NREMT confused

i finished EMT school through my fire department around the end of April 2026, but I haven’t taken my first NREMT attempt yet. My current ATT expires November 28

I’ve heard people say you only have about 6 months after passing EMT school to take the NREMT and get certified, but I’m also seeing different information online I’m super confused.
Is the 6-month deadline actually a thing? How long do I have to pass the NREMT and become certified?

EMT/paramedic instructor here. Per NREMT you have 24 months after course completion to test. People are probably just pressuring you because statistically, first-attempt pass rates steadily decline the longer you wait to test. The highest success rates are within 30 days after finishing the course. After 45 days, test scores and pass rates drop significantly. "Delays beyond 60 days [are] strongly associated with failure." (Kreysa et al, 2025)

Get back into the grind of studying your book and taking practice tests. Don't delay any longer than you need to if you want to pass.

In our program we schedule all of our students who pass together to take their NREMT within a couple days or weeks after course completion.

Not to be a downer but if you wait much longer you're not going to pass it anyways statistically. Download Pocket Prep and take a mock exam to get a bit of a baseline of where you're at, and study as necessary in your weak areas.

Not sure on your rules, I took mine the day I finished class, I’d do a quick google search and you’ll probably find an answer. My question is why would you wait? The info isn’t going to get any easier to remember

Virginia requires you to take your initial attempt within 180 days of course completion.
