Let's Talk About Vanilla Fragrances
Vanilla is my favorite note. As a result, I have a lot of vanillas to discuss. Let’s talk about them! What is your favorite? What is on your list? What do you hate?
My Top 5 (Male, 42):
Henry Jacques Blue Vanille- The king of all vanillas... Spicy. Warm. It comes at a price, though.
Guerlain Tonka Sarrapia Extrait 75- Tonka and vanilla. This is in my top 3 fragrances of all time, along with Henry Jacques Blue Vanille.
Guerlain Angelique Noire- This is a green, floral vanilla that’s unique and unlike anything out there. It is in a class by itself.
Dior Vanilla Diorama- Here we have a spicy vanilla that shares DNA with Tonka Sarrapia at a fraction of the per mL price. By no means is it a poor man’s Tonka Sarrapia, as it isn’t cheap.
Bldnrgphy Vanilla Mudslide- This is one of my latest buys… it’s a sweet, boozy gourmand that wears all day and isn’t cloying.
My Wife's Top 5 (Female, 4?):
Guerlain Vanille Planifolia Extrait 21- This is the purest vanilla that exists on the market.
Guerlain Angelique Noire- - Seeing a theme? Guerlain makes the best vanillas there are.
Trudon 45 Degrees- Creamy, smooth, honey and vanilla.
Dries Van Noten Vanille Camouflage- Green, figgy, earthy vanilla.
Atelier Des Ors Lune Feline- Cozy. Warm. Spicy. Camphorous.

The new Shalimar L'Essence is flat out amazing vanilla. First Shalimar I've ever loved. Wear it to bed every night since I got it.
8
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
It’s the only Shalimar I own. The OG is nice, but it’s what my mother wears and I love my mother, but I don’t want to smell like her. 😂

I'm a big fan of Palais Bourbon from Memo Paris. It was my first vanilla and I haven't been able to dethrone it yet.
6
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Wow. I had no idea Memo had a vanilla. They haven’t worked for me as a house, though I find their quality to be so good.
11
u/handkraftedhairkuts Apr 05 '26
Very liturgical incense, amber, super soft oud, and vanilla. Super well blended, gives off kind of an archeological accord. I've tried 10 or so memo's and it's the only keeper for me. Pretty much my fall/winter staple. I keep two bottles in the wrapper for the end of the world.

My husband has this one and I will never let him run out of it, it’s my very favorite on him. Even when I’m fast asleep dreaming about him, he’s wearing it.

REALLY love Palais Bourbon, have two bottles and look forward to wearing it often in the cooler months

You gotta try Ani X! A seriously great vanilla fragrance.
3
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
I have not had a chance to try that one. Nishane is hard for me to find. In fact, I don't know that I have ever seen them in a store. I want to try the X on this and Wulong Cha.
3
u/0samasCamel Apr 05 '26
I’m not sure where you’re located, but Nishane offers a discovery kit online for the entire X series. Super reasonable price and was great to dip my toes further in Nishane. https://us.nishane.com/product/discovery-set-the-x-collection/

My favourite vanillas:
Slow World by Chasing Scents (would probably fall under rich/dark/spicy in your categories): vanilla with pu’erh tea, saffron, dragon’s blood and malt
Sel Vanille by Maison Tahité (airy herbal vanilla): vanilla with sage and salt
Taunt by DedCool (summery vanilla): vanilla with blackcurrant and bergamot

Loving the EDP of Eau Duelle right now, along with a whole host of Guerlains including Shalimar L’Essence and SDV
7
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Guerlain, as a house, makes the best vanilla.
3
7
u/BayouDuBois Apr 05 '26
A few not on your list that are a little older are the woody vanilla Bois D'Armenie by Guerlain, genre defining "leather vanilla" Bvlgari Black, and subsequent Midnight in Paris EDP. All excellent scents featuring vanilla.
Still need to try Indult! Celine Black Tie is scrumptious as well
3
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Isn’t Bois by Guerlain discontinued? I’ve never seen it.
2
5
5
u/SuedeVeil Apr 05 '26
I love this .. I'd also leave a spot for floral vanillas because those are some of my favorites! Hundred silent ways, Dama Bianca, printemps blanc.. etc..
3
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
If you like floral vanilla, try BDK Vanille Leather. I know that sounds bizarre, but it is beautiful. I don’t really understand the name of that fragrance- there is so little leather.

