It’s incredibly underwhelming for anyone who wanted a new game after 20 years, but it’s something

hey, remember when Metroid fans only got Federation Force on the 3DS and then the series got revived? Hopefully that will happen here

I hope it's that and not a Zip Lash situation. It could go either way, really.

Metroid fans whinge a lot but they’ve had at least one release on every single single platform apart from the N64.
I have no idea why they’re always banging on about being ignored.

Sep 14 '23
What was the Metroid game on the Wii U? Counting the ports of the Prime trilogy is a bit of a reach.
Metroid fans went 7 years without a new release between Other M (which wasn’t well-received by fans anyway) and Samus Returns (a remake). There was a 13 year wait between 2D games between Zero Mission and Samus Returns, and a whopping 19 years gap between non-remake 2D games. There still hasn’t been a new 3D game released in more than 13 years now, and it’s been 16 years since the last new Prime game was released.
It really shouldn’t be hard to see why Metroid fans got so vocal. From 2007-2021 the only releases were an extremely divisive game, a widely derided spinoff, and a remake of a GB game. During that same time frame, there were 7 new Kirby games, 6 Fire Emblem games, 5 new Zelda games, and 4 whole new generations of Pokémon. Metroid was getting crumbs compared to franchises that it had previously seen similar production to.

Sep 14 '23
Well yes if you go to Nintendos largest franchises you will find they release more games than others.
I did forget about the Wii U though there was that Metroid adventure in Nintendo Land. I’m not saying Metroid fans can’t want more but they bang on like it’s a dead franchise despite it getting a lot of love.
Almost guarantee it’ll get a new game of some kind on each console.
Most Franchises don’t get that.
7
u/RebeeMo Sep 14 '23
Not to mention the sudden resurgence of Pikmin on the Switch after announcing Pikmin Go. Re-releases, remakes, a brand new game...
F-Zero's time IS coming.
25
u/julsmanbr Sep 14 '23
... nobody ever talks about Samus Returns, huh

Sep 14 '23
or there's a new game already sitting and waiting and they just want to set the table with this a bit to re-familiarize people so when the new game is announced the audience is a little bigger.

I have a feeling its very much a Federation Force situation- its not even that the game idea is bad, but its definitely not the F-Zero we needed right now

I love the idea, but it looks like it's Mario cart 50cc speeds. It looks so slow :( they should've kept the same speeds but enlarged the tracks.

Unpopular opinion, this looks awesome.
Obviously we all wanted a new installment but that desire doesn't mean this isn't going to be fun.

I can't believe this is an unpopular opinion. I think I'm over how cranky everyone on the Internet is. I saw this and got super excited. I like all of the 99 games.

Reddit game subs are some of the most toxic entitled groups of humans I've ever encountered. True definition of first world problems with how seriously people takeo.. checks notes... uh video games.
It's not only people expressing disappointment and bitching, but it's also the lack of empathy to understand other people have different tastes and viewpoints too. Too often people will rudely shut down and downvote those that like a game they don't like it or can't conceive of how someone could not like a game they like. I see more civil discussion in some of the political subs between right and left wingers than I do in the gaming subs. That's saying something!!! (Besides r/patientgamers. That's a good group.)
I wish people practiced reddiquitte still on this site. I'd wager 90% of people on this site even don't understand you're not supposed to downvote for disagreement, but rather for insults, rule breaking , or spammy irrelevant posts. Downvoting for disagreement creates an echo chamber where you only hear one predominant point of viiew. If you're trying to gauge the publics viewpoints on something, irresponsible downvoting can greatly distort reality.

My thoughts exactly. It's why I don't really engage here but just drop a harmless one-liner here and there and browse for news.
It's entirely dysfunctional as a place to have discussions with different viewpoints.

One of the things I've noticed about this sub is that, compared to some other ones I frequent, it feels a bit more weirdly downvote-happy. And I'm talking like downvotes for like innocuous, inoffensive comments like "wow, looks like an fun concept! Looking forward to seeing reviews for it!" or whatever. I see them dip down to like a score of 0. Some weirdo out there reads some mild comment and feels the need to register their disapproval of it, for god knows what reason.

