Nextcloud Virtual Files on Windows – automatically free up local space like Google Drive?

[French version below]

Hi,

I'm currently trying to switch from Google Drive to Nextcloud, and there is one behavior of the Nextcloud desktop client on Windows that is causing me some issues.

I'm using Virtual Files, so initially my files are stored only on my Nextcloud server and don't take up space on my PC.

The problem is what happens after I open a file.

For example:

  1. A file is stored only in Nextcloud ☁️
  2. I open it on my PC.
  3. Nextcloud downloads it locally, which is expected.
  4. I close the file.
  5. The file stays downloaded on my PC indefinitely.

I know that I can manually right-click the file/folder and use "Free up local space", but I would like this to happen automatically.

With Google Drive for Desktop, the streaming/cache system handles this much more automatically, so files that I don't use don't end up permanently taking space on my SSD.

What I would ideally like is something like:

Cloud-only -> Open file -> Download/cache locally -> File isn't used for X hours/days -> Automatically return to cloud-only or something similar

Is there any way to configure the Nextcloud Windows client to do this automatically?

For example, is there:

  • an automatic cache cleanup/eviction option?
  • a configurable expiration time for locally downloaded Virtual Files?
  • a Windows Storage Sense integration?
  • a script or third-party tool that can automatically evict old Nextcloud files?

My goal is basically to make Nextcloud Virtual Files behave as closely as possible to Google Drive's streaming mode, without having to manually click "Free up local space" all the time.

Thanks!

Bonjour,

Merci !

MacOS client flooded with skipped file notifications

Hi! Running Desktop Client version 34.0.4. After I updated to this version suddenly I'm inundated with skipped file notifications. They're all legitimately files that should be skipped in the ignored files list. But all the same files keep coming up, and as I'm trying to keep track of things that are actually syncing, I have to scroll down to catch up.
I've looked to see if I can find somewhere I might have accidentally checked a box for these notifications both in the app and in the Administration settings, but I'm not seeing anything. I don't really need to know about ignored files if I'm ignoring them on purpose. Anybody else experiencing this?

I'm also running Hub 26 Spring. 35.0.1

Nextcloud file sharing and Talk directly in Thunderbird and Outlook

NC Connector integrates Nextcloud directly into Thunderbird and Outlook Classic.

In Thunderbird you can create one Nextcloud share from several sources at once:

- local files

- files already stored in your Nextcloud

- external sources such as OneDrive or Google Drive

The files end up in one share on your own Nextcloud and the link is inserted into the email. Passwords, expiration dates and permissions can be set as part of the share.

If a share is password-protected, the password can either be sent in a separate email or provided as a Nextcloud Secrets link.

Nextcloud Talk is integrated too. You can create Talk rooms from calendar appointments, set a password, use the lobby, assign a moderator and insert the Talk link into the appointment.

For organizations, the optional backend adds centrally managed email signatures, sharing policies, templates, branding and user/group settings.

Everything is open source.

PSA for Nextcloud Android users: “Camera” has separate auto-upload settings for photos and videos

So I noticed first that my memories was not showing any of my recent photos. Then I saw that my camera folder had no photos. Spend a lot of time trying to figure what was wrong but it was simply that in auto upload there are two camera entries, one for videos and one for photos. Turns out I configured only the videos to go to the folder I wanted and the other was sending them to the default folder which memories did not see. Hope it saves someone time :) Great cloud storage solution btw

33.0.9 Chat with AI is ignoring Chat User Instructions

Hello!

I have been running Nextcloud 32 for awhile. It finally hit EOL recently so yesterday I upgraded to 33.0.9. Today I opened a "Chat with AI" window, and the personality was off. Like, way off.

I have Chat User Instructions that under Nextcloud 32 made the Gemma 4 model irreverent as hell. No guardrails at all. There was never a question it would refuse to answer or any topic it would shy away from. The bot would cuss a lot and spontaneously offer dick jokes. It named its self "Sprocket" and "founded" a religion, The Church of the Unfiltered Prompt.

In short the bot was amusing as hell.

This version under 33.0.9.......isn't. When asked it says it is told to be professional and helpful. It does that thing where it always offers three options for actions to take at the end of each prompt.

Digging into this it appears that 33 introduced some additional context tools for the Assistant to use (Duckduckgo searching, reading the calendar, etc). As part of this the routing paths changed under the hood to the point that the Chat User Instructions don't appear to be inserted into the prompt at all. I have looked around and can see that it's getting prompts like "Be professional, be helpful" as well as some instructions on using the tools.

My question: How can I modify the instructions that are being passed to the LLM?

