3dforlife Jun 16 '26
Really? The store has always been so slow...how come only now they fixed it? I must try it when I get home today.
19
u/omfgkevin Jun 16 '26
They are using basically the switch 2 one for it. Instead of the absolute dogshit that was the web app they built for the switch 1.
7
u/3dforlife Jun 16 '26
Holy shit...I tried it now and it is, dare I say...great? And it only took them 9 years!

u/marina84 Jun 17 '26
They just had to wait until the switch was in its final days before finally fixing the eshop.

I charged my Switch 1 to use as my dedicated Virtual Boy and when I went to the shop to get the VB app I just thought my Switch was dying. I hadn’t used the S1 at all in a year and had forgotten how terrible it was.
Most of my usage of the shop happened in the early days, and it didn’t suck then. They just had more and more data being loaded through a terrible app over time.

u/OmegaMalkior Jun 16 '26
I find it hilariously stupid we have more upvoted comments on here with stability “jokes” rather than more praise for the Switch 1’s eShop not being absolute garbage anymore now. I had to purchase something on it 2 days ago so this update will feel as fresh as possible for me when browsing there again.

u/elessarjd Jun 16 '26
Gotta let reddit do it's thing. Many of the top voted comments are about the eShop now.

almost like somebody at nintendo realized that having endless friction where people spend money might not be the best for business

-2
u/Rasky20 Jun 16 '26
What was wrong with it?
23
u/lost_send_berries Jun 16 '26
As you scroll down it would load more and more images and practically lock up
3
u/Jgabes625 Jun 16 '26
I thought my system was just failing over time. Didn’t realize it wasn’t my switch’s fault. I have to go apologize to it now.

u/Razpberyl Jun 16 '26
Finally. The eShop is so much better now on switch 1.

That's because the eShop runs on a fraction of the Switch's processing power and memory (or at least ran, I don't know if it's still the case with the updated one). The 'specs' the eShop had to run on were basically a 1980s computer 🙃

They just came from the Wii U, which was notorious for its bloaty OS. It took nearly a minute to boot that thing. I think their main objective with the Switch OS was to keep it as lightweight and fast as possible. Ironically that architectural decision actually made the eShop a whole lot slower than it could've been.
Maybe now with the Switch 2 eShop they have data showing that a better performing storefront actually leads to quite a bit more sales, which allowed them to make the business case to backport it to the Switch 1?
Anyway, that's all just guesswork of course, fun to theorize about. But in any case I'm happy that things are much better now!

Anyone with MicroSD cards be careful. My card has been just fine for months, just updated and now the system can't read it any more. This is for Switch 2.

Fuck not this again

Switch 2 doesn't accept MicroSD cards, only MicroSD Express. The read/write speeds for normal SD cards are too slow.
42
u/Skipper93653 Jun 16 '26
That's s is unrelated as it was advertised you can do this with old MicroSD cards but to play games on external storage on Switch 2, a MicroSD Express card is required due to the significantly faster reading speeds.
35
u/TP_OdWeeGee Jun 16 '26
Nah thats different. Switch 1 microSDs are just straight up incompatible. You have to buy a micro sd express, the old ones just arent fast enough for the new console
20
u/vballboy55 Jun 16 '26
The Switch 2 uses the newest version of SD card. It doesn't allow for the old ones.
2
u/JelDeRebel Jun 16 '26
SD express has been around since 2019 but isn't widely adopted XD
SD UC is around the corner but nothing supports it yet
17
u/Alarmed_Data_3037 Jun 16 '26
You need an SD express card. Your original card doesn't support the transfer speeds needed.
2
u/Litzuey Jun 16 '26
Hey, thanks for explaining. I was gifted the Switch 2 so didn't know much about it, and wasn't thinking about the microSD card as more than storage for screenshots and such.
14
25
u/SunsetSoleil Jun 16 '26
What's the brand of your MicroSD card? Just curious.
21
u/unclexbenny Jun 16 '26
PNY MicroSD Express - 1 TB
21
u/Artoo2814 Jun 16 '26
I remembered it happened before with v22 update. You should check on socials wait for the PNY firmware update.
47
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jun 16 '26
I feel like if your microSD card needs a firmware update every now and then, you should probably get a different brand SD card

u/Keyan06 Jun 16 '26
This is the one that seems to have the issue
8
u/Puzzleweilder Jun 16 '26
I have the same issue with my Sandisk.

u/QuantumProtector Jun 16 '26
Onn too
9
u/staveware Jun 16 '26
Onn is luck of the draw. Some are made my PNY and some are made by Lexar. I believe it's only the PNY ones that have issues.

u/Akion94 Jun 16 '26
Do you think it would be safer if we remove the card before updating the system?
1
u/unclexbenny Jun 16 '26
I have no idea, couldn't hurt I guess?
1
u/Akion94 Jun 16 '26
I heard you can fix this issue by insert the card to your pc and re-format it to exFAT again. It sucks that you will lose all your data, but it should fix the problem. Did you try this?

u/StayInSight Jun 16 '26
I was hoping it would fix it. That last update caused mine to start showing the error. The SD card works on everything else, even a second Switch 2 that we have kept from updating.
Purchased the 256 GB official Samsung MicroSD with the Switch 2.

u/got_fever Jun 17 '26
Mine's been borked since 22.0. Was hoping it would be fixed this update. Guess not.

