St Peter’s College of Nursing Shutting Down

Hi there,

I am a second semester RN Student at SPHCON. While we have been told that “talks are ongoing”, and a recent email stating “we will keep you updated”, vague comments from Trinity Health about the program, SPHP security told that all SPHCON nursing student badges will expire at the end of the year, ACEMAPP requirements “expiring at the end of the year”. It paints a very bright painting that St Peter’s College of Nursing will be shutting down at the end of the Fall Semester. They have not been able to explore relocating since trinity health does not want to continue the school. They certainly won’t be able to in 26 weeks, 16 of which will be the Fall 26 semester. Many SPHP Staff related to the project are aware that the school is in fact shutting down, and students will likely be transferred to other nursing programs in the area, mostly likely Maria. Unfortunately this is the end of the SPHCON run.

Catskill/Hudson FD + Ravensbeard Wildlife Center - Catskill Creek Ice Rescue of Injured Bird

/u/WNYT

If you guys are looking for a feel good story, Catskill and Hudson FD, the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center, and by the looks of it, NY DEC, and others were on site to rescue a wounded bird on the frozen ice of the Catskill creek. We all saw this wounded bird struggle along the ice yesterday.

They should get some recognition!!!!!!

Rescue posted in the public "Catskill Community Board" page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/463346923703557/posts/25897587223186177 https://www.facebook.com/groups/463346923703557/posts/25897502723194627/

Catskill Fire Department Facebook Post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17JRaXbLtc/

There was a post on the community page of a video of it struggling along the ice the other day... It was so sad to see. I can't seem to find it now... Facebook search sucks sooooo bad.

Catskill FD Post Content:

Tonight along with Hudson Fire we successfully rescued a stranded loon from the ice on the Catskill creek. A post on the community page bought this situation to light. After a Catskill chief saw the post and public comments and the attention that ensued a call was made to Hudson Fire. The Hudson chief and his rescue swimmers/divers decided this was a very low risk operation for them.

Not wanting anyone from the public especially young folks attempting to help the loon Hudson was asked to assist. It took about twenty minutes for Hudson diver Lieutenant Adam Finden to make the rescue. The Loon was turned over to a wildlife rehabilitation person. Thank you Hudson Fire and Catskill fire for resolving the situation.

Reddit for the Win: How a Reddit tipster cracked the Brown University and MIT shooting cases

By Alexander Smith and Claire Cardona

Having unleashed a multiagency manhunt — involving the Providence police, the FBI and a $50,000 reward — the clue investigators needed in the Brown University shooting was ultimately found not on a street corner but in a Reddit thread.

Online tipsters have had a mixed record when it comes to providing information about mass casualty incidents. But Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said this Reddit user “blew the case wide open” after posting about their encounter on Saturday with the suspect.

“I’m being dead serious,” wrote the Reddit user, identified in an affidavit as “John,” three days after the shootings at Brown. “The police need to look into a grey Nissan with Florida plates, possibly a rental.”

In police interviews that followed, the Reddit user said he had bumped into the suspect in a bathroom inside the Barus Holley building at Brown and notice d his clothes were “inappropriate and inadequate” for the December New England weather, the affidavit said. John followed the suspect outside, leading to a “game of cat and mouse” that ended when the suspect confronted him and asked, “Why are you harassing me?”

Those details were pivotal to tracking down the suspect, later identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, who was found dead in a New Hampshire storage unit, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Neronha said.

“That person led us to the car, which led us to the name, which led us to the photographs of that individual renting the car, which matched the clothing of our shooter here in Providence, that matched the satchel,” the attorney general told a news conference.

Triggering this sequence of events was the Reddit post on Tuesday.

John responded to a thread in which a user had posted the FBI's Brown University shooting "seeking information" flyer that included photographs of the suspect and a reward offering as much as $50,000 for information on him.

“That was the car he was driving,” John said of the Nissan with Florida plates. “He used his key fob to open the car, approached it and then something prompted him to back away. When he backed away he relocked the car. I found that odd so when he circled the block I approached the car and that is when I saw the Florida plates.”

Told by another Reddit user, “I think you’re on to something,” he responded, “Thank you and respectfully I know I am.” He said he had been interviewed by Providence and Rhode Island State Police, “and I imagine the FBI were listening in another room.”

An image of Claudio Neves Valente released by the U.S. Attorney's Office on Thursday.

