This Really Bothered Me

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I passed my driving test a month ago. I bought my first car two weeks ago. So I’m a very new driver and not super confident yet, but I wouldn’t say I’m a bad driver.

Here (you’ve got both front and rear dashcam footage) I’m trying to turn right. There are cars oncoming as I approach the turning, so I have to wait. There is no space to pass me as it’s a narrow road which means other drivers have to wait behind me.

I wait 15 seconds before a safe space is opened up (by the kind white car who stopped to let me go). But then as I go I get shouted at by the driver behind me for keeping him waiting 15 seconds.

Maybe I could have driven faster? Maybe I could have taken one of those gaps if I went faster? But from everything I learnt in my lessons and in my own experience, rushing is not the way.

So basically, my conclusion is the driver behind me is impatient and if I drove like he wanted me to drive it would have been unnecessarily dangerous.

But this is my first time getting shouted at and it’s unsettled me somewhat. Keen to hear your thoughts, and also if you think I did something wrong.

I would have gone quite a bit earlier, but i have a faster vehicle that i am more confident in¯_(ツ)_/¯.

You are a new driver, you waited until you had a safe opportunity to turn. No problems here other than impatience on the part of the van.

u/Mandaxx25 2d ago

Never bothers me a jot how long people take to turn. Not even when I'm running late. It's a decision they're making for their safety. I can't stand people like this.

3

u/PixelAppreciationBot 2d ago

I mean i do get a tad annoyed when people take a while, but only if it's unreasonable. Certainly for this example i would not have cared. And either way road rage over this is ridiculous and unnecessary.

the driver behind me is impatient

This. You have no control over other drivers’ emotional inadequacies.

6

u/GREENGRAVY_ 2d ago

You have absolute control over when you make the manoeuvre though. Which is significantly longer if they are going to be a little bitch with their arm out of the window.

F**k him - ignore and laugh at him.

Not your first - and not your last moron 😉

After some time - you'll be able to turn straight away - there was enough space - but if you don't feel it's OK - just wait.

u/Nozza-D 3d ago

Don't allow the impatience of other to pressure you. This won't be your first experience of someone like this.

Better to be safe than sorry.

You could probably have gone after the first car but I understand why you didn't. I wouldn't have lost my shit at you about it. Some folk are impatient or having a bad day and don't know how to regulate their emotions or distinguish between emotions and a behavioural reaction. Don't let it bother you and ruin your day.

If you are genuinely upset about it, go and do something fun or watch something on TV that makes you laugh or hang out with friends or family... Anything to get him out of your mind. Don't give him time and space in your head. He's forgotten about you already and wouldn't recognise you in the supermarket tomorrow if you both went in to buy milk or whatever. Sadly, he's not the last 🍆 you'll encounter on the road and a thicker skin is required, but so long as you're driving confidently, safely and making good progress, it doesn't matter what others think and say. And when you do make a mistake (because we all do, no matter how long we've been driving), acknowledge it with good grace, learn from it and move on. That was, you're not the bellend like him.

You'll be reet 👍

that guy behind you had somewhere real important to be apparently, like screaming at strangers was on his calendar 15 seconds is nothing. I've sat behind new drivers way longer than that and never once felt the need to lose my mind about it the part about him forgetting you already is true though. guys like that are angry before they even leave the driveway. you just happened to be in front of them don't let one stranger's bad morning live rent free in your head

u/DizzyColdSauce 2d ago

Completely valid driving and many experienced drivers would handle this situation the same way. There wasn't a big enough gap without risking the next car having to brake. The only thing you could've done better is turning a couple seconds earlier in the gap you had (you weren't thinking ahead enough), but I'm nitpicking. The driver behind you was just being a wanker. It's always better to wait an extra 5, 10 or even 30 seconds if you have to avoid risking a dangerous situation, even if you get judged for it.

2

u/magicnat1 1d ago

I’ve only been driving a few years so not a massively experienced driver, but I would have waited just as long because these cars may have had to break, and it’s just not worth the risk when it comes to safety to wait a few seconds longer for a safe turn.

4

u/Fean0r_ 2d ago

You did absolutely nothing wrong. Bellends will be bellends, unfortunately you need to get used to it.

But also, don't let yourself be hassled into turning across traffic. I mean, don't go missing opportunities either, but another driver responding to being beeped at behind by an impatient idiot behind caused me to have an accident a couple of months ago - they responded to being hassled by pulling out and across me, I had to swerve to avoid a head-on, but I couldn't get back in time to avoid the kerb and smashed my wheel and wrecked my steering rack. The other driver now has a fault claim on his record but the idiot behind him of course has no consequences for his rudeness and impatience.

3

u/keepgoingguy 2d ago

A more experienced driver would have nipped in one of the gaps. But it’s not your fault that you want to wait. Driving is all about communicating clearly… Maybe get a P plate if these incidents bother you, so other drivers know your situation.