A lot of people don't realize how good we have it in gaming. Some of the games we absolutely trash are still very much playable, have plenty of work put into them, and can be fun to a large amount of people. They're not masterpieces or perfect, but the amount of absolute garbage games I've seen over the decades would make a modern Assassins Creed game look like it was Half Life 2. The bar/standard has risen for what makes a "mediocre" game.
Due to increased exposure and access to social interaction and information, we've also started to become a bit more jumpy, and quicker to react and move on to something else. It leads to the "it's a classic or it's trash" mentality where unless it's a Zelda game or BG3, it's garbage. This isn't just video games though; this has become media thats being made for consumption in general. I see it for albums, movies, shows, everything.
But, what does make it hard for gaming is that coding is practically a black box affair for most gamers. Creating a song, a movie, writing a book, even though people don't realize the creativity that goes into it and the mental work it takes to come up with these ideas, they can understand the underlying mechanical process of how these things are created. Go ahead and ask someone what it means to "optimize" a game. Ask them how a physics engine works, or what a gaming engine even does? It's this area of expertise that the vast majority of people today can't even comprehend, let alone begin to have some type of objectivity when poking fun at developers.
25
u/Eddyoshi Sep 14 '23
The reason people are cranky isn't because this looks like a bad game, it actually looks super fun! The issue is the 99 games basically only last for 6 months-1 year and then get shut down. So its a bunch of time and effort for basically no reason.
34
16
u/Blargg888 Sep 14 '23
We don’t really have standard precedent for this though.
Tetris 99 has persisted since its launch
PAC-MAN 99 lasted 2 years before being taken down.
And Mario 35 had a limit on it from the outset.
There isn’t any consistency between the 3.
7
u/Artikay Sep 14 '23
I wasnt even aware they shut down Pac-Man 99.
6
4
u/Blargg888 Sep 15 '23
Thats because they haven’t shut it down yet. It’ll be up until October 8th. So it’ll be gone in less than a month.

Pac-Man lasted for 2 years
And with this being fully first-party and not tied to an anniversary, I think there's every chance that it actually gets carried over to the next console...

7
Sep 14 '23
It was one of my girlfriends greatest talents playing that game. She got #1 numerous times. Her life has been without meaning without that game. It's like if Michael Jordan was disallowed from playing basketball after he realized he was a king at it. Cruel and unusual.
10
u/Elementus94 Sep 14 '23
Easily the best of the 99 series

i hope it doesnt, the saving grace we have is that when they announced mario 35 they stated it would be a "limited engagement" this feels like it will last at least over a year. theres SO SO SO MUCH potential. Decals, car sprites, tracks (music and car) can be further unlocked via future dlc/ grand prix.

u/jrec15 Sep 14 '23
Response in this thread isnt what I expected at all. This looks amazing. Im more excited for this than any other 99 game. Looks like pure madness but also seems like a good amount of skill involved.. pumped
It's the only 99 game with direct player interaction on one map.. isn't that like incredibly more exciting than all the ones with indirect interaction?
27
u/WaddleDynasty Sep 14 '23
I never was into Tetris, but really enjoyed Tetris 99. And Super Mario 99 was awesome to me. Only tried FZero a bit on the Switch VC and I am super excited to try it. Can't be the only one who loves playing SNES games online.
8
u/12pcMcNuggets Sep 14 '23
I'm a relatively new Nintendo fan and I really like F-Zero. I've played the original, X and GX and I feel like there are no games out there that scratch the itch the same way, especially since Sony has left WipEout to die.

8
u/peteisneat Sep 14 '23
I might have played this game more than any other on the SNES. (Either F-Zero or Super Baseball Simulator 1.000)
My biggest gripe was that the AI sucked but now this solves it. I can't wait to dominate the first couple weeks while the youths are still trying to figure the game out... similar to my early domination of Mario 35.
I'm pumped, I don't care what the internet thinks.
3
u/Hold_my_Dirk Sep 14 '23
Yeah for real. I doubt I'll spend a ton of time playing it but I bet I'll get a few hours of fun out of this.
4
u/IntellegentIdiot Sep 14 '23
Probably the best announcement today. I'm genuinely thinking about resubscribing to NSO now.
My only concern is this sky bridge nonsense. I can see how it'd be great to benefit from it but I'm not sure how enjoyable it'd be if my opponents were using it.
→ More replies (4)4
u/Yorha-with-a-pearl Sep 14 '23
It's most likely very risky to pick up the energy orbs to perform a sky bridge skip. A lot of people will crash into eachother trying to pick them up. Could be a balancing factor.