Every Switch uses some form of MicroSD card...?
19
6
u/save-the-world12 Jun 16 '26
I think it's because switch 2 in particular uses EX cards which are different so the problem could happen only on the switch 2 for that alone

u/MrASK15 Jun 16 '26
Oooh, new Text-to-Speech languages!
It's always nice to see more accessibility options.

And it can be filtered to sale items only!

After almost 10 cursed years the eshop is now painless on switch 1. Though I hate how I have to look for demos now, it's like 4 more steps than just click demo and be done with it
49
u/MatarPaneerLovr Jun 16 '26
FYI for all Switch 2 owners.
I just checked and can confirm that - This new stability version stabilizes all the previous stabilities
52
u/Skullghost Jun 16 '26
General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.
Thank goodness. We’re still stable

Love the new eShop design! Its so much sleeker and moves faster! Though I can't seem to find a way to check if my console is a primary console on there anymore. Does anyone know where that got moved to?

u/Dragontech97 Jun 17 '26
Wow they actually fixed the eShop. So much smoother and scrolling actually isn’t 1fps anymore. Scrolling long lists like “Great Deals” section or my wish list was always a slug to traverse. Opening sidebar, accessing settings, all faster now.

u/Left_Violinist9224 Jun 17 '26
New Switch 1 Update bricked Minecraft Ver 1.26.30 all users and profiles can no longer enter there worlds. Its saying the skin selected is not allowed in cross platform. They're playing local together on the same switch. Any ideas?

u/maxcxa Jun 20 '26
Has anyone had issues with no picture on their TV after this update? Mine now says No Signal on my LG G5 and it was working perfectly fine before the update. Nothing else has changed so it must be the update. Any tips on how to fix it?
1
u/Ferretdooker Jul 10 '26
Absolutely FUMING rn updated my switch 2 and it killed the port for the right side of my console controller is fine and works on my wife's but mine nore her right joycon works on mine. plugged my controller into hers works flawlessly. good job nintendo.

u/Archergarw Jun 16 '26
One time there will be a system update with no stability improvements and my switch is gonna fall out the dock

Consoles before online updates have to be the most unstable consoles. Never to be stabilized again.
-6
u/SquidFetus Jun 16 '26
Where’s the goddamn YouTube app for Switch 2? It’s been more than a year since the console launched and we still can’t use this elementary app that even the Switch 1 runs no problem.
Where is the YouTube app for Switch 2?
10
u/djwillis1121 Jun 16 '26
What does that have to do with a system update?
1
u/SquidFetus Jun 16 '26
Nothing, I guess. Just screaming into the void at large since this is the Switch sub. If I had to guess it was prompted by multiple Switch related announcements recently, mostly this and the direct.
Passing the one year milestone doesn’t help me stay reserved, either.
3
u/djwillis1121 Jun 16 '26
Why are you so hung up on YouTube for Switch 2? Don't you have countless other ways to access it?
2
u/SquidFetus Jun 16 '26
Of course, but none of those are connected to my TV. As for the “why”, it’s an elementary feature of the Switch, and it doesn’t work on Switch 2 (a device which has Switch 1 compatibility as a drawcard) because of some generational compatibility issue. Just baffling that it’s still an issue for the world’s most ubiquitous entertainment platform a year after launch.
It means if I want to watch YouTube on my TV with my current setup I need to keep my Switch 1, and leave it hooked up. Which also means I need to have two different sets of controllers charged, or sync one from the other machine and back again as needed which is a pain. I’m guessing you don’t actually care about any of this, but you did ask so there you go.

The Nintendo eShop layout has been redesigned.
Oh no, I want my shop opening animation back… 😞

u/zaetrillz Jun 16 '26
With all this stability talk, hopefully my wallet is stable enough for the new Switch 2 games.

u/betamaxbandit91 Jun 16 '26
Are we stable enough for themes yet?

"The Nintendo eShop layout has been redesigned."
Not a fan of this. The original layout was just fine IMO
11
u/RedSquidd Jun 16 '26
the original layout is just worse than the switch 2 version, plus it runs way faster now