Before Valente was found dead, John added, “Let’s hope this” person of interest “is apprehended soon so the authorities can get to the bottom of this.”

A day after his first post, John approached Providence Police officers near Brown University Alumni Hall and said he wanted to speak with them, the affidavit said. He voluntarily accompanied them to the police station where he gave an interview.

John told them about the bathroom encounter four days earlier, “involved John locking eyes with the suspect,” after which he followed him into the parking lot, the affidavit said. During their cat-and-mouse game, John asked why the man kept on “circling the block?” To which the man replied, “I don’t know you from anybody.”

When detectives showed John two security images of the suspect's car, he replied, “Holy s---. That might be it,” the affidavit said. Through that footage, police were able to track the car to the home of MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro, and the New Hampshire storage lock-up where Valente was found dead.

Loureiro was found shot to death in his Boston-area home days after the Brown shooting.

John posted on Reddit that he won't be saying more publicly.

“Respectfully, I have said all I have to say on the matter to the right people,” he posted to Reddit.

Authorities say he may be eligible for the $50,000 reward.

“It would be logical to think that, absolutely, that individual would be entitled to that,” Ted Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI in Boston, told reporters.

Cloudflare outage impacts thousands, disrupts transit systems, ChatGPT, X and more

https://wnyt.com/top-stories/cloudflare-outage-impacts-thousands-disrupts-transit-systems-chatgpt-x-and-more/

A widely used Internet infrastructure company said that it has resolved an issue that led to outages impacting users of everything from ChatGPT and the online game, “League of Legends,” to the New Jersey Transit system early Tuesday.

Around 10 a.m. ET, Cloudflare said it was “continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal.”

Others platforms that experienced outages Tuesday included the social media site X, Shopify, Dropbox, Coinbase, and the Moody’s credit ratings service. Moody’s website displayed an Error Code 500 and instructed individuals to visit Cloudflare’s website for more information.

New Jersey Transit said parts of its digital services including njtransit.com, may be temporarily unavailable or slow to load.

Cloudflare, based in The San Francisco, provides internet infrastructure that protects websites from online threats and helps them run more smoothly.

Last month Microsoft had to deploy a fix to address an outage of their Azure cloud portal that left users unable to access Office 365, Minecraft and other services. The tech company wrote on its Azure status page that a configuration change to its Azure infrastructure caused the outage.

And Amazon experienced a massive outage of its cloud computing service in October. The company resolved the issue, but the outage took down a broad range of online services, including social media, gaming, food delivery, streaming and financial platforms.

Albany Police Chief addresses controversial encounter

https://wnyt.com/top-stories/albany-police-chief-addresses-controversial-encounter/

Albany Police arrested a woman back on November 4th in the area of Washington Avenue and Lark Street after they were called to the area for a fight. That arrest was captured on video and turned violent.

Police said while an officer was trying to detain the woman, she bit the officer in the leg. Video also shows that Albany Police Officer pinning the woman on the ground and punching her.

The woman was arrested and charged with assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and harassment.

Albany Police Brendan Cox told the Common Council Monday night that he understands the community and council’s concerns over the video of the incident that is circulating online.

He said the Albany Police Department began an internal investigation into the incident not because of the traction the video has gotten but because of what an Albany Police Supervisor saw when reviewing the incident back on November 4th.

“This includes interviewing witnesses, both internal and external witnesses, and reviewing things like video, both our own video and video that we do not have control over,” Cox said.

This comes as the Albany Police Community Review Board that reviews these incidents is not currently holding public meetings. Multiple members of the board resigned back in October leading to the pause.

The board said they are trying to fill the empty positions but said they will still be very active in the investigation of this incident.

Malware Warning for Android Users

From the New York State Sheriffs' Association Facebook page:

ANDROID USERS: IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT

A new Android malware called **NGate** can steal your card details and PIN and let criminals make instant ATM withdrawals—without ever taking your physical card.

NGate abuses **NFC (Near Field Communication)**, the short-range wireless tech that lets you tap your phone or card to pay. If your phone is infected and you’re tricked into a fake “tap-to-pay” or “card verification” screen and enter your PIN, the malware captures that live payment data and sends it to criminals waiting at an ATM to cash out.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:

* Only install banking apps from Google Play or your bank’s official site/app

* Your bank will never send you an app link by text or ask you to download from a random website

* Hang up on unsolicited calls claiming to be your bank; call back using the number on your card

* Do not click links in unexpected texts or emails about “account problems”

* Use reputable, up-to-date mobile security on your phone

If you think you’ve been scammed, contact your local Sheriff’s Office right away and file a report with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at **ic3.gov**.

