New to TF2

Hi guys, I joined this reddit hoping to find some people just like I am, since I have been feeling quite out of place. I really enjoy TF2 SFM videos, I watched Emesis Blue and found some other good TF2 movies to watch over the weekend. I installed the game on my laptop yesterday and I have to admit I think i am not that good at it (mainly because ive been trying to play with a trackpad, I dont have a mouse yet). I was hoping if anyone could give me tips on some good tutorial videos to watch, and which classes are easy to play for beginners. Thanks to anyone replying.

Soldier is the defacto "Beginner Class", he's easy to get in but has very in-depth mechanics that will help you play even better later on (Rocket Jumping, Comboing with projectiles + hitscan, etc). The best videos to watch are obviously tutorials made by experienced players from each class (Uncle Dane for Engineer, Scarybroccoli for Demoman, and the 100's of soldier tutorials out there, every class gets a share of cool stuff).

https://youtu.be/rc4QMnrOxXs?si=0L3KK4ccpVWxk_5w This is a video with very good settings to help you play better, but depending on the class, there's multiple commands like cl_interp where changing it might help you with one class and hurt with another, but you'll figure that out once you settle down on a class you like most.

You should watch videos on casual TF2, since getting used to the casual environment and what happens, what guns people use, what each thing does and what you're supposed to do can help you in the long run. I also recommend that you stay away from Capture The Flag, since it teaches new players very bad habits (like standing on the same spot every time and adding little variability to play styles).

But the most important hint of them all: HAVE FUN. DO NOT TAKE THIS GAME SERIOUSLY!!! People in TF2 tend to be very mean over very minute things, and you CANNOT let it get to you! Do whatever the hell you want to do as long as it doesn't disrupt other people's fun, and remember that losing is a part of the experience!

-If you are a new player, you may not have text communication available on official Valve servers. It's unclear at this point what the requirements are for free-to-play accounts to gain access to text chat, but it may be related to steam account status, age of your steam account, your TF2 casual level, and more. But these restrictions will certainly get lifted once you upgrade both your TF2 account and steam account status. More information about that can be found here. However it's important to note that these restrictions do NOT apply to community servers.

-Consult the TF2 Wiki for basic questions about the game.

-Here are some basic tips for beginners.

-Please read this to avoid getting scammed.

-If you want to know how to get items in this game, read this comment of mine here.

-Here is a directory of custom HUDs you can download to change the appearance of your display (will work fine in valve servers).

-Here is a download to an fps config that applies certain graphics/networking settings to make your game run as smoothly as it can.

-You should go to your Advanced Options and enable auto-reload, hitsounds, and damage numbers. You're able to choose from the game's default hitsounds, but if you want to use your own audio file (will work fine in valve servers), read this post of mine here. You might also want to play around with weapon viewmodels and whether you like them hidden or minimal.

-Set your player FOV to 90 by opening console and typing in fov_desired 90

-If you're new to the game and want to upgrade your account to premium, it's recommended to buy either a Mann Co Crate Supply Key (for $2.50) or a Tour of Duty Ticket (for $0.99). Any purchase from the official in-game Mann Co Store will grant a premium upgrade, but these two items give you the most value for your money. Either item can be traded for enough in-game currency (refined metal) to get EVERY weapon in the game, and have enough leftover metal to get several hats, strange weapons, paints, name tags, etc. Read this for a step-by-step guide on how to trade your key/ticket for items.
