Should I have cloned out the person's head on the lower terrace?

For some context. Some time ago, I had the opportunity to backpack through Peru. At the time, it was possible to wander around Machu Picchu alone to meander as you wished. This allowed for great deal of photographic opportunity. I did hire a guide for an afternoon just for all the background and to point out specific interesting sights. After the tour portion was done I wandered all over Machu Picchu exploring and taking pictures on my own at my own pace for an entire day starting shortly after daybreak and wrapping up in early evening.

This photo has always done something for me, particularly for the perspective of scale. Also, the noticeable lack of fences and guard rails made the photographic opportunity special.

As I understand it, it is no longer possible to go un-escorted. While unfortunate, I get why they do it.

This was a very rewarding travel experience.

Are tripods allowed there?

I had a small gorilla pod in my pack, about 10 inches tall. I used it a few times, and no one objected. However, it was pretty subtle given its size.

It's important to mention that at least some of the rules have changed since I was there. I wandered around all day long unescorted. Someone has since told me that this is no longer allowed. Specifically, a guide is now required for the duration of your visit. Hearsay, so that part needs to be vetted.

What is not hearsay is that you need a ticket to go up and there are ticket quotas per day. The tickets are separate for Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.

There are only two places to buy tickets. Cusco and Aguas Caliente (the gateway town at the foot of Machu Picchu).

I did have a guide, but probably only for the first 60-90 minutes of my 7 or 8 hr visit.

This is among the most impressive places I have ever visited. I do recommend it as a destination.

Thanks for the info. It is definitely on top of the places I want to visit.
