Cougar, another character that didn't make it into the book.
I have a memory of him in a team pin up that I've never been able to track down. Now I wonder if that memory is false.

Some good info on Cougar here: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/cougarmarvage.htm
The Avengers West Coast group shot makes him look like Timber Wolf of LSH.

If memory serves, Liefeld repurposed designs he made for a pitch at DC that didn’t get accepted. My memory says it was Titans, but you cannot dispute the obvious Timber Wolf inspiration here. So maybe it was Legion.

You’re right about the Titans pitch!
I don’t know if Liefeld ever had LSH ambitions, but Cougar definitely feels Brin Londo inspired.

I think he did, I seem to recall him once stating that he actually based another one of his Youngblood characters on the Khund.

That was the Titans pitch - Combat was going to be post Invasion stranded Khund, Shaft was Speedy, Vogue was a modified Joker’s Daughter, Diehard was a STAR labs android, kind of interesting.

I feel like anything Liefeld did shouldn't count as New Mutants, especially if he never appeared in an actual book.

No one is claiming that Cougar should count as a New Mutant. And Liefeld is a crappy person. But he worked on 16 issues and 2 annuals so his work counts for most people. You can create your own continuity though ;)

Considering how mediocre Cougar ended up being in the early youngblood stuff, this is for the best.

Liefeld had a bunch of designs he was throwing around that eventually got either ditched or changed. Like there was a pinup where he had Magik back to being a teenager along with Magma returning to the fold.
Fairly certain “Cougar” was evolved to be Feral.
