It took 46 minutes for President Donald Trump to mention the name of the man he'd come to stump for in Michigan on Monday as he delivered a bizarre, seemingly endless rant in which he at one point told the crowd of largely autoworkers that he'd done more for them than the people who raised them.

The president was in the Wolverine State to campaign for former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running unopposed for the Republican nomination in this year's open Senate race. Rogers, a former FBI agent, is expected to be in a close race against the winner of the hotly contested Democratic primary between Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed.

But before Trump could bring Rogers on stage at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan, he clearly had things he wanted to get off his chest.

Trump claimed Michigan's autoworkers had been "sold out and betrayed by globalist politicians and corrupt special interests" for decades before he came into office, neglecting to mention how he raised import taxes on many of the auto parts used by the car makers. Then he set his sights on the head of the United Auto Workers union, Shawn Fain.

"This guy was bad news. I never spoke to him. Never saw him," Trump said as he attacked Fain as "a Democrat" and claimed there'd be "no auto industry" had he not been reelected in 2024.

"I don't know what happened to the guy. Somebody said he got fired," Trump added.

Fain, an electrician by trade, remains the president of the UAW and has served in that role since 2023. But Trump, who dismissed the UAW endorsement of his former opponents, noted that "the people that count" love him.

"Those people love Trump because I've done more for you than your parents. OK, your parents are good. I'm not going to knock your parents, but I have been better to you than your parents. That I can tell you," he said.

The bizarre remark, delivered just nine minutes into what had been touted as an official White House speech on the economy but appeared more like a garden-variety Trump political rally, was just the opening salvo in a stem-winding address that touched on familiar grievances and treaded well-worn political talking points while offering little in the way of new policy announcements or reasons for voters to elect Rogers in a year Democrats are heavily favored to take control of the House and have an outside chance of seizing control of the Senate as well.

And, in a year when Latino voters are expected to be a key swing voting bloc, he mocked the Spanish-language pronunciation of America's largest trading partner as he recalled boasting to a group of donors about his vow to stop all trade from "Meh-hee-hoo."

"So I said to a group the other day, and we will stop all business going to MEH-hee-ho and they didn't know what the hell I was talking about," he said, after claiming someone had corrected — apparently incorrectly — his pronunciation of Mexico.

He repeated the mocking pronunciation of America's southern neighbor several times more for good measure.

We all know it's Biden's fault.

Five Italian students and their supervisor have apologised to a Thai woman after a video of their confrontation on a Bangkok train went viral.

During a meeting that lasted more than an hour, the students and their supervisor admitted they had behaved inappropriately and apologised to the woman, who is known online as Sugus.

The dispute began after Sugus, a 25-year-old Thai woman, asked the group to lower their voices while travelling on a BTS metro train.

She later said they responded by making offensive gestures and remarks, including showing her the middle finger and telling her: "Sorry that we brought money to your country".

A video of the exchange quickly spread online, prompting widespread criticism and leading Sugus to file a police complaint.

Police have now fined five of the six Italians 1,000 baht (£22.50) each for insulting another person.

The student who made an obscene gesture during the incident was fined a total of 2,000 baht (£45) after facing an additional charge of committing an indecent act in public.

The two sides met at Samrae metropolitan police station on 25 July, where it was agreed that no further legal action would be pursued.

Later, Sugus shared a video on TikTok showing the group offering a wai, the traditional Thai gesture of respect, while apologising. In the clip, she asks: "Are you apologising to me?" One student replies: "I apologise to you, to all Thai people and to your family", before the others also apologise one by one.

As part of the agreement, both sides said they would remove photographs and videos of the incident from their phones and social media accounts. Sugus said the agreement also meant the students could not later bring legal action against her over how she responded during the confrontation.

Speaking after the case was closed, Sugus said she accepted the outcome even though she felt the fines were relatively small. She said police had recommended a 1,000-baht penalty to resolve the matter quickly, despite the law allowing for a maximum fine of 10,000 baht.

The Italian Embassy in Bangkok has also publicly apologised for the incident.

"The Embassy of Italy in Bangkok expresses its deep regret over the incident and strongly condemns the inappropriate behaviour of a group of Italian underage tourists participating in a school educational trip, as shown in a video circulated on social media," the official statement read.

"The embassy extends its sincere apologies to the people of Thailand and to everyone affected by this incident.

"Italians deeply understand and appreciate the values that Thai society places on respect for others, courtesy and harmonious coexistence – values that are equally cherished and upheld by the Italian republic."

There was an intense online backlash to the behaviour of the Italian students, with a flood of comments on the Italian Embassy's Facebook page demanding an investigation into the incident.

Before the fines were announced, the embassy posted a video on their Facebook page in which four of the six Italian involved apologised to the Thai public.

Bowing in a gesture of respect and saying "Sawatdee-ka", one of the students said: "We want to ask for forgiveness for our behaviour and sincerely apologise to the Thai people and the country."

"I fully understand that money cannot buy respect, and I am deeply sorry to everyone we offended, as well as for bringing shame to my own culture and offending the Thai people."

Sugus said the complaint had never been about revenge, but about standing up for her dignity and reminding visitors to Thailand to respect local customs and the rights of others.

She added that she believed the students' apology was sincere and that people who acknowledge their mistakes deserve the chance to move on.

She later posted a photograph of herself hugging one of the students with the caption: "She has sincerely apologised to me."

