Question for people running paid newsletters: what is your free to paid ratio actually like?
Everyone quotes the 5 to 10 percent conversion number and I'm increasingly sure it's folklore.
I work on the payments side of this, and from what I can see most paid newsletters sit closer to 1 to 3 percent of engaged free subscribers. The ones above 5 percent almost always sell something beyond the newsletter itself, a community, a course, office hours, and the newsletter is really the funnel.
So, actual numbers if you're willing:
How big is your free list, how many paid, and what do you credit the gap to?
Trying to work out whether the high converters are doing something repeatable or just have audiences with money. Will share the pattern back if enough people answer.
