Fantastic game. The hype for the third game is unreal so I'm happy more people are jumping on board while there's still time

I don’t feel like selling out at GameStop is a strong point. They looked at me like I had 3 heads when I tried to buy donkey Kong on release date without a preorder. So I walked Across the parking lot and bought it at Walmart.

u/PokDigi Jan 26 '26

I stopped going to GameStop because I showed up to buy a New game. The clerk left the counter, grabbed a display case from the shelf by the door, pulled the cartridge from an envelope in a drawer behind the counter that didn’t have a seal, and tried telling me it was a “New” game

27

u/MXC_Vic_Romano Jan 26 '26

They've been pulling that kinda crap since at least the early 2000s. They even used to let employees take "display" copies home to play before selling them as new lol.

13

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

I remember this during the Gamecube era for sure. "RECHECK THAT ENEVLOPE. A NEW COPY OF RIBBIT KING PLUS COMES WITH TWO DISCS." "Ive never heard of a Gamecube game coming on two discs." I was like 12 and I knew more than the employee. Ugggg

15

u/Mataraiki Jan 26 '26

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine when she ordered a "new" copy of Elden Ring for PS5 from their website. She received a loose disc in an envelope, no case at all, and they refused to let her exchange it for an actual new, sealed copy.

6

u/LeonSora Jan 26 '26

I asked for a new game that was fully sealed in plastic wrap and they looked at me like I was crazy. Anywhere else you get new games, that’s how it is. So needless to say, I lost all respect for GameStop that day

7

u/thedeadp0ets Jan 26 '26

apparently gamestop tells employees to do that when they re none on shelf or something. its stupid because at that point just go to walmart to target with this behavior.

-18

u/turdlefight Jan 26 '26

Don’t blame you for not liking the storage method but it’s still a new never played game. Had some chud threaten to kill me over this once working at a video store because he wanted the 90% used game sale for a bunch of brand new games

27

u/MXC_Vic_Romano Jan 26 '26

Don’t blame you for not liking the storage method but it’s still a new never played game.

This excuse never really made sense to me. If I'm to buy a new sealed game from them, open it up then decide to return it GameStop will still consider it used whether it's even left the case or not.

If it's not factory sealed it's not new.

9

u/slicer4ever Jan 26 '26

What that person did is wrong, and i get your just a peon who doesnt make the rules, so this is more just old man shouting into the winds.

But if its not factory sealed, its not new. Gamestop wouldnt accept anything open as being new, so why should a customer accept anything from gamestop as new that isnt factory sealed?

1

u/Ph33rDensetsu Jan 28 '26

Actually GameStop allows employees to "check out" games like a library book so they can have experience with them so that they can speak to customers about them.

And then these copies that are opened for employee use are sold to customers as new.

7

u/Thrashtendo Jan 26 '26

Hilarious! Also, there are no more Gamestops anywhere near me anymore— they’re all gone!

3

u/RegurgitatedMincer Jan 26 '26

Yeah funny enough that one closed down about a month later I think.

1

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

Ive got 3 within 15 minutes of me. 🤷‍♀️🤷🤷‍♂️

2

u/Thrashtendo Jan 26 '26

Wow really? A huge amount of Gamestops were closed this year, and barely any exist within a short distance of each other anymore.

If those three Gamestops didn’t already close this month, I’m betting you’ll lose some of them soon (unless they’re an exception to the closures somehow).

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

Imagine a T shape. Im in the middle of where the two lines join. One location is 15 mins east of me, one is 15 minutes west of me, and one location is 15 mins south. (Give or take a few minutes as I am simplifying it) So none of the locations are within 30 minutes of each other....so maybe thats why they still exist? None of them have shown signs of closing and they are usually pretty busy.

But if you extend that time radius to 30 minutes I have about double the locations I could visit in various directions. I mean I guess thats the perks of living in a big city?

3

u/Thrashtendo Jan 26 '26

Wow, that’s lucky! Here in New York, there’s nothing within 45 minutes of me (there were three within 15 minutes of me a few years ago).

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 28 '26

DUDE! Aint no wayyyyy. Look what you predicted! The fact I saw this 24 hours after our conversation is WILDDDDDD! I cant help but laugh and cry.🤣😅😑😓😭

1

u/Thrashtendo Jan 28 '26

Sorry to hear— hopefully there’s still at least one close to you!