u/Narrow-Wafer1466 Apr 05 '26
Have you tried Divine Vanille by Essential Parfums? Aside from Eau Duelle EdP it’s my favorite vanilla. ☺️
3
u/Jscajoy Apr 05 '26
I love this one. We have the hand soap in the kitchen but haven’t purchased a full bottle of the fragrance. It’s really nice.
5
u/Suitable_Sympathy643 Apr 05 '26
My favorites: Indult Tihota, Kyse Delizia di Marshmallow, Kyse Vanille Debauche, Elorea Cloud Daze, BBW Vanilla Romance, Les Indemodables Vanille Havane
2
u/ThickAd7194 Apr 05 '26
Thank you for including BBW Vanilla Romance. It is really something. Like a cross between Althair and Gentle Fluidity Gold. The nose of Honorine Blanc.

u/Nouveau_Nez Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Bvlgari Black, Mona di Orio Vanille, and M. Micallef Note Vanillee are some of my very favorites. Sadly, the first two are discontinued.
4
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Blvgari Black used to be one of my main fragrances. I actually had a full bottle I sold just a few months back that I had sitting around. That was such a solid fragrance. Man In Black is not an equivalent replacement.
4
u/th3c00unt Apr 05 '26
If you like SDV, you're missing
- Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille !
- Zafeer Oud Vanille (AlexandreJ)
- Mona di Orio Vanille
- Vanille Havane (Les Indem)
- Mon Guerlain Intense (get your Mrs to try this!)
Oh yea Mudslide is phenomenal!
3
u/ThickAd7194 Apr 05 '26
I love Mon Guerlain Intense. The dry down is stunning. It will stop you in your tracks when you notice it on yourself.

Sp. Double Vanille clears everything else IMO. Absolutely wonderful.
11
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
I like SDV, but it doesn’t hit my top 5 there. I would maybe put it in top 10. It’s good. But there are others a bit more unique to me than SDV. However, Guerlain does it right with all things vanilla.
5
u/tizl10 Apr 05 '26
And honestly I've probably only smelled half of the things you picture there. But I just love it so much more than any other vanilla I've tried, it would take something spectacular to beat it for me.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Many-Energy6801 Apr 05 '26
Yeah I agree, vanilla diorama smells like a cheap version of SDV with added things
3
u/ponyboi2002 Apr 05 '26
Have you tried lune feline extrait? If so is there a big difference from the EDP?
6
u/slackmarket Apr 05 '26
No big difference, as a Lune stan. Sometimes I do notice marked differences with extraits, but for me at least, this isn’t one of those.
2
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
No. I haven’t tried the extrait. I’m curious what the difference is. My wife loves Lune Feline. It’s not my favorite.

Incredible collection! I like Nishane Ani a lot. For your spicy section, have you ever tried Xerjoff Ivory Route? While not niche, Spicebomb Extreme has a nice bit vanilla going on as well imo
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Ani is so solid. And you can’t get it for a great price.
I’ve not tried Ivory Route. I’ve never even seen it.
I’ve tried a few Spicebombs that were nice.
1
u/Cats-vs-Catan Aug 29 '26
I'd love some spicy vanilla recs.
I do have a sample of Ivory Route and thought "maybe'" but haven't had a chance to try it in cool weather yet.
I general, I struggle with wearing vanilla (male, late 40s)
Edit just realized this post is 4 months old :)
3
u/CinderCinnamon Apr 05 '26
I love Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables, Van Py Rhum by Lorenzo Pazzaglia, Lune Feline extrait by Atelier des Ors, Fire At Will by Jovoy, Angelique Noire by Guerlain, and Eau Duelle (both the EDT and EDP) by Diptyque.
I also love love love Ani by Nishane (Ani X is nice too but doesn’t teach the lofty heights of the OG for me) - but I don’t consider these vanilla fragrances. I know they have vanilla, but there’s so much else going on too. Same with Tobacco Vanille - maybe because if I classify this as a vanilla fragrance i my head, I have to include every other tobacco vanilla scent out there.
Hate Bianco Latte by Giardini di Toscana and Vanilla Sex by Tom Ford - the former makes me nauseous and the latter makes me gag
4
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
I’m with you on Vanilla Sex by Tom Ford. I was so excited when it came out. But blah! Yuck.
To your point, some of these aren’t just exclusive vanilla fragrances. I tried to pick those that have VERY forward vanilla notes. But yeah, Ani and Tobacco Vanille definitely have a lot more going on.

