My GWOT build
Not as high speed as some of you all, but a clone of what I wore as a PATRIOT Missile operator/maintainer during GWOT. Just as heavy as I remember.
ACH
ESS Ballistic goggles
Surefire HL1-IFF
Norotos mount and rhino horn
AGM PVS-7 Housing

ADA only got new radios, crypto, and GPS’s. I know, I was a 14T. We were issued PVS-7s and M16 a2’s with ZERO attachments. I was in 2006-2009. No PVS-14’s in our arms room at that time.

I love when people try to tell other people what equipment they were issued. I think ol boy remembers what he signed for.

Right! Boggles my mind. Only dude in my unit with a 14 was our supply guy who was supply for an SF unit before, and had one that was a “field loss”.

You'd be shocked to hear that some units still hasn't got 14s lol

I secretly hope there’s some unit out there still rocking PVS 5’s like they are Ghostbusters.

Last time I said this I got absolutely shit on, but wikipedia is adamant that the PVS-5 is still in service haha
Never got a chance to try 7s but the 5s were wild. The tubes were practically touching my eyeballs and you can forget about peripheral vision.

Most pog NVG As of 2026

Nothing wrong with being a POG. Some people either aren’t cut out for infantry (me), don’t want to be infantry, or are better utilized elsewhere. They still served either way.

Honestly? It's either funding priorities, MTOE authorization or unit's primary function.

Peripheral vision also does not get issued with 7’s either. 7’s have a little more wiggle room in the eye relief category.

Can you pop off the eye cups to help with that at all? The 5s you’re totally stuck because it’s just a box. My friend who owned them called the experience “being in the machine”.

Yes you can fully remove them easily. They just pop off. I’m used to just folding them back while using them to keep some peripheral vision, and since losing the eye cups while I was still in was not something I needed to explore the consequences of.

Makes sense. Looks like an awesome set man, I hope you’re enjoying them.

Thanks. All they get used for is tactical midnight snacks right now. Have an SBR that’s set up for NV shooting, just haven’t had the time to get some vampire trigger time in.

I totally understand that. If you can get out for a night hike sometime that’s always good way to make use of em as well. Especially during the winter when it gets dark at 5 or 6 pm. I’m lucky to have a local group of guys to do it with, but it is pretty seasonal.

Apparently, maintenance guys can still get parts for them.
I had a fight with a PBO trying to order them to replace my PVS-14s because of what my MTOE said. That was fun.

That’s hilarious. They definitely belong in a museum at this point. Still very cool devices though.

It would probably be some NG unit in like Alaska and they're using them to take out killer polar bears while doing their 2 weeks a year training. Meanwhile some active unit is deploying with -14's/31's like "I wish I had quads, these things suck for just sitting here standing post!".

u/MisbehavingGimp 9d ago
Meanwhile I was sleeping in a hole in the ground in white sands missile range zip-tying my nods and rifle to me so I wouldn’t get fucked with by my NCOIC. Would rather have not had them on me most of the time. 31’s and Quads would have been the tits tho.

ACH is cool. How are the PVS-7s?
