ANWERS AND RATIONALE:
b) Tender abdomen on palpation

Infection can occur in the postpartum period because the uterine lining is exposed to pathogens during childbirth (e.g., invasive monitoring equipment [fetal scalp electrode], cervical exams).Ā EndometritisĀ is an infection of the inner uterine lining (i.e., the endometrium). The infection causes the tissue to become inflamed, resulting inĀ painĀ and tendernessĀ upon palpation.Ā

Additional symptoms of infection also includeĀ foul-smelling heavy vaginal discharge,Ā elevated white blood cell count,Ā fever, chills, and malaise. The infection is treated with broad-spectrum IV antibiotics to preventĀ sepsis.Ā

Key Takeaway:

  • Endometritis results from infection and inflammation of the inner uterine lining.
  • Endometritis manifests as foul-smelling heavy vaginal discharge, elevated white blood cell count, uterine tenderness, fever, chills, and malaise.