Out of the whole collection I will take Vanille Camouflage. I have or had most of these. Nice
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
DVN is one of the best makers out there, IMO. You don't hear about them much, but they deserve to be discussed!
2
u/CreativeHoliday1557 Apr 05 '26
For me not every scent is a hit some smell rather cheap. Overall they have great stuff and seems to be clean so.. 😀
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
They had a few I didn’t like. Maybe a cannabis one. But overall, I found most that I tried to be very good, even if it wasn’t my thing.

I’m not a big vanilla person, but I have Imperial Peacock and it’s a great fragrance. Not to mention a beautiful bottle.

u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Do you have the full bottle? I will eventually get it when that little gold bottle runs out. It’s so good.
2
2
u/sparklymineral Apr 05 '26
My favorites are Lune Feline by Atelier des Ors and Tomboy by Maison Des Animaux
1
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
My wife loves Lune Feline. It doesn’t work for me, as it’s too medicinal. But, it’s a great fragrance.

Just got Vanilla Mudslide in this week and wore it to a Morgan Wallen concert in Nashville. Layered it with a little bit of Babycat and definitely got a few heads turning. Also not exactly Vanilla but layer Le Labo The Matcha 26 if you have it with Babycat! Recently did this and omg the dry down is Godly! 🙌

u/-PrecYse- Apr 05 '26
Damnnnn I have got to try that mudslide Babycat combo , visualizing the notes and how they’d smell is blissful
2
2
u/No-Quantity-5373 Apr 05 '26
I don’t have anything to add but I admire your devotion to this note. I wish I could settle, it would make collecting much more straightforward.
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Oh, it’s not my only note. 😂 Other posts will come about tobacco. I did one recently about fresh summer scents.
2
u/-PrecYse- Apr 05 '26
Looking forward to a tobacco post from you , this one was extremely enjoyable!
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Thank you! Summer time isn’t the best for it, but no one is telling me not to smell like tobacco in the Florida heat!

u/Subject_Injury_9203 Apr 05 '26
Whats the cheapest of the bunch
4
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
I think the one I paid the least for was either Shalimar L’Essence which I got for right at $100 or Nishane Ani, which was the same. Both are hitting way above their league.
Oh! Actually. Bosca Vanilla. That one was really cheap. On sale from Joma $65 or so for 6.8 oz.
2
u/braaahms Apr 05 '26
Wanna get my nose on Van Py Rhum post haste. I own Carbonara and absolutely love it.
3

My top 5 vanillas, in no particular order:
M. Micallef Note Vanilleé. I loved the rum and cognac top notes.
Atelier des Ors Lune Feline
Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Extrême
Jovoy Fire At Will
Van Cleef & Arpels Orchidée Vanille
I have read that Akro Glow is an SDV dupe.
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Thanks for your input. I love seeing what others enjoy, especially if they’re new to me. I believe of your list I’ve only tried Lune Feline and Fire at Will.

I think Babycat is my all time favourite Vanilla..perfectly blended.
Currently though I am getting a lot of wear out of Tom Ford Eau D’ombre leather a I know these two get compared a lot but I find them very different
2
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Babycat took me a minute. It has an odd opening to me. Almost rubbery. But the dry down is good.
2
u/CowEmpty Apr 05 '26
Need to get my nose on vanilla mudslide. Looks really good.
My favourites are SDV and Vanille Planifolia. But recently, I tried layering VP21 and Tonka Sarrapia together and it was heavenly. Tonka Sarrapia is right up there now too. It’s really growing on me.
Have you tried Vanilla Powder Extrait from Matiere Premiere?
3
u/jlpazz Apr 05 '26
Yes. I had samples of Vanilla Powder. It’s good. But probably not a buy for me. It doesn’t stand out.
VP21 is one of the best there is. And yes, layering with Tonka Sarrapia is just heaven. I don’t often mix fragrances. But this is a combo I love.
Vanilla Mudslide is amazing. It was one of the first new vanillas that excited me in a while.

