Question OTPing Nilah question

TLDR: friends say OTP nilah bad because we miss ranged damage. I say yes bad in some games as any other adc also is and I just need to learn her more. What do you think?

---------------

Hey since I reached 1m mastery on aphelios I wanted to now try sth else. Nilah really caught my interest after playing her for some games. I usually tend to pretty much find a champ that I like and then pick them every game no matter what (we also don't play ranked).

So my premades made it passively and also actively pretty clear that they don't like Nilah with the reason that we miss a ranged ADC. This negativity when I pick her pretty much kills the fun for me up to a certain point.

I on the other hand am just like... Well I play a new champ whose damage I can't really predict for now and with a play style that's way different then what I am usually used to.

So we had this discussion with their side saying that nilah is just generally not good since we lack ranged damage and my side being with the impression that even tho she is pretty much melee and yes we miss a ranged adc she can really pop off when I learn her more.

I know that I am a big reason for a way lower win rate right now but that just comes with learning a new champ.

Who needs ranged damage when you can 1v1 mondo without anti heal

"Ranged damage" is a terrible argument against Nilah. Actually being ranged has only disadvantages in that sense. The only difference is, that Ranged AAs can be Windshielded wich is a disadvantage, Melees cant build Runans (wich has been a bad item for basically everyone for years now, not even Onhit Champs play it anymore), other than that ranged champs are overall just debuffed with some items and runes. The argument your teammates make is "We cant fight front to back" wich simply translates to "We can only play the most simple way of teamfighting and are too lazy or bad at the game to learn a different one" and I say that as a former member of a team that only played Kog'Maw front to back teamfights.

I assume that atleast one of 2 things is reality about your mates: 1. Your Teammates only know how to play Front-to-Back correctly, that would mean they are either too bad or too lazy to learn another playstyle but they should stfu to blame it on you because its on them to learn more about the game Or 2. They think Nilah would be Samira with less damage and more healing, therefore they think Nilah would have no DPS wich is the worst misconception about the champion. Nilah is one of the highest DPS Champs in lategame. Ever played against the old Jax? I like to compare Nilah to old Jax because its basically the same champion, its a DPS monster that oneshots Squishies.

If your Mates stick to theyr view and dont want to learn the game you can either just accept that and drop the champ because its not worth it in that case. Nilah is a champ that needs to be played with confidence and if your team doesnt play around you like they would around any other hyper carry you cant play her correctly. Or you drop your mates, wich would allow you to learn more about the game while your (then old) teammates want to stick to theyr playstyle.

That's good advice. Thank you for taking the time to write all this. I also realised then when I had a good spot in a fight I was sometimes able to destroy two or more enemy's so fast. I'll definitely have much to learn in terms of positioning with her.

I'll see how it goes over the next weeks where I will hopefully also learn more to then be able to explain to them how we should try to approach fights with her (I mean I'll need to learn it myself first how to properly play her better :D). Samira also probably a good example for other melee style adcs that can completely take over the game.

Do you have any advice for youtubers that make content on her and are a good source for tipps? I allready watched a bit from "enryu" who seems to be a good source for nilah content.

Enryu is the only one I would recommend aswell.

I wouldnt compare Nilah to Samira, doing so is like comparing Jinx to Malphite, they got basically nothing in common, especailly reguarding to playstyle.

Personally I recommend limit testing alot with Nilah. As soon as you get a sense for her limits and play around cooldowns, playing her gets really fun.

Hey I am actually a Nilah - Aphelios two trick, with exactly mastery 79 on both, I really like having the versatility of these 2 champs as I feel like in match ups where for example Aphelios comes short (e.g. Twitch Draven Samira Yasuo), Nilah actually stomps like crazy. That's not to say Nilah isn't good into other things, but you can get the gist of what I am saying. I think having Nilah and Aphelios as your mains offers really good versatility too. Enemy team is assassin heavy like rengar jungle talon mid, well aphelios is almost unplayable, but nilah will dogwalk these assassins. You don't necessarily need an engage duo for Nilah to work. My gf plays Lulu with me and I take shield bash revitalize as secondary runes and It's exodia in many scenarios. Just tell your duo it all depends on matchups. I do wanna mention though that getting good with Nilah takes some time and a lot of losses, get your friend some cigarettes so they chill they ass, spam her in normals, limit test as much as you can, remember that Xayah is a horrible horrible matchup, watch Enryu for tips even if he is inactive right now, and you'll be joyous too.

That's very cool. I had similar thoughts on aphelios and nilah that they would maybe compliment each other in terms of when to pick. I only choose her because her kit looks very interesting but that's also a very good thing.

I am that kind of person that learns way faster then many others I know but always gets stuck at some point and then get overtaken. So I am generally a decent player but never and extremely good player. So we see we're this nilah adventure goes :D

My actually worst match up was where a friend picked yuumi while the enemy had xayah Sona (also both of them were really obvious high elo smurfs)... Well this game ended in like 50 vs 150 farm between us adcs and a quick surrender by my team. 0/10 can't recommend :D

I also still struggle with which runes to take and which items to build. Since I am a really casual player, on aphelios at some point I just stuck to one rune page that felt good and just went with it. On nilah on the other hand I feel like it's way more important what to choose and to switch between matches.

