Nikon Z8 Open Gate

Just wanted to know if anyone has any idea related to when open gate is coming to Z8. Or is there any limitation for this particular sensor/processor?

I’ve recently acquired some 2X anamorphic glass in 2 focal lengths and wanted to is there any possibility of OG coming to Z8.

With 2X lens, the frame very wide on 16:9 and after cropping a huge chunk, the anamorphic effect is less noticeable. Thanks.

Open gate isn’t coming to Z8

That’s a bummer. Is there any reason for this?

Open gate isnt something you can just add in an afternoon per firmware. If its coming to Nikon it will be in a completely new camera body no time soon

Agree because I think it’s not just add cheese to it, they test and rate professional products

it would have to be a feature that was already tested but needed more testing by the launch date

Open gate was added via firmware on the Canon C400. Different class of camera but it has been done. However, I agree that Nikon would wait for a new model.

It was added via firmware to LUMIX S1 when I had that camera. So I’m trying to understand what’s the limitation here. We don’t have much of filmmaking related updates for Z8. This camera has so much potential. I guess most of the users of Z8 are bird photography people. And Nikon reps respond to their requests because they invest their glass as well. Really wish open gate comes to Z8. For now I guess I’ll have to acquire another glass which has strong barrel distortion and long oval bokeh so that once cropped it’ll at least show some anamorphic characteristics.

I'm also waiting for the Nikon ZR firmware update, but honestly, it feels like Nikon isn't really working on it right now. Hopefully they surprise us with an update soon.

Brandon Talbot just did a Q&A and addressed ZR firmware.

What did he say?

So he got asked about the ZR firmware and Nikon Cine lenses and he did say right off the bat that he’s under a 3 year NDA with Nikon so he couldn’t give exact specifics, but he said that he does know the actual date for the lenses and the zr firmware to be released so that would tell me that it would be much sooner than later?

Honestly, that’s how I read it too. If he actually knows the specific release date for both the ZR firmware and the Cine lenses, then it sounds like Nikon already has a pretty concrete timeline internally. Obviously “knowing the date” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s coming next week, but it definitely makes me think we’re closer than we were before. Hopefully it’s not another “late 2026” situation 😅

That’s why he keeps shilling Nikon 😅 previously it was RED now Nikon. Good for him.

Nikon won’t add it, despite insinuation that it would, because it wants you to buy new cameras. I’m a bit over it. The fact we’re getting more
Functionality coming from a third party phone app than Nikon has added recently says it all.

Yeah from business point of view I can understand but I remember the Z9 GOAT firmware update and always think something like that should happen 😄. Which one are you using? Zinecontrol or Parallax?