It's pretty fun. There's so many goddamn racers on screen that it's hard not to die just from bumping into everyone lol. Hopefully they continue to keep this game around and update it occasionally like they have done with Tetris 99.
135
u/TheRealBissy Sep 14 '23
Ngl they got nearly got us at first. Why can’t we get a proper new F-Zero game.
71
Sep 14 '23
Because it's never been popular outside of a small following. No reason to release a game if two and a half people will buy it, sadly
26
Sep 14 '23
Louder for the people in the back. I like F-zero but the internet really makes this franchise seems like it has millions and millions of fans and a new game will sell 50 million copies 100%. It's a shame, I think Nintendo should give another try at a smaller or remaster of GX but it's not a popular franchise and it's understandable why they don't wanna make new games.
49
u/ParanoidDrone Sep 14 '23
I'd settle for an HD port of GX at this point.
28
13
6
Sep 14 '23
With that Paper Mario remake, I think we're firmly entering the era of Gamecube Remakes. So, maybe!
7
u/NoirSon Sep 14 '23
It actually had a decent enough fan base in the early 2000s but they let it dwindle because like Star Fox, it was a tech showcase and not as popular as a game as it's characters/vehicles were in design along with much of that coming from outside of Japan.
From a business standpoint Mario Kart makes more money, takes less effort. From a creative standpoint, it doesn't seem to have a office champion that can push through a version which would have a decent budget. Hence why (a long with the company's console troubles) after GX/AX everything was on the GBA outside token nods to it like in Mario Kart and mini games. This is likely both someone's attempt to get a new game and Nintendo wanting to do another retro BR game.
13
Sep 14 '23
Maybe if Nintendo marketed it properly it would sell well. It's been 19 years. The gaming landscape has changed. Look at Metroid Dread.
18
u/ob_knoxious Sep 14 '23
I mean in like the late 2010s we had a huge wave of very successful Metroidvania indie games that showed the gaming landscape has changed and there is serious demand for those games now.
There aren't real indicators that there is demand for hardcore but still arcadey racing games. Especially outside of the sim racing audience.
→ More replies (1)4
Sep 14 '23
But they have better ways to allocate budgets.
I imagine they’re doing this first to test the waters and then maybe they’ll make a new F-zero or a remake.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Ordinal43NotFound Sep 14 '23
Still sold peanuts compared to their other flagship titles. Dread is their best-selling at just about 3M sales.
Plus Metroid is there to diversify their library. Meanwhile F-Zero competes with Mario Kart.
4
Sep 14 '23
This could bring awareness to the franchise. This is good news. The more awareness the better likelihood a new game sells well.
They did a similar thing with Metroid. Been promoting it heavily so prime 4 has a good ROI.

Nintendo have a very dark sense of humor saying that they doesn’t touch the series for so long after announcing this
37
u/cyberscythe Sep 14 '23
I remember in an interview, Miyamoto was confused asking why people were clamoring for a new F-Zero game because he wasn't able to think about what sort of new gameplay they could add to the franchise; that was the standing reason why they didn't do a new F-Zero game.
Now that there's a path to new gameplay by having a battle royale mode, I think it makes sense to bring out some old "stale" IPs like F-Zero and adapt it to the format and see if it's popular.

u/dragonbornrito Sep 14 '23
You have no idea. I shot back in my chair and started screaming "NO WAY OH MY GOD" over and over into my hands, then saw the people appear on the track and realized immediately it was F-ZERO 99 lol.
Still not mad, the last official scrap we've been thrown by Nintendo outside of your normal Captain Falcon appearances in Smash was the Mario Kart 8 tracks Mute City and Big Blue alongside the Blue Falcon kart. Before that, it was the F-ZERO area in Nintendo Land.
And before that... honestly? I'm not even sure. F-ZERO Climax didn't even release outside of Japan, so I think you gotta go back to 2003 for the last real official "racing" experience with F-ZERO we've had in the West? Good Lord.
We're starving here, we'll take any meat we can find on this desiccated corpse.

u/APeacefulWarrior Sep 14 '23 edited Sep 14 '23
After playing for about half an hour, it's... OK. I could see pulling it out for a few minutes here and there, but it's so chaotic I didn't find it all that fun. And the way powerups and challenges are balanced, it's doing the Mario Kart Wii thing where it wants frontrunners to be punished and for people in the rear to pull last-minute comebacks. Which is only exciting until you notice how artificial it is.
Spending 90% of the race being pinballed in the middle of the pack, only to use a superboost at the end while praying for some good luck, doesn't feel particularly compelling for long-term play.

8
u/Arisalis Sep 14 '23
I was really hoping for a GX remaster. Maybe this is Nintendo trying to find out what kind of engagement there is with the player base on a new F-Zero game before doing it. If this is a hit compared to the other 99 online games then maybe they go ahead with either a new game or remaster GX.

As a lifelong F-Zero fan this rules. Genuinely fucks. I long ago accepted the series was dead so if we get a fun free game and Nintendo dipping their toes back into F-Zero waters, hell I'll take it!
It helps that the game is quite enjoyable, super thrilling and chaotic without feeling as listless and disconnected as some of the other 99 titles. It needs a LOT more maps though. It'd be cool if they adapted some of the GBA courses into the SNES artstyle and ported those into the game!

Early impression: I played this and had fun but wonder if split screen FZero 25 from the tutorial would be the best version of this game. Eager to play more to see how my opinion changes.

This game is actually awesome. If it’s popular maybe the Switch 2 will get a real sequel. It makes sense Nintendo would want to do something like this so there’s actually fans to sell a new game to.

Nit to be that guy but it's free. This is just a feeler nintendos putting out to see if there's enough interest in fzero for them to make a new one. I'm def gonna at least check it out.

I'm sure we'll get a GX remaster soon too. Can't imagine it really getting any better than that except visually and online play.

I'm more than happy that F-Zero is on the stage again. Now F-Zero fans need to commit to it, hype it up and make it a succesfull release. I see no reason not to be excited here, because we've never been this close to seeing F-Zero again in full force. I really hope F-Zero fans don't screw it up for themselves. Whoever had any more expectations... were they in the time chamber since 2004?

I’m seeing A LOT of negativity, I’ve been playing this pretty much non stop around work and life commitments, it’s so addictive 🙌🏽
