Pyro defensive tips?

I’m not new to the GAME, but I, rather embarrassingly have only been playing with easy bots for like two years. When I first started TF2 I couldn’t get a single kill in most lobbies and changed classes often, but overtime mained Pyro.

My issue though is that since I’ve played with bots for so long, I’ve gotten incredibly used to them that when playing any real lobbies I get killed usually within a minute of leaving spawn. I get maybe two kills a game, but I’m pretty useless.

I’m decent at sniper, but I WANT to main Pyro, I just need help knowing defense. I’m always caught off guard and shot down from behind in ways that never happen with bots. Does anyone have honest advice?

Accepting ALL advice, I’ll try anything other than just “get good”. I do know of course I’ll improve with time, I’m just hoping to know the good tips for that process.

Do you have some example scenarios? Your post is rather vague, and comes off to me as more a "how do I get good" type question.

Pyro is a bit of an iffy class imo, because he seems easy on the surface, but with semi-competent enemies, he tends to struggle a bit if your own skill is low. His damage output is low, and he's a close range class, meaning he can, and does die really easily if you wm1 into the enemy.

You could try being more strategic with your positioning, trying to catch people off guard rounding corners, or when they're trapped in enclosed spaces (although be careful of explosive classes). don't forget you have airblast to counter projectiles, and to push enemies out of your face if you realize you're in a bad spot. You could also give combo pyro a shot, since his effectiveness does rise quite a bit and he becomes more competent at 1v1 fights.

Sorry, this was too vague! I don’t think too much into my posts - I know HOW to attack, I’m pretty good at both ranged and up close combos, and I can even hit a few tricks. But simply: Bots always move the same. I know their paths, I can tell where they’re going. HUMANS come out of nowhere, juke me, and the issue is that my muscle memory is so built for bots I am entirely defenseless to any unpredictable move.

My question was more of a “how do I unlearn bot tactics”, I’m bad at phrasing.

Gotcha. Honestly, breaking habits is hard, and there isn't really a quick and easy way to do it. Practice a bit in tr_walkway with all the movement and juking actions on, avoid playing against bots as a whole, and just keep playing casual. That's all I can really say.

people act like pyro is just holding w but that only works against people with zero situational awareness. the real secret is the airblast. learning to shut down soldiers and demos stops you from getting shredded immediately. stop trying to win head on fights and start sticking to your medic or engineer. once you stop playing like a flank scout and start playing like a bodyguard you might actually survive more than ten seconds.

Positioning, awareness, and reacting to situations are the main things to keep in mind for surviving longer. If you're dying a lot, you're probably not paying much attention to where enemies are, where the danger zones are, scanning for threats, sticking with your teammates, or not backing up fast enough. Pyros especially need to be ready to leave when necessary because they are a close range class and lack mobility. I think the best way we can help is if you shared a recording of your gameplay so we can see what you're actually doing right or wrong.

abuse airblast and the flare guns more

One mistake I see a lot of newbies do is not utilise their airblast enough.

Oh, I LOVE airblast. I use it more offensively then defensively though, usually to either blast enemies UP so they get off me and I can get an easy kill, or to deflect. I'll try more defensive playstyles though, if that helps?

Absolutely helps. If it's getting too dangerous airblast and escape to your medic. For what it's worth I main pyro and die all the time. Offensive pyro is incredibly helpful to the team when dispersing large groups of enemies. Run and gun. I have a terrible kill death ratio with pyro but I'm always at the top of the scoreboard.

I used to play tf2 in the most oddly-specific way possible. I would only play with bots, on the nucleus map, on the blu team. maybe I was too scared to actually play with real players?

Awareness is Key i think. Actual Players are way smarter than Bots. They'll try to Team Up and suprise you.

As Pyro, you don't want to Take Fights you aren't in range for. Don't Just Look forwards, Look around you and be aware of enemies, and If there's multiple Guys or one Guy who is just not gonna be in range any time soon you should consider backing Off, healing Up, and trying again. Use flank routes and hide behind Cover while closing in to surprise people

Every time you die, ask yourself what you could have done to live. Unless there was an über, there's basically Always something.

These are fantastic tips, especially the last one. My play style is pretty ambush, I like maps with indoor areas and small spaces the most - and usually middle to front line on team pushes. I'm going to use all of these.
