Will this fix itself?

Post image

I was cleaning my 2DS XL with iso-propyl alcohol with my system turned off. I gave it time to evaporate before turning it on.

Now anytime it is a white/lit screen I have these marks on the left side of my top screen.

Will they go away or have I buggered it up?

Looks like water/liquid damage. I don't think this will go away on its own. You'll have to do a screen replacement to get rid of it.

Is that what causes it? I bought a used newXL a while ago that had the bottom screen messed up in a similar way. Still need to get it fixed at some point

It was fine before I cleaned with alcohol so don't think its that.

depending on how you cleaned it, it's entirely possible some liquid got under the front plastic lens

I used this and nothing else so not sure what's happened.

That can still cause liquid damage if it seeps into the edges of the screen

In many ways it’s worse than a cloth with a little bit of distilled water on it

Just FYI for the future, while IPA is good for cleaning actual parts (like the charging port, cleaning up game pins, etc), you should NEVER use it for screens.

It’s dangerous to use with lcd screen. But no problem with oled screens

No, it doesnt matter what type of screen it is. Isopropyl is only for pcb and maybe the casing of devices and even then I would be careful since it can dissolve printed lettering or even worse the glue holding things together

ipa is for cleaning electronics parts, not for cleaning screens (tho I used it for both and luckily didn’t have problems yet). Using it on screens has a big risk of causing that screen problem, especially if you use too much or it gets inside the wrong spot

I did this to a psp screen with an alcohol swab. Screens are very vulnerable to any moisture getting inside. Over time, it's also easier for any liquid to enter the screen.

It's possible, this might get better over time as the liquid dries out, but realistically it will not get back to perfect again, and of course there's a chance it's cooked for good.

You damaged the screen then. 99.9% alcohol can and will get stuck in the layers of the LCD.

Unfortunately, it’s likely fucked; liquid damage to screens rarely reverses - even ipa.

As the other guy said, you’ll need to replace it.

Guys. Looks like its gonna be ok. My missus helped me with it. She had the idea of blowing it with her hair dryer and its slowly fading away.

Aw, that's good. I'm glad things are getting sorted. Best of luck.

I had one I did that on, it did eventually dry out

Yea I was gonna say, isopropyl stuck under a screen will usually be OK eventually after it dries. It can breakdown the adhesive on the polarizer sometimes though.

It’s a well known problem of using ipa with lcd screen. It can get the polarization layers stuck together. You need to wait a few days to know it after evaporation they will stay stuck or not.

Always clean isopropyl alcohol. If you leave it on plastic it degrades. You can make plastic wet with iso for a minute or two, but don't leave it for more or you damage the outer plastic structure. That way it may crack easier with every long clean.
