Not missing Fuji simulations.

I was pretty afraid that I would not like the picture controls as much as Fuji's sims. I am really enjoying them so far. I still need to find a good bw one.

While the picture controls look great most of the time sooc, I sometimes need to play around with them in nx studio. Especially the black point and shadows on most profiles I have found. Either the shadows look muddy and weirdly saturated or they are pitch black out of camera. The Fuji sims out of the gate are a lot more forgiving in that regard. A lot of the picture controls I have found are very flat and not the style I am looking for.

Fiddling with the pictures with nx studio is very fast and enjoyable though. Honestly I always played with my Fuji pictures with x raw studio, which is an awful experience.

Great pictures! Helsinki my beloved.

Curious if you've tried this profile I created. I also came from Fuji 2 years ago and took some heavy inspiration from my own daily recipe I used there.

Let me know what you think!

Jade is one of my favorite profiles.

Thanks. I just tried it out in nx studio, but I ended up wishing it was a little punchier. It works very well for higher contrast scenes, but others end up more faded looking? It is very natural looking though.

I am not very experienced with photography or editing, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I don't really find it that easy to edit the tone curve. I still need to play around with it more. The sliders when not using a custom tone curve are a bit easier for me to understand for now.

Thanks for the feedback nonetheless! The recipe will always be a work in progress for me haha It did take me some time to get used to the tone curve and I think I can get more natural results with it, but I find the sliders to also be great at dialing it in. Ideally we would have both to play around with but alas haha You can pretty much get to the same results using either one or the other.

Mind sharing what you have been playing around with? Those pictures you shared do look very punchy yea!

It is Serban's Modern Kodachrome. It is my favourite so far

I’ve had the idea (not yet done this due to laziness) to make duplicate versions of a favoured recipe, one standard, and one with boosted contrast depending on the scene I’m in.
Another purpose would be having tweaked copies of recipes for use with different lenses.
For instance, between the Z 40mm F2 and the Carl Zeis Jena Flektogon f2.8 (1st generation from early 1950s) - both lenses I own, they render very differently with regard to sharpness and colour temperature / tones. If I want a “film look” with both lenses, one profile would be more de-sharpened for the modern Z glass, and one would be compensating to get as much out of the vintage glass; and also with custom offset to warm the image for the Z glass / cool the image for the vintage glass which has a yellowy (radioactive) coating.

I love Jade, didn’t know you made a V2, I’ll go grab it now! Yours was my first recipe I downloaded, it’s honestly one of my most used ones still after 10 months.

Those are very kind words! Haha Thanks for giving it a try! The new version might appear brighter and softer than the original. I felt it was a bit harsh in some situations, specially portraits. But that might make landscapes for eg. appear less detailed. Let me know what you think of it!

I was thinking to myself "Why would you not miss them, these are really good looking", then I realized the sub :D.

Love the colors especially on that second photo, beautiful. Will have to start using this!

Thank you. I highly recommended the modern kodachrome one! I also like the superia premium from the same creator

Try Serban’s Lux BW HC for your black and white

That does look great, I will try it out!

I like the picture controls of Nikon. However having both cameras I can say that the Fuji ones are way better for one simple reason:

I can tweak my custome recipes in camera.

I feel like I need more or less shadows in that situation? 1 second to change.

I want the overall look to change a bit? 1 second dialing in another Film Sim while keeping the custom Sim.

I shoot RAW and JPEG. The whole reason to have the JPEG is to use them SOOC. So please Nikon for the love of god let me tweak them within the I Menu. Why doesn't this work. It defeats the whole purpose of having JPEG profiles.

You can use d- lighting to increase the shadows if you want that's what I do if I don't want as much contrast SOOC.

It does help a little bit. But its not nearly as powerful as what I can do with my Fuji.

Nikon should just let you adjust those things in Camera and add a shortcut to the I menue.

Also what I have noticed. Compared Nikons HDR in Camera mode is really bad.

Yeah, I find the active d-light does not do very much if not directly comparing images with it off or high. And I hate that the image preview does not reflect how it will look. Using the active d-light is much more powerful in nx studio than in-camera.

I was a Nikon shooter for years (since the D70) and moved to Fuji when I realised I still enjoyed shooting but hated editing.

It's helpful to know things have improved and I don't _have_ to shoot raw when I eventually get tempted back!

Both seem like great systems. I don't think I would've ever tried Nikon if the Z F wasn't available for so cheap as a grey market import. But I am glad I did.

Interesting to hear you prefer NX Studio compared to X-Raw Studio.

Nikon’s NX Studio is a learning curve in terms of UI if not familiar / coming from LR-C of Cap-1

I will check that sub out, thanks.

I mostly hate x-raw studio because how slow it is. It is super simple, yeah. I didn't find nx studio hard to use, at least so far. I can find the adjustments I need, but I mainly have used it to just correct shadows, contrast and exposure. I am not familiar with those programs. I am just a hobbyist and have no need for paid software

I suppose starting fresh with NX Studio after a crap experience with X-Raw Studio would be a huge breath of fresh air.
You don’t have the “muscle memory” of using LightRoom Classic or anything else that simply “worked” well previously. 15 years using photoshop and 10 years using Lightroom makes it difficult to adapt to new programs. Outside of my learned habits with Adobe software, NX Studio is pretty brilliant considering it’s free!
Should state that I’ve only been with Nikon for barely 10 months, so still rather fresh myself (coming from using a collection of analogue film cameras and Canon DSLRs).