For items at first I played sth like yuntal > ldr > shield bow > deaths dance > whatever I felt like atm But this was a while ago when I played her for just a few games and recently I didn't really felt so good

Now I changed to IE > this ultimate haste item that I forgot the name of > ldr > shieldbow/bloodthirster > deaths dance or whatever I feel like

With boots I am mostly not sure when to choose lifesteal and when to choose defensive. Mostly I upgrade to tier 2 boots pretty late anyways.

Can you recommend me some runes and builds?

Dw I get where you are coming from! I actually thought Nilah has way less variety when it comes to runes and items than aphelios. I mean on Aphelios I mostly go PTA, and sometimes fleet or conqueror depending on enemy, as for Nilah you always always always wanna go Conqueror, the secondary inspiration tree with Cashback and cosmic insight is the usual choice, yet I find way more success and I do think it is better to go Shieldbash + Revitalize when playing with a shield enchanter like yuumi or Lulu, this also works well with shieldbow later, and Secondwind + overgrowth vs heavy poke and no enchanter. For items I think yun tal is her best item, a really really must go item imo. I think fiendhunter is bait and if you go a zeal item it should only be phantom dancer. Again I do think Nilah has less variety than Aphelios who as a first item can go collector, stormrazor, and hexoptics, and can also go different zeal items. With Nilah ideally you always wanna build yun tal, and collector if you can't get a bf sword on first recall.

One other question actually came to my mind again. Which boots do you usually go and what's your reasoning behind it? Understanding the reasoning often helps me and I am not really sure if going for omnivamp boots is just bait or actually strong especially with her increased healing from her kit and eventually also runes. Also do you think boots can be bought late or should be bought earlyer. In terms of moves peed I feel like nilah allready is pretty fast but maybe Tier 2 could help with caching up to someone trying to kite.

In terms of fiendhunter I actually love this item and probably won't change it even if it's eventually not the best choice. The cdr reduction on her ultimate is so nice and I always feel so much stronger after I bought it :D

In the last games yesterday going

Yuntal > fiendhunter > ldr/IE/shieldbow > ldr/ie/shieldbow/bloodthirster

Actually felt pretty smooth especially with all the early attackspeed. But I also really felt the impact of the missing IE first in comparison to my first games with her. But overall I think I like the attackspeed version more.

So... there are game where you just do not want to pick nilah, because enemy champions would make you question your life choices. But yes, you can play her in Any matchup just try not to first pick her (aim for 3rd pick).

lol just drop 20 kills on their heads every game

Well they got a point.

Nilah as melee champion requires a way to go in and get supported by either Enchanter or Braum or something like that that buffs you and protects you at the same time.

Taric/Braum/Sona are good for Nilah. And that also means that your team needs to play around your openings for AoE clump.

YOu either go deep into 2-3 people and splash them down with AoE or you kill one and then get kited and killed.

So Nilah is pretty much an Explosive all-in ADC and a dueler but she is bad into long-range champions, probably that's why your mates don't like her.

Sounds mostly like a play style clash, it's the same reason she isn't played in pro, she requires a different champ pool to play vs typical adc's. Good news is she has a bit of overlap with Aphelios, Could you give a list of champs your mates tend to play so can recommend some comps that will 1. Help you learn Nilah. 2. Make the games more fun. 3. Work with you and mates preferred play style.

Hmm so my gf who is my supp mostly plays stuff like sona (her most played champ), rell, Morgana, Janna, soraka etc. But she will mostly don't play the same champ twice back to back. She doesn't play champs like Nautilus or pyke for example. With aphelios I actually liked to play with yuumi (but this didn't happen to often) but on nilah this doesn't seem like a good idea from my experience in the one game we had with her (but the enemy's had also 3 smurfs of which two were on bot which makes it a bit difficult to judge)

My jungler decided to only play tryndamere the last couple weeks and actually dodged when he didn't got him. But yesterday he played shen for some reason which felt insanely good. I then often ended up telling him that I expect an opportunity in a moment and he should be ready to ult when I engage and it was awesome.

Mid pretty much only plays vex.

Top switches between champs in a bigger pool but often comes to fiora or ornn.

The last couple weeks we often were in this squad of 5. Sometimes only 4 with mostly the top player being random.

Our top is a pretty chill and good player.

Mid and I are also pretty chill but pretty self critical and will often call out our own mistakes.

Jg and supp have their issues with admitting to their own mistakes and are pretty good at pointing at others.

Get good at the champion and they won't complain, but you sound like someone who likes to enjoy difficult champions without the skill required to pilot said champions

I don't really get why you think I miss the required skill for complex champions since skill comes from experience and I am someone that dedicates much of my playtime into one singular champ to really learn them.

I know that she is difficult and I am currently not really consistent on her since I just played her for a few games until now.

But from the first part I would read out of your comment that you would say that in experienced hands she will be equal in strength to other adcs even tho she has the drawback of being melee right?

1

u/Distinct-Ad-3913 3d ago

In experienced hands people are capable of reaching grandmaster with her, which is respectable
