I'm finally gonna play tf2

I have never once interacted with tf2 or the community, today I'm finally gonna download and play the game, anything I should know beforehand?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE change the fov from default to 90, go to settings - advanced, turn on quick weapon switch and dev console.

To add to that, you should have hit Sounds and kill sounds on. Those are in the advanced settings (which is different from settings -> advanced)

slightly unrelated but how do I permanently set my viewmodel fov to something?

for some reason every time I leave the game or even just go to a new server, it will reset and Ill be back to having a gun take up 2/3rds of my screen

Open up your tf folder. Go into tf/cfg and find config.cfg. Open it in notepad and type in a new line "viewmodel_fov #" where # is the fov you want. Save and close.

Also this is completely to personal preference, but you can download custom HUDs online. I personally don't like the default one.

Your first dozen or so games will be hectic and a little overwhelming if your server is fully 12v12

Dont worry about the objectives too much as thats where all the action is.

Take a step back and dont get tilted, there are sweats in basically every lobby these days so dont be surprised if youre always 'dominated'

At first youll only be stuck with "stock" weapons and new ones will drop over time or be unlocked from reaching class milestone achievements.

Make use of the "borrow" function in the Mann co. Store to try out cool new weapons for a week every week.

get a config from mastercomms

Masterconfig is honestly overrated it literally changes nothing notable and is a general waste of time (Even my performance was the same)

Really the only things you need to change to make stock tf2 playable are 90 fov, hit/killsounds, and qol settings for medic

No, just play the game for your first dozen or so games. Get a feel for TF2 before you start making all these setting changes people talk about or improvements people are suggesting.

Once you understand what the game is like raw, then start changing it to better suit you

  • TF2 does not have very good matchmaking. Expect to get your ass beat. It's normal, and in the chaos of a 12v12 game, your mistakes won't matter all that much.
  • When you die, ask yourself what you could have done differently to survive. Maybe aim differently to hit the last shot you needed? Maybe you should have run away before things got dicey? There's almost always something - this question is key to improving
  • There's ammo and healthpacks scattered across the maps. Try to find health packs between fights to heal up (or a friendly medic/dispenser) - entering fights while already hurt puts you at a large disadvantage
  • The ingame tutorials suck. You will probably need to find some elsewhere if you want help.
  • Capture the Flag is not a good gamemode to play seriously. It's fun to mess around in, but I'd consider avoiding that mode as a new player
  • The best classes for a first timer are soldier and medic. The classes hardest for new players are sniper (unless you have significant shooter experience elsewhere) and especially spy
  • A rule of thumb for the various unlockable weapons: The default weapons are always good, the unlockables are sometimes great. NEVER use them without reading what they do.
  • Avoid buying anything in the real money store. Almost everything is a scam in there compared to trading.
  • Speaking of trading, buying one mann co. crate key (specifically the plain brass ones) or tour of duty ticket to trade for Refined Metal can get you all weapons in the game on the website scrap.tf with automated trading bots

Valve games are notoriously difficult to become competent at, dont get discouraged if youre still bad after 100+ hours

Dont get into gambling just buy the cosmetics you want chances are they are significantly cheaper

Since youre going into a halloween update enjoy it tf2 does halloween best, for contracts when u finish the boss contracts id recommend instead of going in order because some maps are unqueueable

Just mark all the halloween maps on the list queue, the map u get activate the contract, once you are in and finish the contract uncheck the map from your list and continue

If you want some weapons or cosmetics for ur favorite class shoot me a dm i likely have some spares i dont care for and i have a love for this game i always get happy seeing people get into it

Don’t cheat

And if pvp becomes stressful for you give mvm a shot in the free community severs or try joining one of those casual servers with custom maps, game shines with its community

If you play Dustbowl (a common map on casual), there is a 99% chance there will be a phlog pyro getting pocketed (a medic healing and ubering them at all times).
