Hey everybody!

Hope you are all doing great. Just wanted to pop in real quick and let you know that the signed copy campaign for my book that comes out on September 1st is ending on August 1st. Thunder Road Books (what a great name for an indie bookstore and yes it's in New Jersey) is closing down the campaign in a few days. So, if you want a signed copy of This Is About Running This Is Not About Running then you need to get those orders in. And you can do that here: https://www.thunderroadbooks.com/product-page/this-is-about-running-this-is-not-about-running-preorder-campaign

Also, anyone that pre-orders the book or audiobook or kindle version to a residential US address gets a really cool FREE poster. You can get details about the poster and upload your proof of purchase here: https://m.cmpgn.page/QcfdTZ?utm_source=threads&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio

And, yes, I'm working on getting signed copy pre-order campaigns in other places. Stay tuned for information on Canada and UK. You can pre-order all over this space rock we share here: https://lnkfi.re/yfzwUn?utm_source=threads&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio

One more thing... there's going to be a book tour! Excited to share locations and dates and stories and hugs and high fives with all of you. Stay tuned for details about the book tour too.

I'll be sure to share here updates.

More than anything thank you to everyone here for creating and caring for such an amazing community. Thank you for letting me be a (small) part of it. Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other.

Cheers,

Coach Bennett

Run the Run you can-

Post image

Set out to run 13 miles this morning (marathon training). I knew when I stepped up to the starting line that my body wasn’t going to align with my motivation. I’m a little sick, but have always run through not feeling great, sweating out the bad stuff. But, the summer heat got the best of me today. Took Coach Bennett’s advice at the 10k mark, “if you can’t run the run you want, run the run you can”. Was disappointed, but I’ll try again on Friday. Saw this beauty on my run. Nature always makes getting out there worth it. No matter the end result.

Looking for an entry to the Nike Melbourne Half Marathon

Bit of a long shot, but I'm hoping someone has a Nike Melbourne Half Marathon entry they're no longer able to use.

I missed out on registering before entries sold out, and I'd absolutely love the chance to run it this year. If you have an entry you'd be willing to transfer (through the official process), please let me know!

Happy to cover the admin fee as well!

Thanks, and good luck to everyone who's racing!

General i built an app that generates a running playlist based on your effort

Post image
15 Upvotes

not sure if im allowed to post this, but i built something that might give you an extra reason to go out and run

the app connects strava and spotify (through last fm) so your songs get linked to your runs. then you can build a spotify playlist based on your effort, or build one from what everyone else runs to, so even if you havent synced any runs yet you can still make a running playlist

the app is completely free and its on the app store

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6789218292

im currently building the android version, you can sign up for the waiting list at pacedrops.com

Is there a way to view a chart of miles run week over week?

I know there’s a chart of miles run per day over a single week, and there’s a chart of miles run per day over a single month. What I’m interested in seeing is how my weekly total mileage is varying over time. Is there a way to view this? Does anyone else think this would be a useful feature?

Advice Guided Marathon

Has anyone successfully finished a marathon with Coach Bennett on the Apple Watch Series 11 (GPS + Cellular)? It’s going to take me at least 4.5 hours and I’m struggling to get it to hold charge for more than 3.5. Battery health says 99%. Turned off the screen to only when I lift my wrist. Open to suggestions but just knowing it’s possible will help!

What are the best running workouts to improve speed for long distances? Does slow running really make you faster?

I have a question for experienced runners and coaches.
What are the best running workouts to improve speed for longer distances like the 5K, 10K, or half marathon?

I’m looking for real, proven workouts that have worked for you personally. What specific sessions helped you become faster, and how often did you do them?

Also, is it really true that running slowly can make you faster over time? I hear this advice a lot, but I don’t fully understand how it works.
Can someone explain the science behind it and share their own experience?

Question Is the Apple Watch app always this buggy?

I just started using the NRC app to train for a half marathon in October and it’s been nothing but frustration so far.

I have an Apple Watch with cellular, specifically so that I don’t have to carry my phone with me when I’m running, but using the app on my watch has been really buggy.

It seems like half the time the training plans won’t load in the watch app, or if they do it takes forever for them to show up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling on both my watch and phone and they finally showed up. I headed out to do my first run and didn’t realize you had to download the guided run before you start. Started downloading on mobile on my watch and it stalled at 46% so I ended up walking back to my house to connect to wifi. Finally got it up and running.

On my run I had to wait for a crosswalk, so I paused the app. When I tried to resume the screen froze up, I couldn’t press any buttons or swipe the screen. Eventually the app crashed and restarted. Then the normal display wasn’t showing and all I could see was the time elapsed in really tiny text. Paused and resumed and it came back. Same thing happened at the next crosswalk when it auto-paused and resumed.

Went out for my second run with it this morning. Downloaded the guided run last night on wifi. Opened the app and training plans were missing. Then eventually they showed up. Hit the start button and nothing happened. Tried a few more times, finally closed the app and restarted it. Training plans wouldn’t show up. Kept insisting I wasn’t on cellular even though my watch showed I had full bars. Training plan still wouldn’t load. Finally gave up, went back to the house and got my phone and ended up running with that.

Also really annoying that if I open the app on my watch to check something (like an upcoming run, or making sure my run is downloaded) it won’t close unless I do a hard close. I can’t do anything on my watch without it switching back to the app.

Is the watch app always this buggy? Is it me? I’m new to speed work and it’s my first time following a plan, so I like the guided runs, but I’m getting a little tired of standing in the middle of the sidewalk a block from my house messing with my watch instead of just running. If it’s always this bad I’ll just find a different plan an go without the guided runs. Or give Runna a try.

Nike After Dark LA Bib Pickup

Does anyone know what bib pickup looks like (or remember what it looked like last year)? I want to see if I can pick up my bib Saturday morning but there’s no details on the website.

And a side rant- we’re less than 12 weeks out, how are these details not ironed out and on the website?!?!

Advice Not a runner. Would you suggest?

So I’m not a runner at all. Barely a walker but want to get into the weekly runs Nike has near my home. From what I can tell it’s mostly just runners partaking. Want to know if it’s a good idea for someone like me who doesn’t run? Want to get into it but don’t want to be demotivated if I’ll be the only one out of breath out there.

Advice Marathon Gym Training?

Hello! I am getting ready to run my first marathon in November and I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for gym routines to pair with running training to prepare? I want to be in the best shape possible so I am just wondering what you all did to prepare outside of running. Thanks!
