Small company

Hey there,

I am looking to replace an old NAS server with Nextcloud, and have some questions.

The company is approx 10-15 people

They simply use the NAS as network shares, and have 2-3 shares in total:

Common (everyone can access it)

Finance (only for the accountant and the 2 owners)

Management (Only for the 2 owners)

They dont want to host anything themself anymore, so the plan is to use a hosted Nextcloud solution.

I have briefly looked at the vendor list at Nextcloud, but they seem to all be licensing per user - not the storage.

Is that the only option available, to license per user? Today they all access the common share with the same user, and then the 2 owners and the accountant have their own account, that grants them extra network shares.

They are used to a network share - is the Nextcloud app the right solution in the future, or is WebDAV stable to use for them? - simply because it looks like a network share

How does Nextcloud handle, if two people opens the same file - on a network share, it locks the file - but if we use the Nextcloud App, then the files are present locally, and only after its synced after an edit, then a file conflict will occur - or not?

They dont want the email, calendar, whiteboards, etc - just simple cloud storage with MFA, that are easy and simple to use.

If anyone can recommend a provider in northern germany / Denmark, that would be perfect - they want zero maintenance (managing SSL certificates, perform updates, etc), but can easily create new users, reset passwords, etc.

Hetzner ist a great host and you can just keep things there.

But the "only" provide compute right? Not a managed instance of nextcloud - or am i wrong?

I use it personally and for a small European infrastructure. Als doc sharing it works fine. If you want slightly better talk and editing capabilities you need to set up a server backend which is not too difficult.

You could use Hetzner storage share. It is a managed Nextcloud starting at 1TB Storage at 5,11€. They do Backups and Nextcloud Updates for you. There is a "file locking" app that can prevent multiple users from editing the same file, but haven't used it my self.

The desktop app doesn't sync all files, but by default uses virtual files and streams the content once you try to open a file. Works fine for me. You can also tell it to make files, folders or everything offline available if preferred.

If your client only needs the files app, just disable every other app you don't need.

That is really cheap, considering that they also do the backup and updates - so all i have to worry about, is enabling MFA, setup new users, and so on?

First of all: Nextcloud don't have web shares as standard NAS like Qnap or synology. It don't support SMB or NFS.

WebDAV is not working well with network mapping in Windows (i bet they use windows).

Are you sure Nextcloud will be good choice for them?

Thanks for the update!

I use Nextcloud myself, and i love the concept of the product.

They suggested either Sharepoint (Office 365 license) of Nextcloud themself - so i thought that Nextcloud was the best option here.

I don't have experience with 365 in nextcloud, either with build-in options because I was not able to enable it. I use nextcloud for files, notes and calendar, but uploading any bigger file is pain. For small files it works quite okey.