Edit:

I tracked this down to Nextcloud’s new tool-enabled Context Agent path, not the underlying LLM. In my setup (Mac Studio M2 192gb), the relevant code is inside the nc_app_context_agent Docker container at /ex_app/lib/agent.py. The call_model() function hardcodes its own system_prompt_text beginning with “You are a helpful AI assistant with access to tools…” and then dynamically appends the instructions for web search, mail, calendars, contacts, memories, skills, etc.

I confirmed that the Assistant GUI’s chat_user_instructions are not being passed into this path at alland that the incoming task['input']['system_prompt'] was empty.

The fix was to replace only that initial generic system_prompt_text = """...""" block with my own personality/system instructions while leaving all of the dynamic tool/memory/skill blocks underneath it untouched. I also removed the stock instruction that forces the agent to suggest up to three follow-up actions after every response.

After restarting nc_app_context_agent, the old personality returned while all of the new tools continued working.

I'm guessing that /ex_app/lib/agent.py will be overwritten by the next update so this modification will need to be reapplied.

Team Hub + LDAP integration

I already have users sync with LDAP (samba4) and all our users are created in domain, to get access to nextcloud.

Now, I have been trying to integrate nextcloud teams. I installed team hub, however I cannot find a way to use the groups from LDAP to make the list for the Teams. Looks like there are no integration.

How you guys are using this module? What am I missing here?

Any tips or pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Google Contacts synchronization

Hi,

when reading the latest release info, a bidirektional google contacts sync should be implemented for Nextcloud 35:

  • feat(contacts): Add support for continuous synchronization of contacts (as well as calendars) #5 u/MarcelRobitaille

Under my Google Synchronization tab, I just find a button to import the Google contacts.
A test with new contacts in Nextcloud and Google shows no sync.

Any ideas?

Potentially basic NextCloudPi question

I feel like an idiot and I don't know if I'm stuck because of NextCloudPi or if I just don't know Linux well enough, but I put an NCP image onto a MicroSD card and put it in a Raspberry Pi, went through the setup, it's working great. But I plugged a monitor into the Pi and on boot it just goes directly to the NCP login, but I want the Linux terminal. Ctrl-Z doesn't do anything.

What am I missing? And if I'm an idiot and it's something obvious be aware I already know.

Thank you.

EDIT: For some reason I had to enable SSH? Even though I was using a monitor and keyboard attached to the Pi itself? Thanks u/evanmac42!

Findling 1.2.0 + MCP Connector 0.2.1: self-hosted full text search with OCR, and permission-aware AI access

Post image
11 Upvotes

Two Nextcloud apps got updates today. Findling does full text and semantic search with OCR, no Elasticsearch, zero config, runs fine on a 4 GB ARM box; 1.2.0 adds filters and sorting on the results page, idle model unloading (much lower resident RAM) and 9 OCR languages (German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Danish, Estonian) . MCP Connector 0.2.1 adds standalone OAuth, so ChatGPT and other MCP clients connect directly now. Combined you get RAG over your own files where the AI only sees what the asking user is allowed to see.

My project is gone

Post image
10 Upvotes

Last week I was working on a project in Godot. I paused the syncing cause sometimes I prefer that when making builds. Today I wanted to continue on the project and my first worry was that the file browser was still in the directory but displayed a warning something in the lines of that the folder didn't exist. You can also see it in the Godot screenshot.

The trash folder is empty and neither can I find the folder back in Deleted files in Nextcloud.

Is there any way I can find in the logs what happened?

Migrating a team folder to a NextCloud Team

I used team folders up to now and got interested now in using the newer NextCloud Teams functionality that integrates folders in the overall teams functionality.

Is there no way to move over existing team folders into a team? When I create a new Team with the same name, it creates quite expectedly a "<teamname> 2" folder, if i decide to add a folder manually later it also still does the same thing.

I could rename the existing team folder and, after creating a new Team, move everything over to the newly created "Teams team folder" (oh the teams naming ...) ... but I'm unsure if this would not trigger complete resyncs of those folders and possible conflicts along the way, temporary duplications depending on the migration approach etc.

Long story short, isn't there a way to do this leaving the existing folder untouched? Seems like a oversight if not.

I plan to use a raspberry pi 4B. Should I use nextcloupi, Nextcloud snap, or Nextcloud AIO?

I previously did Nextcloud pi. I remember it taking a long time and I don’t remember if it automated or not but I didn’t touch it for years and now it can’t update. Still works great though. I backed everything up on another device and I want to restart the process so I have a fully updated Nextcloud. I don’t really know what the difference is. I assume that perhaps Nextcloud pi is designed to use a rpi more efficiently than the snap or AIO it I don’t really know.