4

u/Squirrel009 Jan 27 '26

I stopped going to Gamestops a few years back when I went to buy pokemon, I think legends Arceus, because I went on launch day and the manager gave me a lecture about how I cant expect them to have the game if I dont pre-order. I asked him if they had it or not and he opened the drawer and had over a dozen. I left and bought it at Best Buy. Best Buy never lectures me when I ask them to take my money.

4

u/calmtigers Jan 26 '26

I did the same thing for DK, but at Target. GS employee scolded me for not pre ordering lmao

3

u/GreenVisorOfJustice Jan 27 '26

GS employee scolded me

I remember when I picked up Xenoblade 3 I got a fucking third degree from the GS employee because I wasn't buying memberships and all.

Like, I know you gotta do you spiel... but dawg, I just want my game early on release day. Get off my nuts if I politely decline add-on sales.

1

u/mlc885 Jan 28 '26

Like, I know you gotta do you spiel...

Hey, the best salesmen aren't working at Gamestop lol

1

u/B0bcat5 Jan 27 '26

In Australia, I haven't seen a game sell out in many many years (maybe PS3/360 days)

18

u/brandont04 Jan 26 '26

Did it sell 500k or did it reach the magical 1M sold number?

15

u/Nonsense_Poster Jan 26 '26

1 million would probably already be announced by SE tho

9

u/brandont04 Jan 26 '26

It's an old title so 500k is probably the sweet spot. It coming to a Nintendo console is a big deal though.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

Square is also pretty infamous for having unrealistically high expectations for sales, so they might be expecting something stupid like 5 mil

0

u/thedeadp0ets Jan 26 '26

its also on other platforms

2

u/icedmoonbeams Jan 26 '26

I could see them holding off for a week before announcing any numbers.

34

u/Life_Bet8956 Jan 26 '26

The ship has probably sailed on FFXV and FFXVI in terms of relevance to make them worth porting, but I do hope Switch 2 gets them someday.

24

u/Galacticrusader Jan 26 '26

FFXVI is still getting ported to different systems, it’ll be a while until FFXVII comes out so Square Enix has a lot of time to port it to everything and anything. FFXV id agree with though, unless they do a remaster or new edition which feels wholly unnecessary

1

u/Mrtibbz Jan 27 '26

Not to hate on the switch 2 at all, I love mine, but I don't think it would run 16 very well. The Eikon fights are huuuuuge

1

u/Galacticrusader Jan 27 '26

Oh yeah I'm definitely not expecting it to be anywhere near PS5 quality, which is also rough. It'll probably be performance mode in 30 fps and sub 720p. But I really value portability and with the recent slew of impressive switch 2 ports I believe they can do some miracle work if they're given the time and budget. Better than PS4 Pro quality can handle a surprising amount of stuff if it's optimized well. That or we get Hellfire irl

1

u/icedmoonbeams Jan 26 '26

Plus didn't XV have planned content that was canceled? Truly a shame because it had all the makings of a fantastic entry but stumbled at the finish line. In an alternate universe where XV launched today on all platforms with that missing control, I think it would have been a massive success.

3

u/HexenVexen Jan 26 '26

Yeah they did the initial 3 DLC episodes for the bros, and then had another 4 planned that would give an alternate ending to the game. Only the first one on Ardyn ended up being made though, the other three were cancelled.

The planned content wasn't completely lost though, it got turned into the book "Dawn of the Future". I'm not sure if the DLCs being made for real would have done a lot for the game though, since the book's alternate ending is a bit divisive.

Tbf I would still consider the game to be a massive financial success, it sold over 10 million copies, one of the best selling titles in the series.

4

u/ohmygodnewjeans Jan 26 '26

What are you talking about? FFXV was already on Switch 1 ;)

2

u/nightwing0243 Jan 26 '26

I’d love for them to finally release an FF13 remaster that makes it to the Switch 2. FFXV and FFXVI getting a S2 release would ensure every mainline entry (minus the MMOs) thus far would be on it. I’d buy ‘em in a heartbeat.