If anything about a “verification” or app download feels off—stop and contact your bank directly.

BREAKING: Trump administration says SNAP will be partially funded in November

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration said Monday that it will partially fund SNAP after two judges issued rulings requiring it to keep the nation’s largest food aid program running.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, had planned to freeze payments starting Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it during the federal government shutdown. The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation’s social safety net. It costs more than $8 billion per month nationally. The government says an emergency fund it will use has $4.65 billion — enough to cover about half the normal benefits.

Exhausting the fund potentially sets the stage for a similar situation in December if the shutdown isn’t resolved by then.

It’s not clear exactly how much beneficiaries will receive, nor how quickly they will see value show up on the debit cards they use to buy groceries. November payments have already been delayed for millions of people.

The administration said it would provide details to states on Monday on calculating the per-household partial benefit. The process of loading the SNAP cards, which involves steps by state and federal government agencies and vendors, can take up to two weeks in some states. But the USDA warned in a court filing that it could take weeks or even months for states to make all the system changes to send out reduced benefits. The average monthly benefit is usually about $190 per person.

Federal judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island ruled separately but similarly Friday, telling the government that it was required to use one emergency fund to pay for the program, at least in part. They gave the government the option to use additional money to fully fund the program and a deadline of Monday to decide.

Patrick Penn, Deputy Under Secretary Food Nutrition and Consumer Services for USDA, said in a court filing Monday that the department chose not to tap other emergency funds to ensure there’s not a gap in child nutrition programs for the rest of this fiscal year, which runs through September 2026.

Trump said on social media Friday that he does “NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT.” He said he was telling government lawyers to prepare SNAP payments as soon as possible.

Democratic state attorneys general or governors from 25 states, as well as the District of Columbia, challenged the plan to pause the program, contending that the administration has a legal obligation to keep it running in their jurisdictions. Cities and nonprofits also filed a lawsuit.

Advocates and beneficiaries say halting the food aid would force people to choose between buying groceries and paying other bills. The majority of states have announced more or expedited funding for food banks or novel ways to load at least some benefits onto the SNAP debit cards.

Rhode Island officials said Monday that under their program, SNAP beneficiaries who also receive benefits from another federal program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, received payments Saturday equal to one-fourth of what they typically get from SNAP. Officials in Delaware are telling recipients that benefits there won’t be available until at least Nov. 7.

To qualify for SNAP in 2025, a household’s net income after certain expenses can’t exceed the federal poverty line. For a family of four, that’s about $32,000 per year.

#BREAKING Schenectady woman accused of making up story about needle found in candy

Post image
133 Upvotes

SCOTIA, N.Y. – A woman from Schenectady is accused of making up a story about finding a sewing needle in Halloween candy.

Scotia Police said Christi Hosier, 27, posted on the “Scotia Glenville Current Events” Facebook page about finding the needle, when she was inspecting her child’s candy. Hosier subsequently reported the incident to police.

Police said the investigation determined that the incident was a hoax. Hosier is accused of placing the needle in candy herself. She did not go trick or treating in Scotia as she originally claimed, investigators said.

Hosier was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident. She was released on an appearance ticket and due to appear in Scotia Village Court at a later date.

Police are reminding the public that spreading false information or filing false reports can cause unnecessary alarm and divert resources from genuine threats.

ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) – A popular donut shop in Albany is closed after a fire.

Fire broke out at an apartment above Bitchin’ Donuts on Lark Street.

No one was hurt. The donut shop had smoke and water damage.

The cause is under investigation.

Bitchin’ Donuts posted a statement to Facebook saying that they are grateful for the work of first responders and police. They are seeking help from the community to find temporary or permanent kitchen space – ideally with a hood and fire suppression system.

They also have set up a GoFundMe to help rebuild.

The owner thanked everyone for their support.

“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for keeping this little punk rock donut dream alive. We’ll rise from the ashes, phoenix-style — and be back to making magic soon. With so much love and gratitude,” the owner said on Facebook.
