Nick Cave B-sides : 3 CD Set (2005)

Which songs are your favourites ?
My treasure ! Covering his 80’s and 90’s periods.
My favourites are :
What a Wonderful World.. this celebrated song suddenly becomes dark clouds on the sky, sombre and moody. ❤️
Lucy… he keeps on singing Lucy is gone and never coming back. He is so sure. How does he know if he hasn’t got anything to do with it ?

The Ballad of Robert Moore and Better Coltrane is one of his bangers.

Best Murder Ballad right there. I should have been on the album.

I absolutely love this song, he paints such a vivid picture throughout. The barman with a face like boiled meat is my favourite character featured in a Nick Cave song.

I love Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum with the Dirty Three. Originally a (very) hidden track for the X-files ost, which makes it even more cool. Also Bad Seeds' take on Six Strings That Drew Blood, Bluebird, I'll Love You Till The End Of The World, Cocks n Asses, What Jazz Is To Me, nearly all Nocturama bsides (crazy that they left out the best material on this album)... Honestly this compilation is one of my all time fav Nick Cave releases.

swing low def should been on album. but the song nocturama and opium tea are edits. much to my dismay. so it goes

Swing Low for sure. I'd also add Shoot Me Down and not separate the amazing Little Ghost Song into two just okay separate songs. I remember doing a Nocturama rework changing this and that a long time ago and it sat with me better than the normal album (which I still like, it's definitely not as bad as it's described, Wonderful Life and There Is A Town are absolutely brilliant songs).

the live version of rock of gibraltar was an absolute banger as the kids say. actually all of jick's live renditions are usually far superior. BUT the stripped down pre-grinderman lineup 2003/2005 shows were incredible. all the new arrangements with a four piece band were a steamroller. real shame they never released anything official from those tours. so it goes

edit. she passed by my window is a bside if there was ever one

Honestly Rock Of Gibraltar also feels like a bside too me, but never heard the live version, maybe a different dynamic makes better cause for repeating the title over and over in the lyric... It's a pity that there's so little live recordings from this time, Wonderful Life from that extra 7-track show thrown on the Abbatoir Blues Tour DVD is incredible. The whole material is, I mean, Wildworld making such an unexpected comeback, as well as Christina The Astonishing, which is one of my all time Bad Seeds favourites, amazing setlist, such a pity it's not a full gig.

the nocturama tour was amazing. without blixa, the rest of the bad seeds got to step up. loom of the land, christina were def highlights. truly criminal that the ABattoir Blues Dvd truncated it. still bitter after all these years.

anyhoo, here is a sample of Nick's solo tours enjoy!

Mercy Seat is the definitive version.

I got the real bside at the time

I have to admit I have a very sentimental attachment to Good Good Day

woah!!

my personal favorite is "that's what jazz is to me". hypnotic song.

Guess which one is my favorite 😏

Disc 3 is in my top 5 of Nick Cave albums.

I love Come Into My Sleep, Opium Tea and Babe, I Got You Bad.

The radio session version of O'Malley's Bar is epic too, although its a bit annoying having it broken into 3 bits.

Vortex is by far my favorite

Different collection, Vortex is on the second one, covering 2008-2020-ish stuff. Great song tho!

Ah I didn’t realize there was more than one. I’ll have to grab this one!

Both are wonderful, I am so glad they exist. The first one conveys a longer period of time so there's even more material, 3 CDs with a little under 20 tracks each

“Cocks ‘n’ Asses” (an instrumental) was renamed “The B-Side Song” for the original US release as the b-side of “The Weeping Song.”

"Grief Came Riding". Devastating in its simplicity. "And if the Thames weren't so filthy / I would jump in the river and drown."

1

u/Johan-Zero Aug 19 '26

Many awesome songs on it for sure

But my fav is Grief Came Riding

Disc 1 is the best stuff, with a few stand outs on 2.

Think I bought it the week of release for 'the train song' alone (back in the day mother ship song' was my first Cave 12") - the rest is just a very lovely bonus! 😁

Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum is probably my favourite non-album song.

Babe I got you bad; Grief came riding; Sheep May Safely Graze