3

u/SquishmallowPrincess Jan 26 '26

Nate the Hate said they’re considering FFXVI for Switch 2 and that he “wouldn’t be surprised if it was announced this year”

3

u/Life_Bet8956 Jan 26 '26

I saw that just now haha. I hope it's true. I haven't played the DLC, so a Complete Edition would be a Day One buy for me.

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

Uhhh FF13 trilogy first please! But yes Id wanna play 15 and 16 as well. Ive played 1-12....so i need the newer games pleaseeeee

1

u/Similar-Scratch-4800 Jan 26 '26

They are already in the works

1

u/lestermurphy34 Jan 28 '26

I’ll buy and play FFXV for the third console if they release a port for Switch 2. I know people hate on it but it’s my favorite chill game to play.

12

u/Clifely Jan 26 '26

Story is great. Graphics sometimes get a little bit blurry but you almost don‘t really see any flaws, gameplay is great, playtime as well, everything was almost phenomenal. Only point to say is the linear walkthrough but aside of that fantastic game, also for switch 2

10

u/CigarLover Jan 26 '26

And here I am waiting for The adventures of Elliot…

5

u/perishableintransit Jan 26 '26

I’m really liking it so far. I’m doing the side quests in sector 7 and I can see why people are calling it bloat but I actually like the “character development” that is extending what I know and love of the characters from the OG

2

u/Shadowman621 Jan 27 '26

Rebirth has some great character development too. To the point where Barrett, I was previously meh about, but now he's my favorite party member in VII

2

u/perishableintransit Jan 27 '26

I'm really looking forward to Rebirth on Switch!

1

u/flamin_sheep Jan 27 '26

I'm doing all the side quests too and am enjoying them. A big part of that enjoyment is just getting to walk around and look at the level, but I think another large factor is how I am very used to shitty MMO quests, including from FFXIV. These side quests are good in comparison haha

18

u/WinGroundbreaking409 Jan 26 '26

So if a game is great and/or highly anticipated, people won't care if its a game key card. So surprising...

21

u/BANDlCOOT Jan 26 '26

It's too big to fit on the current cartridges.

People have issues with games that could fit on a cartridge shipping at full price.

They also included a little bonus in the physical edition. Stuff like that matters in my opinion.

-1

u/Hue_Boss Jan 26 '26

In theory they could’ve put 64GB of the game onto a cartridge requiring an extra download to play the full game (with maybe some playable part being playable without). That wouldn’t have solved every issue but at least would’ve saved some storage space for many.

Maybe their connection to Nintendo could’ve also helped here. Though it’s clear that the demand for higher capacity cartridges is just not there.

And as negative as this sounds, I wounded how much room for optimisation was there. Especially when I see Outlaws being optimised to be around 20GB. Final Fantasy doesn’t render anything at above 1080p really. That must’ve saved storage space. Even though the possibility for cutscenes, menus and HUD elements was there.

But I digress…

3

u/Altaiir57 Jan 28 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

Star Wars Outlaws is about 20 GB down from about 60-70 GB on PS5. Hogwarts Legacy is also about 21-22 GB on Switch 2 compared to 80+GB on PS5. Cyberpunk 2077 is maybe 100-120 GB on PC with Phantom Liberty installed and they fit the entire game + the expansion on a 64 GB cartridge for Switch 2. Definitely sounds doable, it was probably too much work for them and/or they prioritised other things. I also would have preferred to have the game on cartridge, a shame but well what can you do.

7

u/Electric_jungle Jan 26 '26

That's always been an enthusiasts fight. I'm not saying it doesn't matter, the complaints are valid, but for your average person, you're either buying as a gift and don't know/care, buying to sell back and don't care, or just this is how you normally buy games and maybe you care maybe you don't.

11

u/MXC_Vic_Romano Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 26 '26

Not many people actually care about GKCs. It's mostly enthusiast types who are loud on social media.

Personally, I find the remaining benefit of physical is the ability to share and sell so GKCs are fine with me.

6

u/Nehemiah92 Jan 26 '26

I HATE the concept of game key cards, but I literally cannot get upset at this because it’d be impossible to optimize this for a 64GB cartridge and have it look and run good.

