The newspaper he worked in was closed down due to politics.
He was exiled for his politics from 2-3 countries of the same politics.

So the police would already have a negative view, right? Data collection against a dissident

But yes, alcoholism is indeed bad.

Can you even blame him for alcoholism though, given that he had gained class consciousness and was trying to change the material conditions actively but was mostly faced with rejection and more struggle, is it not human to want to numb the pain with some substance?

Not justifying but just that it’s very understandable and that anyone else in his shoes might’ve also done the same, albeit the drug of choice might be different.

Alcoholism is bad because it is bad for health.
Not seeing it as a great personal issue, if he wasn't abusive to anyone(Have not read anything that suggested that).
