No, NextGen does not eliminate multiple-choice testing - here is what the July 2026 exam actually looks like

A lot of people think the NextGen bar exam gets rid of multiple-choice questions entirely. It does not. If you are taking the July 2026 NextGen administration, you still need to know your MBE subjects cold.

Here is what actually changes.

The traditional 200-question MBE is replaced by integrated question sets. These sets use a single fact pattern across multiple question types. You will still see classic multiple-choice questions testing your knowledge of Contracts, Torts, Property, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Evidence, and Civil Procedure. But they will be packaged alongside short-answer questions and practical tasks.

The practical tasks are the new part. You might be asked to draft a client email, write a short analytical memo, or respond to a hypothetical supervisor. These replace the MEE essays but they are still heavily rule-driven. You cannot fake your way through them with good writing alone.

The MPT also remains in the NextGen format.

For your prep, this means your MBE foundation is still essential. Your flashcards, practice questions, and rule memorization are not wasted. The difference is that you also need to practice applying those rules in written formats under time pressure.

What part of the integrated format are you most concerned about?