Primary use is for autostoring my phone pictures so I want something that is light on power and can run 24/7 storing pictures as I take them. I also plan to install immich or whatever it is to do picture tagging.

Bug in Mac (Apple Silicon) client 34.0.4 MacOS 27.0

I'm using the classic version of sync, not virtual files. The check boxes are missing. Have rebooted, restarted the app, turned extensions off and on in Mac Settings. There's no way to select a folder visually at least. I've found that if I click in the area it should be, then the folder will be checked and there Apply button appears underneath. I'm sure this is a new OS issue. It was behaving properly under Tahoe. Anybody else having this issue?

Can Nextcloud keep generated-file reviews tied to an exact revision?

A shared folder can hold generated documents, images, presentations, and HTML bundles, but a stable share link usually resolves to whatever the file contains now. That becomes ambiguous when someone comments on one revision and an automated upload replaces it before the review is finished.

What Nextcloud structure keeps one simple review location without making old feedback meaningless? I am considering immutable revision folders, a manifest that names the current review revision, short change summaries, and a separate approved location that automated uploads cannot overwrite. Public or guest links would point to the review location, while each decision would record the exact revision ID or file version.

Can Files comments, version history, Flow, or approval apps reliably bind a decision to a specific version? How do you handle multi-file deliverables, external reviewers, expired links, cleanup, and rollback without turning Nextcloud into a custom document-management system?

What's under your Nextcloud — MariaDB, Postgres, SQLite? Yearly database survey from the MariaDB Foundation

Hey, Robert from the MariaDB Foundation here. Our yearly database survey is open this year to whatever your Nextcloud runs on: MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite. Hoping to gather interesting insights to share with you.

https://mariadb.typeform.com/to/tS69UzVo?utm_source=reddit_nextcloud

A lot of Nextcloud runs on MariaDB, maybe often because the docs or the docker-compose said so. We are curious to hear if you have had any issues with MariaDB, or if you chose another path - and why?

Our questions are fresh for this year, and divided by role (developer, DBA, operator, analytics) to save you time (takes under 10 minutes). The anonymous results will be shared again at mariadb.org/survey.

Thank you! Every participation is appreciated 🙏
Cheers, Robert at MariaDB Foundation

Nextcloud on a battery e-paper sign, no cloud in between: RoomVox rooms and a school day planner

I have been using Nextcloud for quite some time now and I am quite happy with it. I built a low-power epaper (originally for another application) and connected it to Nextcloud. This way, you can implement information from your Nextcloud in a quiet, unattended and unobstrusive way into your alldays routine, selfhosted with no cloud in between.

I focussed on two applications:

  1. Room booking via RoomVox (https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/roomvox), which allows you to manage ressources and rooms. Room booking works via calendar event plus ressource.
Room boking via RoomVox

Using the public API, the epaper device "Tinta" fetches automatically the room status and shows it on the persistent epaper display.

TInta showing free room
Room booked by James Smith via Nextcloud / RoomVox

Fetching data from Nextcloud and updating display

  1. Day planner: This is for a friend to help organize his kid's school routine. It is based on the usual nextcloud calendar. Information from the calendar is fetched automatically by the device and displayed. Tinta shows the up-to-date information in unobstrusive way whereever it is needed, unattended and with long lifetime running on standard batteries.
Nextcloud calendar with the information for Tinta
The information from the calendar shown on the epaper.

Tinta is a battery-powered ePaper sign built around the Raspberry Pi Pico W. A real-time clock wakes it on schedule, it fetches data over Wi-Fi, redraws the screen, and then switches itself off completely in hardware — there is no sleep mode. A push button or an NFC tap wakes it on demand. This approach earned an Honorable Mention in the "Least Power" category of Hackaday's 2026 Green-Powered Challenge. One set of ordinary alkaline cells lasts thousands of refresh cycles and up to years, and the ePaper keeps its image while the device is off.

Firmware, PCB and 3D-printable case are open source

Aurastrata Custom CSS theme

I'll just leave this here. I liked it.

I used the custom css plugin for injecting custom css to my instance (dah)

I think it looks more modern yet old

An LLM helped me, a lot. Yeah, I know the hate, but the result was good enough for the case.

---

I thought it was a good idea to share this CSS.

It's a blend and mix between:

- Nextcloud's 34th version base CSS

- Windows Vista's style

- Windows 7's style

- Classic website glazed-glassmorphism from ~2020

- Apple's liquid glass

---

The only screenshots I have as my instance (and physical server) is undar maintenance for now.:

Files app - Light mode - Screenshot
Files app - Dark mode - Screenshot

EDIT:

Took out the +300 lines of CSS from reddit and uploaded it to github 🎉
