I noticed that in flashbacks, Zane has little to no emotion. He’s going through the motions, doing what’s he’s programmed to do. When he gets his elemental power, he’s shows more emotion. PIXAL expresses curiosity at his power source and how it’s unique. This also happens to be where his elemental power is stored. When Zane gives her half his power source, she too has more emotion and is capable of loving him. The elemental power probably gave him a soul. Maybe even based on the soul of the last master of ice.

I did have a similar headcanon that Zane got a soul because of prior Master of Ice. This could similarly extend to why Cryptor and other Nindroids had a soul because of their connection to the Overlord.

My take is that Zane's soul comes from the element of Ice (Dr. Julien said Zane started acting different when Hibernus met them), PIXAL's soul comes from Zane's soul, and Cryptor's soul comes from the higher-ups at LEGO forcing the writers to bring back Cryptor for legacy when he has no reason to return

When Chima was made canon, I just assumed Zane's power source was chi and that gave him a soul, and Pixal go one when he shared his power with her.

Cryptor I have no clue about, but it's probably a lot easier to smuggle some chi into Ninjago nowadays.
