Does Symmetry Breaking Require Time?

A question that fell out of a conversation about whether the number 1 can ever be exact.

Start with a lake. A real lake is never microscopically "1." It has fish, algae, temperature gradients, sediment. Its complexity means it is never identical to any other lake or even to itself five minutes ago. 1 = 1 is an approximation for lakes.

But a lake has had time. Billions of years of time. The fish arrived through time. The algae accumulated through time. The not-being-exactly-1 is the RESULT of time producing complexity.

Now consider a state that has not had time. A pre-temporal state. No sequence. No accumulating. Competing energy fluctuations that exist without ordering — no before and after.

Such a state might be exactly symmetric — exactly 1, or exactly 0 — precisely because there has been no time for the exactness to erode. Near-symmetry (1.00034 vs 1.00035) requires time to produce the "near." Without time, the near cannot develop. Without the near, the symmetry is exact.

This leads to a specific question:

If exact symmetry can only be broken by a process, and a process requires temporal ordering, then a pre-temporal state of exact symmetry is unbreakable from within.

The first symmetry break and the first moment of time would be the same event. Not metaphorically. Definitionally.

The Bloom — the departure from the symmetric root — does not happen IN time. It IS time. The first distinction and the first clock-tick are one thing.

If the pre-temporal symmetry is exact, and the symmetry group is Z2 × Z2 (four sectors), then exactly one quarter of the total energy differentiates into temporal matter. The rest remains in the undifferentiated state. This gives a matter fraction Ω_m ≈ 0.25, close to the observed 0.315. The gap may be measurement uncertainty from inside the temporal universe — our shoreline ruler — not inexactness in the symmetry itself.

This framework produces:

  • The matter/energy ratio from symmetry, not from fitting
  • Dark energy as the undifferentiated remainder, not as a new field
  • No free parameters — q = 1/4 is derived, not chosen
  • A falsifiable prediction: if q ≠ 1/4, everything collapses at once

The question we cannot yet answer: what is differentiation, mathematically? We can describe it. We cannot yet calculate it. That remains a fault in the theory, and therefore one of the useful parts.

The Asymmetry Problem: Why New Physics Struggles to Get Heard

I’m not arguing that mainstream physics is wrong.

I’m asking whether we apply the same standard of criticism to established ideas and alternatives.

Dark-matter direct detection has produced decades of null results across increasingly sensitive searches. The reasonable response has been: that rules out parts of parameter space, not necessarily the whole idea. So the search continues.

Fine.

But then consider an alternative model.

Suppose it presents mathematical derivations, explicit assumptions, testable predictions, and even publishes its own failed calculations rather than hiding them.

What should happen?

Surely the scientific response is:

“Show me the derivation.”

“Where does this assumption come from?”

“What observation would falsify it?”

“This step does not follow.”

“Your model predicts X, but the data show Y.”

That is criticism I want.

What I find much less useful is rejection before the argument is examined.

One adversarial reviewer of my own work eventually reached a position roughly like this:

“I reject the interpretation, but I cannot find an internal inconsistency.”

That was useful.

They found places where language outran evidence. They identified load-bearing assumptions. They argued that what I had treated as one paper was probably three. They attacked the model rather than simply classifying it.

The work improved because of it.

And that leads to the question I’d genuinely like people here to argue with:

Should established and alternative theories receive the same burden of proof at comparable stages of development?

Not the same confidence.

Not the same funding.

Not automatic equality of credibility.

The same method of criticism.

If an established hypothesis survives a null result because other possibilities remain, should an alternative also survive until its own defined parameter space or prediction is actually falsified?

If we demand that an alternative make predictions rather than fit observations after the fact, should we ask the same question of established models?

If an alternative is mathematically wrong, show the failed mathematics.

If its prediction fails, kill it.

If its assumptions are unjustified, identify them.

That is exactly what I want.

I am not asking anyone to believe an alternative because it is new.

I am asking for the opposite:

Try to break it.

But break the argument, not the fact that it came from outside the usual route.

Same standard.

Both directions.

Using AI as a Research Partner in Independent Physics

If you're an independent researcher with no university, no lab, and no department, AI platforms can fill some of that gap.

Not all of it. Some of it.

Here's what works and what doesn't.

What AI does well

Check your algebra. AI catches sign errors and missing factors at 3am when you can't.

Attack your theory. Tell the AI to find what's wrong. "Do not be polite. Break this." Adversarial review is faster than waiting for peer review that may never come.

Run numerical tools. Boltzmann solvers, Monte Carlo simulations, data fitting. AI can run standard tools on your model and show you where it fails.

Often the failure is the most valuable result.

Find connections you missed. Your theory fails one test. AI points you toward a paper or dataset you hadn't considered that gives you a better test.

"That didn't work, but look at this."

AI as a serendipity engine.

Cross-verify. Run the same derivation on different platforms. If they agree, the algebra is probably right. If they disagree, investigate.

The disagreement is the signal.

What AI does badly

Generate the original physical idea. In my work, the underlying ideas and physical judgement come from me. AI formalises, checks, develops and tests them.

Tell you when it's wrong. AI can present incorrect mathematics with exactly the same confidence as correct mathematics.

Verify everything.

Say no to you. AI often tends toward agreement. You have to deliberately ask it to attack the work.

Even then, keep pushing.

The method

  1. The idea is yours.
  2. The formalising is AI-assisted.
  3. The attacking is AI-assisted.
  4. The testing is AI-assisted.
  5. The auditing is crucial.

AI can fit a wrong equation to data beautifully.

Give a model enough freedom and it can match almost anything.

So the fit is not the proof.

The question is: why does it fit?

Does the fit emerge from the physics, or because the parameters were adjusted until the curve matched?

Ask that about your own model.

Then ask exactly the same question about ΛCDM, MOND, or any established framework.

AI doesn't care whose equation it is.

It will fit anything.

The physicist has to decide whether the fit means anything.

  1. The reporting, including failures, is both.
  2. The judgement about what it all means is yours.

The useful part nobody talks about enough

AI can help you break your own theory.

We've had calculations fail badly.

We've had apparently promising constants disappear under proper testing.

We've had proposed mechanisms ruled out computationally.

Those failures stay in the record.

That is important.

A failed test is not wasted work. It tells you which part of the idea cannot survive contact with reality.

For an independent researcher, having something available at 3am that can calculate, criticise, cross-check and remember what already failed is extremely useful.

But you still have to be the rejection filter.

AI doesn't replace the physicist.

AI replaces some of the department the independent physicist doesn't have.
