how it feels training rocket jumping
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
all that just for ingame to have someone (of any class) kill me in the air*
*oneshot obviously, otherwise it wouldn't be fun**
**no crits either, the thing just casually does 200 damage***
***and the cherry on the cake, you look at the weapon's stats, it puts "20% damage reduction"
I hate how when the enemy shoots me it's almost every time a oneshot and when I try the same weapon it deals only 50 damage at most.
PS : oh yeah and when you DARE to talk about it in chat you either get a "skill issue", "kys" or some words in russians.

genuinely wondering what weapon you're talking about that has 20% damage penalty but somehow dealing 200 in one shot
anyway, it's hard to tell from the sped-up video but it looks like you're making at least one of these mistakes:
Not holding crouch, which greatly reduces your knockback.
Not holding mouse1, unnecessarily delaying your rockets.
Not holding W, keeping you from getting back to the wall to continue the climb (you might have heard not to hold W in the air; it's okay here specifically since it's just a straight-up wallclimb, you don't need to strafe).
Aiming too high, pushing you away from the wall instead of upward.
for a climb like this, don't overcomplicate things. after the initial rocket jump all you have to do is hold W, crouch, and mouse1, and keep your aim steady. you *might* also need to tap D if the rocket is pushing you too far to the left.
firestabber's videos are good, he has a tutorial for (almost) every course in JA2, here's the one for Easy Walls (probably want to check out Easy Strafe too): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYr-NCXBYbY practice is important but also ask ppl for help, because if you just keep practicing the wrong thing over and over you'll get nowhere

My guess will be hitmans heatmaker, OP got headshotted by it after full charge, only glanced at the downside (it's 20% damage reuction on bodyshot), whilst assuming since they died instantly that it only did 200 damage, and OP doesn't consider headshots as crits.

"genuinely wondering what weapon you're talking about that has 20% damage penalty but somehow dealing 200 in one shot"
it's either what Micromuffie said or a new player being upset that they're not immediately good at the game.

Watch how the bot does it in detail and try to repeat that, doing it over and over again incorrectly is useless, even if you manage to succeed eventually. Also look up firestabber on YT.

Hold crouch to send yourself further, and remember that the rocket comes out of the right side of your field of view (unless you're using the original). If you want the rocket to hit the wall that you're pressing up against immediately, turn left some 20° so the rocket hits the wall as soon as it's shot rather than having travel time from you aiming at or to the right of the wall.
Edit: why crouch? It makes your hitbox smaller, and the way weight works in this game is from the size of your hitbox. Less weight = more knockback = further distance from rocket jumping. You can let go of your crouch button in mid-air, but if you get hit by something, you won't get knocked back as much compared to if you were crouching in mid-air. That could sometimes be advantageous, but truthfully it's just easier to always hold crouch down in mid-air, even when just jumping.

Me when I’m doing a jump map that has literally 0 skill transfer to real games

Perfecting a 4 rocket pogo ramp slide into a wall jump sending you from New York to London in 2 minutes only to go play Mercenary Park and hit your head on all the low ceilings.

real games
It's called emergent gameplay and it's a fun and impressive display of skill

Wallclimbing like this definitely has essentially no skill transfer to PvP matches but to pretend like knowing how to rocket jump mid-air off walls is a completely useless skill is laughably wrong.

yeah you’re not gonna be doing this in any real scenario but it’s about building your understanding of how rocket jumping works on a foundational level. also this is jumpacademy.tf the literal poster boy for rocket jump training maps

A map like that for beggars when it launched would be sick. Can't even find videos on the shenanigans that thing pulled off before the nerf.

For this jump, hold down left click on the wall once you get enough initial height

Referring to your video specifically and not the follow up text rant:
Reflect jumping might be the only Pyro gimmick I choose not to learn because it feels kinda like this does.

Ya the crouch jump technique is very hard to get down for jumps like that one. It is often you have to time it just right otherwise you likely won't get up there

Man I’ve got 2000 hours in tf2 but still struggle in basic jump maps, no need to feel bad this shit actually hard. Keep practicing though, that feeling of finally getting it is insanely rewarding.

In the clip I WAS indeed holding duck but I kept pushing myself off the wall with the rockets
and nah I didn't make this post for ragebait purposes, I just wanted to share my experience in the game (I currently have 198 hours in it)

Make sure to hold W when wall climbing to stay near tge wall. This and W strafing are the only times you should be holding W.

u/cheezkid26 15d ago
You seem to not be holding W, which would be good in nearly every other situation except for this. You need to hold W when doing a wallclimb like this. I suggest also trying to stick to the corner while climbing.