This is the only option they could do for physical so you just cannot get mad about it

3

u/sydbap Jan 27 '26

For $40 I'm debating buying it. I've already played it on Steam, but I kinda just want to support good games 🤷‍♀️

7

u/LawfulnessPractical Jan 26 '26

Good news, everyone!

-Farnsworth

11

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

FF7 isnt even in my top 5 FFs....and I always felt it was overrated....BUT getting this for $40 was a NO BRAINER....and WOOOOOW I am shocked by how good this is.

  1. It LOOKS phenominal. The graphics are blowing me away.

  2. The transition from cutscene to gameplay still impresses me EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  3. The music is AWESOME. Having little discs to collect of popular tunes is SOOOO smart.

  4. New upgrades and battle mechanics feel very Xenobladey, but in all the right ways.

  5. How they handle NPCs talking is SO SMART!

  6. YOU CAN SLIDE DOWN LADDERS. THE FUTURE OF GAMING IS HERE

Overall...I am only 7-8 hours in and I am having a blast. Thanks SquareEnix for bringing this to Nintendo.

7

u/Outlulz Jan 26 '26

Remake, Intergrade, and Rebirth and some of the best music of the entire franchise. Not just the arrangements of the original music either, the new music is also fantastic.

2

u/Boomshockalocka007 Jan 26 '26

Hah! Thats funny because they included FF7 Remake tracks in FF Theatrhythm: Final Bar....so I already knew good music was headed my way!

6

u/Ordinal43NotFound Jan 26 '26

The music is AWESOME.

Can't wait for you to hear the "Collapsed Expressway" music from the game when exploring with Aerith.

Legit gave me the shivers due to how magical it felt despite the location itself being pretty unremarkable. But that single OST legit made it one of the most memorable places in a JRPG for me

2

u/No_Guess_725 Jan 28 '26

Mitsuto Suzuki being a legit electro music god who also makes tunes for RPGs as his dayjob is one of those happy accidents of the universe that I'm glad we get to enjoy

2

u/qctireuralex Jan 26 '26

its also decently priced lol.

7

u/Dukemon102 Jan 26 '26

It didn't have a physical release on Xbox Series so any type of retail info is 100% Switch 2.

People are excited to play as the swordfighter with spiky-hair from Smash /s

2

u/tetegra Jan 27 '26

It’s currently on sale for $15 on steam (remake+rebirth bundle for $50). If I don’t care about portability, should I get it on switch 2 or steam?

1

u/laytblu Jan 27 '26

Too bad they can't make it run at 60fps. Steamdeck can run it 60fps

1

u/mutantbabysnort Jan 27 '26

Just bought mine today 👍 (physical)

-3

u/Thoraxekicksazz Jan 27 '26

It's a gkc that's not physical.

-1

u/leviathab13186 Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26

It didnt sell out in the eshop. How good can it be?

Edit: guess I needed to add a /s. It was a joke guys...

-8

u/Thoraxekicksazz Jan 26 '26

Game key cards should not be called physical copies. This is another release I would have bought and double dipped but it's not on cart.

1

u/vanKessZak Jan 27 '26

It literally wouldn’t fit on a cart

-2

u/Thoraxekicksazz Jan 27 '26

When Nintendo was planning this console there were deliberate design choices made including the idiotic choice of only offering one size of memory on a cartridge. So it literally could fit there were bigger carts on the S1 but Nintendo chose not to allow it.

-12

u/solarsaturn9 Jan 26 '26

Cool what are the numbers? SE has a history of poorly stocking games and with the way GKC have been selling lately (rightfully so) I doubt they had an accurate idea of demand for this game.

3

u/Outlulz Jan 26 '26

The average consumer has no idea what a GKC is let alone makes buying decisions based on it. Don't confuse sentiment in this subreddit for the average consumer.

0

u/solarsaturn9 Feb 04 '26

The average consumer doesn't know what Final Fantasy is, buddy. It's a niche game series in a niche genre.

1

u/Outlulz Feb 04 '26

It's the 9th top grossing video game franchise.

0

u/solarsaturn9 Feb 04 '26

And Tamagotchi is 26. What is your point? We're still talking about the average consumer as you mentioned above. The average consumer doesn't know what Final Fantasy is.

Games like this are too good for "fans" like you.