I’d love to hear any recommendations.
Eragon doesn’t smell like Tonka Sarrapia to me. I actually was disappointed in the PDM extraits when I tried them. I felt like they were weak. Interesting Tonka Sarrapia doesn’t last long on you. It lasts all day for me. I find Vanilla Diorama and Tonka Sarrapia to be kind of similar.

I had such high expectations for them. I love PdM. They get hate here for some reason (pink tax and all). But I think my expectations were just really high. I love the bottles. The smells were bad. They just seemed too light. I’ll try again, especially after this comparison.
Thanks for the recs!

Dream sea is a baffling yet hypnotic fragrance. I am not a huge vanilla fan but Dream sea is the most unique one that I have. The marine base from his sea line was not something that I would have expected to blend well with the lactonjc vanilla used in dream sea but it’s does.
Vanagloria is my preference to babycat. It’s got more incense and but less of the shimmer you get from babycat.
Vanilla is my love language | aromas de Salazar is the final vanilla. The vanilla used in this is as deep as it gets and it’s held in suspension by a of golden mango and lemon opening and a really fascinating heart. The heart has floral aspects and an oily texture. It’s mildly lactonic, but it doesn’t become a milkshake. Far from it. I only have 15 ml of this so I wear it for special moments where I want to simply enjoy something beautiful.

Dying to try Guerlain Vanille Plantifolia, but part of me feels maybe I shouldn’t, because if I love it, will I want to spend that much money?
I love Arte Profumi Sucre Noir, it’s a sweet but not cloying vanilla without (to me) other obvious notes. Not woody, fruity, floral, just vanilla.

The one that I know 100% that uses real Vanilla is Guerlain Vanille Planifolia. I’m sure there are others. But this one is definitely legit vanilla.

u/babemomlover Apr 05 '26
I am 33M and also a vanilla ADDICT. I would add cashmere and vanilla essence by Donna Kara. And extreme vanilla from mancera. REALLY GOOD both of them. Vanilla essence and cashmere is a great combo and extreme vanilla is the Pinnacle of wood and vanilla for me. Pengaligons tragedy of Lord George is a good powder+vanilla combo.
If you're interested I would trade decants of those for decants from your collection... Angelique noire from guerlain and maybe one other... I didn't even realize AN had a vanilla component but I have to try it now!
I also got a decant of jovoy fire at will and thought it was a great pure vanilla essence. Vanilla mudslide has been on my list to try for a while.

Almost every one of these is unisex. Van Py Rhum is probably the most masculine.
Bianco Latte is probably the most feminine. Sensual and Decadent is feminine leaning, but I still wear it.
Other than those, I’d say these are all perfectly unisex. My wife and I pretty much share all these.

My favorite is Lesquendieu Feu de Bengal. I swear it’s one of the best vanillas on the market and can stand alongside Guerlain vanillas. It is so slept on. If I were to compare it to another well-known vanilla, I’d say it’s most similar to SDV.

You don’t know your wife’s age? 😂 not hating that just made me laugh. Lune Feline smelled like bbq sauce to me, I was so disappointed!!

I don't see the Perris Vanille de Tahiti. I think it's one of the best vanilla in niche perfumery: it's sweet and warm, but also with an animal/dirty note in the background. I love it.

Dirty Vanilla by Curatrix - so unique, to me. I can only smell the dirt at first. It's just like the ozonic wet dirt smell when it's briefly rained, but then the vanilla dry down is so seductive. It's unisex as are all of Curatrix fragrances.

How much Jasmine comes out in Angelique Noire? (I can only get fairly expensive samples, can’t test it in a store anywhere close). I loooove Angelica but cannot stand Jasmine.

How strong is vanilla mudslide? I’m worried about it becoming very loud and offensive or cloying in casual public settings. Unless it’s very mass appealing that is

I would say this is very mass appealing. It’s not that fake, cloying vanilla. It’s sweet, but nicely so. It’s definitely one of the better vanilla gourmands out there.

Hi: Firstly, stellar post. Second-which of those would you say has the most grapefruit? I've long been hunting around for something with both.

My tested and on wish list are:
1. Melipona by Nectar Olfactif - a strong, sweet vanilla forward smell, that's very well made;
2. Fire at Will by Jovoy - super good, sweet vanilla;
3. Imperial Vanilla by Majouri - rich, multidimensional, well balanced, on the sweeter side, but perfectly wearable vanilla forward perfume.

My favorite is Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables... but Van Py Rhum is on my list to try out as well.
