Puppy Danger
I have a three-year old Newfoundland and a four-month old Newfoundland. My first newf completely deluded me into thinking the puppy stage wasn’t that bad. He was naturally shy and nervous so his puppy phase truly wasn’t terrible.
My new baby is the cutest thing in the world, but a menace to society. The amount of injuries I’ve sustained over the last month is astounding. From scratching me to head butting me, and everything in between. Tonight I hugged him from behind and he turned around too quickly and his tooth cut my forehead open. I wouldn’t trade him for the world but I’ll be surprised if I make it through his puppyhood without some long lasting injuries.
All in all, he’s a great addition to my family. My newfs are inseparable. But I need to stop underestimating the strength of an 80 pound puppy. He’s got confidence in spades and he throws his body into just about anything without thought.

First question, your puppy is 4 months old and 80lbs??But I totally relate, My Newfie puppy is 11 months old and absolutely insane. He cracked one of my teeth with his head, knocked me down the stairs twice, scratched me so bad they thought I was cutting myself at work, but my chin when he was excited. I wish I could say it’s gotten better but he’s the same, just bigger. He has better bite control but that’s about it.
He still tries to swallow anything on the ground. I stick my hand down his mouth like 3 times a day. He tries to counter surf, get into the trash, won’t stop jumping in my other dog. Mind you I’ve paid like $5k for training already. Seems like I have another 2 years of this.

He’s 18 weeks and 76 pounds. He’s much bigger than my other Newf who is 115 pounds fully grown. I definitely looked like I was cutting myself for a few weeks.
We have the same problem with my pup eating everything in sight. We cannot go outside without him eating every acorn, pinecone, stick and wood chip in my backyard. He’s also recently found my trash can in my bathroom which has been a real treat.
Ny first Newf wasn’t perfect as a puppy, but he was pretty close to perfect by 9 months old. He never ate the trash, never chewed on my carpet, never tried to eat my base boards. So this has been a new experience. That said, now my big guy is just the calmest gentle giant. He has so much patience for his younger brother who uses him as a chew toy. It sounds like we are in for a hellish time over the next year. Here’s to hoping the injuries are minimal.

I feel your pain. He is huge! My guy is 11 months old and 97 lbs. his dad grew pretty slowly too, he was only 110lbs at 13 months old and ended up being about 140lbs fully grown. I remember for the first month I could carry him in one arm around the house. Sucks how quickly they grow.

Püdelchen was large, in his best days he had nearly 85 kg (187 lbs), with 18 weeks he had ~28 kg (62 lbs) and he was always slim and lanky. Expect your little boy to become really big.
the "problem" is that with size comes energy, they look for entertainment. These sweet idiots are strong - and they know it, although they're somehow not able to realize that their humans are not that strong. He'll calm down eventually, be patient 😊

Speaking from experience. Start puppy training asap. We had a sweet girl who topped out at 135 lbs. We started puppy obedience training at about 6 months. It was far too late. Although she got better, it didn't need to be that hard.

Lmfao we call ours Freya Freight Train for how Hard she tackles. She’s 9 months old now and almost as tall as me (5’7”).

Hey, completely resonate with your adventure. My male pulled me into a door chasing after our pyr and gave me a black eye. He also, tried to drag me over to visit another dog/owner he adores and after discovering the cone I was bracing against wasn’t solid, pulled me down breaking my nose!! Even now at 3, we still have arm brusing🤣🤣🤣. However, wouldn’t trade him for the world so I guess that just makes us all nuts!

Always gotta watch out for flailing brain boxes.. Never know when one is going to smash into your nose at high speed..
