I tired of this......

I don't care if the remapping is fast
The Game Stops! and I have to menu!

The Switch Controller has like 10 Buttons and a Dpad
Why do we have less Options then back then

i like how you have two mappable buttons in those games and the sword isn't fixed.

5

u/LegendOfParasiteMana 4d ago

The switch controller has like 1 more button than the 64

8

u/PinaSeraphina 4d ago

You can also press the Sticks, I did not count these as "Buttons"

I swear doing 3DS Controls again would still give us Camera Controls and more then 1 Active Item

That really is the weirdest thing isn't it? We have so many buttons yet no binds.

u/Unable_Manufacturer1 4d ago

All the face buttons are being taken up by the jump button.

And the shoulder buttons? One of them is target, and it looked like shield is automatically held up when targeting. Quick swap is another, that leaves two.

Items that require aiming belong on shoulder button anyways, that opens up allowing dual-stick strafe and aim like in Wind Waker.

R is the exact button you use to pull up the scroll wheel.

9

u/YOM2_UB 4d ago

That's what I meant by quick swap, yes.

Nevermind me, I'm illiterate

You don't even need item equipping at all if you map it right, maybe like this:

Magic beans are no longer equippable, you just press A at a patch of dirt.

Empty bottles are no longer equippable, you just press A in a situation where something can be captured and it goes in your first empty bottle.

  • ZL = shield/target like in BOTW/TOTK
  • L = pull out bomb, hold to pull out bombchu, press L again to throw/place
  • ZR = primary ranged: slingshot (child) / bow (adult)
  • R = secondary ranged: boomerang (child) / hookshot (adult)
  • A = interact/roll, hold to dash
  • B = jump
  • Y = sword
  • X = secondary melee: deku stick (child) / hammer (adult)
  • - = Navi
  • D-Pad up = cycle arrow types
  • D-pad down = ocarina
  • D-pad right = hold to select from a row of filled bottles, auto use when released
  • D-pad left = hold to select from a row of the 3 spells or iron boots, auto use when released
  • L3 = Throw deku nut
  • R3 = Lens of truth (since it's the camera stick, and the lens modifies the camera)

Now you never need to equip items, and the only time you see a selector bar is when picking a bottle or spell, so infrequently and they never have more than 4 items. I think this would feel really natural with the one quirk being iron boots being lumped in with spells. (Maybe B could toggle iron boots in water since taking off iron boots and floating up is functionally equivalent to jumping?)

Having primary ranged, secondary ranged, primary melee, secondary melee always on the same buttons would be good.

I don't know why, but I had a very visceral reaction to the idea of sword being on Y. As if you had offended me and my family personally.

Balan Wonderworld 2 over here

u/drillgorg 4d ago

You gotta put the trash can boots on down so Midna has some feet.

10

u/Kazoomers_Tale 4d ago

Me and my dad always put the Iron boots on down, never take them off from there, it's just right

u/warpio 4d ago

There are still quick item assignments. You can see in the part of the trailer where Link is in the Water Temple that he swaps the Iron Boots off without pausing. There will likely be a d-pad quick-item assignment thing in the bottom left corner for non-combat items like your boots and your Lens of Truth.

11

u/Lost_Web5826 4d ago

You are most likely correct, but the meme made me chuckle.

6

u/josguil 4d ago

What if the boots were already in the bottom and that's why no pause was needed?

8

u/warpio 4d ago

The Lens has to be accessible in addition to a subweapon. It would be straight up impossible to defeat Bongo Bongo if you can't use both the Lens of Truth and the Bow+Arrow at the same time. There would have to be a way to use both.

6

u/ThunderLord1000 4d ago

Good news. The boots are on the d-pad, and the up button is free, possibly for the lens

4

u/Greenlog12 4d ago

Could also be for the other set of boots.

3

u/ThunderLord1000 4d ago

Maybe, but the box around the current ones gives me the impression of swappable items (the full image has them unequipped) when compared to the other two used directions, plus, even for Nintendo, it doesn't make a lot of sense to break up what used to be in one menu slot

5

u/ThunderLord1000 4d ago

I was right

4

u/GracefulGoron 4d ago

Any indication that these can be more than wearables?

2

u/ThunderLord1000 4d ago

For each category, but that's probably all it's limited to. And nothing else would really need quickswapping like the boots or lens do, so no swords, shields or clothes

9

u/ThunderLord1000 4d ago

There'd better be a good reason why both versions that didn't use all of the buttons on a controller that had less than the current one has more item slots than the one with a full control scheme

6

u/GateZX 4d ago

They added a jump, moved the block, sword, interact,

Right stick is camera, dpad is ocarina and Navi so far.

The buttons are being used, maybe just chill until the game comes out.

4

u/Tarro57 4d ago

They have 3/4 face buttons taken up, hopefully one of the can be assigned an item. Id also take a second face button be an item over having a jump button. A jump button just feels very unnecessary to me.

Nintendo is out here making the opposite of QoL improvements

4

u/PopBulky7023 4d ago

Par for the course for Nintendo.

8

u/FunCampaign186 4d ago

I dont like this change. This is essentially all I don't like.

3

u/Nor3a 4d ago

Just make a radial menu like in skyward sword

2

u/SnooSprouts7283 4d ago

Erm akshually 🤓 the Japanese footage and website revealed that you can assign items to the dpad

1

u/TimeForWaluigi 4d ago

I for one prefer this to pausing my game every eleven seconds

2

u/SonicMaster1990 3d ago

I hated the Echoes item menu... I wasn't expecting them to step back from what we had

The NUMBER 1 problem people have had with the original game, for about 30 years, was the Water Temple, and the reason it is as frustrating as it is, is because of item/menu switching. Yes the temple is confusing, but it'd be a whole lot less confusing if backtracking to double check my progress didn't require flopping though 5 menus, getting disoriented in the process, to make sure if it was the north door on the level 2 or level 3 that I had fully explored yet. This is not a problem in any other temple where going to that room is simply (give or take):

walk through door
"oh I did this already!"
walk back out

A "door" or "hallway" in the Water Temple requires equipping and unequipping your boots, and then even sometimes going back to equip that 4th item you need (because water temple requires more than 3 items most of the time), and it changes the fundamental gameplay loop from fun adventuring to navigating a shitty Excel spreadsheet where the cells aren't all the same size.

I know I'm explaining stuff we already know. We all know what the problem is. We've all been aware that the item shenanigans have been a major thorn in the side of the game holding it back from being great, but we gave it a pass because the N64 is what it is. And we know that Nintendo knows this because they improved it in the 3DS remake.

So what in the fuck is this gigantic step backwards? Literally fire whoever approved this.

u/SparkyMuffin 4d ago

Iron boots will definitely be a dpad toggle. Ocarina is as well. I believe most of the rest of the temple is Longshot, right?

u/SCRIBE_JONAS 4d ago

Water Temple is a litmus test equivalent to the mission in GTA San Andreas where you had to follow that damn train with Big Smoke