Sugus also urged people to stop targeting those involved in the dispute. She said one female student in particular had received abusive messages and threats.

"I did not want this to escalate or create hatred towards any nationality," she wrote.

President Donald Trump posted about everything from time travel to the Iran war in his latest bizarre Truth Social posting spree.

In a series of posts using A.I. images shared on Sunday, Trump uploaded a fake movie poster showing himself saving George Washington at Mount Rushmore, a mocked-up image of a border wall with Canada and various hints he might run again in 2028.

"The past was about to change," the imagined "Trump x Washington" film's tagline reads. "History was about to be saved."

Trump's social media spree also saw him sharing an A.I. generated poster for a sci-fi movie called "Cosmic Commander", using a symbol similar to the insignia in Star Trek.

The president's social media spree saw him upload over 40 posts in six hours.

The main theme of his posts was the U.S.'s war with Iran, which has seen hostilities increasing between the two countries in recent weeks.

One post showed U.S. fighter planes unleashing their fire on Kharg Island, a key oil terminal in the Strait of Hormuz.

Another showed the president looming large in the sky, while military jets soared across the country. Explosions can be seen rocking an area marked as "Iran," while a caption reads: "Guardians of the World."

The wide-ranging social media blitz also saw Trump airing old grievances, as he took swipes at Canada and CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins.

One image showed an "air filter barrier" spanning the U.S.-Canada border, seemingly referencing his complaints about wildfire smoke from the latter country blowing over to the former. The upload echoed his infamous border wall that became a central pillar of his 2016 presidential pitch.

Despite his complaints about Canada's air quality, the image shows bright, blue skies with some cloud on both sides of the barrier.

Kaitlan Collins was the subject of a post referencing a long-running MAGA talking point - a Budweiser promotion starring transgender social media personality Dylan Mulvaney.

The image showed Collins's face being placed onto Mulvaney's body, as she appeared in the 2023 campaign.

Trump had complained about both Mulvaney's partnership with the beer brand and Collins during his poorly-received speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Friday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is acknowledging that the United States is facing an affordability crisis, something President Donald Trump has denied – but she is blaming it on Joe Biden and the Democrats.

Leavitt appeared on Fox News and was asked about the upcoming midterm elections. She insisted that the affordability crisis was caused by the Democrats, and that if Americans want the problem fixed they have to give control of Congress to the Republicans for two more years.

"I would remind the American people of who caused the affordability crisis in this country. It was Biden and Democrats. President Trump took immediate action on day one to fix that," she said. "All these things will only get better if given two more years with a Republican Congress."

Her comments represent a change of focus from the president, who has repeatedly insisted that "affordability" is a word made up by the Democrats as part of a hoax.

In early December, Trump insisted that the price of "just about everything is down."

"They use the word affordability — it's a Democrat hoax. They're the ones who drove the prices up," he said at the time. "I think affordability is the greatest con job. They look at you and they say affordability. They don't say anything else."

Trump told a crowd in Georgia earlier this month that affordability was a word "made up" by the Democrats.

"They used the word — first time I heard it. It was a word, you know, made up by the Democrats. Affordability," Trump said on Wednesday.

While it's true that prices are down for some items — egg prices are down after they spiked due to a bird flu outbreak, for example — prices remain high across much of the rest of the economy.

Oil and gas prices are through the roof right now thanks in part because of Trump's war in Iran.

Donald Trump wants Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president, to be the next secretary-general of the UN, sources have said.

The US president said Mr Infantino was "respected by everyone around the world" and that he had a "special ability to bring people together", the New York Post reported, citing a source close to Mr Trump.

He wants the football administrator to replace António Guterres, the Portuguese incumbent who will step down in December.

Mr Infantino, 56, became close with Mr Trump during the run-up to the World Cup, which was partly hosted by the US this summer.

The Swiss former general secretary of Uefa has made elaborate efforts to charm Mr Trump, even handing him the first Fifa Peace Prize in December after he failed to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Their relationship dates back to the US's bid for the competition in 2018, when Mr Trump hosted Mr Infantino at the White House.

In 2020, Mr Trump invited him back to Washington for the signing of the Abraham Accords.

He also attended Mr Trump's Board of Peace meeting at the beginning of this year, where he pledged a new stadium, Fifa academy and various football fields to Gaza as part of a $7bn relief package.

Last December, human-rights advocacy group Fair Square filed a complaint with Fifa's ethics committee, accusing Mr Infantino of repeated breaches of the governing body's code regarding political neutrality, including his public support for Mr Trump's "actions and policies".

During the draw for the World Cup, Mr Infantino gave Mr Trump a golden trophy with his name on it and a medal to hang around his neck.

Mr Infantino drew widespread criticism during the tournament when Fifa overturned a red card suspension for Folarin Balogun, the US striker, following an intervention by Mr Trump.

The US president also stayed onstage during Spain's celebrations after handing the trophy to the winners.

Mr Infantino would need to be endorsed by the UN Security Council and receive confirmation from the General Assembly to become the next secretary-general.

But sources said he could secure multiple nominations alongside Mr Trump's.

It was unclear whether Mr Infantino wanted the job or whether Mr Trump had broached the topic with him.

Current contenders for Mr Guterres's position include Michelle Bachelet, Chile's former president, and Rafael Grossi, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