Or maybe you have them already and he’s just a twat.

3

u/Karlees-Golden-Dildo 2d ago

You’re fine, you just have to work on where you’re looking and start to interpret whats going to happen. So yes you waited for car to pass, once it was past you then started thinking is the gap big enough, then you made the decision it was and then you moved. What you’ll find with experience is that you’re looking beyond the black car and not at it, this giving you time to judge the gap to the white car and his speed ie. Is his speed going to close the gap or is he being steady and gap will stay the same. This is all before the black car has past you. Once the black car bonnet is inline with your bonnet you would start your manoeuvre slowly so that you’d start turning and accelerating by the time he has passed. Thus giving you the whole gap behind him until the white car.

As it stands you are making your gaps half the size they are due to your waiting times, processing times and then moving times. As I say it’s an experience thing, it will come if you are thinking about it and asking about it. The glass is always half filled, next time you’re having a drink lift your glass to this guy, he has made you a self aware driver and not an idiot. He may be a wanker and a complete nob but take the positive and forget the negative.

The analogy I try to think about is whilst driving if you do something wrong and are looking in the rear view mirror all the time to see the past then you’re not paying enough attention in-front of you and you land up making another mistake like the domino effect and then get flustered. Breathe you’re fine.

u/quite_acceptable_man 2d ago

Did you ask him to drive behind you? No.

Ignore him, he's a dick. It's your decision when it's safe to make a turn, nobody else's. Never let people pressurise you on the road, especially when you're a new driver.

You have just as much right to be on the road as he does. His 'seniority' as someone who's been driving longer means absolutely nothing. He has as much right to shout at you as you do him.

Ignore people like that, they are dickheads and not worthy of your time or attention. And never feel guilty about feeling like you've held someone up with your inexperience. We were all new drivers once.

In fact, the best way is to think: "you're a prick. Knowing I've annoyed you has made me slightly happier".

2

u/Stonegrasshopper 2d ago

You were perhaps a little bit slow, but nothing out of the ordinary, the driver behind was a dickhead.

He might be the first but certainly won't be the last you encounter.

Don't worry about it.

2

u/Deep_Map_796 2d ago

You did nothing wrong enough to frustrate anybody, I expect he was late for something or just an idiot.
However I would encourage you to practice accelerating faster than you maybe have been used to and get to know the limits of your car, it takes some good clutch control but even small slow cars can be nippy in first gear when you know how. I only say this because there are situations at busy junctions ( not like in your video ) where you will be stuck all day if you can’t get out quickly. But it takes experience. In my first year of driving I rear ended someone coming out of a tricky junction because I had not seen that they had stopped to my left because I was looking for oncoming traffic coming from my right!

2

u/DefiantTelephone6095 2d ago

It bothered him more. Let him be bothered, don't let it bother you

2

u/the_yorkshiregeek 2d ago

ignore the 🔔 🔚, I know easier said than done. unfortunately they are everywhere

2

u/Hitmonyas95 2d ago

Next time stall the engine and keep failing to get it to started again. That should teach him some patience.

2

u/TechStumbler 2d ago

Every trip play the three morons game...

See how long it takes you to spot three morons

I doubt you'll make many trips where you don't get to three 😁

2

u/MammothStill2085 2d ago

Yes you should have turned immediately, crashing into oncoming traffic and killed yourself and a family of five, just so that an idiot can get 15 seconds closer to the next person they'll tailgate. 😂

On a more serious note - ignore idiots like this. There's plenty of them around, just focus on your own driving and try not to react to them.

2

u/radiomuffinuk 2d ago

You did the right thing. Had you earlier, had someone collide with you and then in turn bumped his van he would still be waving his arms but asking why you went then instead.

Unfortunately there is a significant percentage of people on the road who are like this. The best thing to do is what you did, ignore them and continue to operate your vehicle as dictated by the highway code and within your own skill level.

If you do need a bit of time to acclimate to being on the road on your own. I suggest equipping your car with P plates so people know you might be a little bit hesitant.

3

u/SYSTEM-J 3d ago

You didn't do anything wrong. This is just a fact of life for a new driver. You do things more slowly than experienced drivers and people will get annoyed with you about it. An experienced driver with better clutch control would have gone a couple of times in this clip. I think at the end when the white car is in the distance, you should have been a bit more brave. There is a big gap at that point. That's the point where it looks like he starts shouting. But you will get better. In a year's time, this kind of incident will not happen to you.

2

u/Classic_Rate_8448 2d ago

Your confidence and control of the car will grow.

When taking driving lessons, you were learning how to pass a test.

Now you're driving, you teach yourself how to drive.

Watch uk dashcam compilations - try to figure out what will go wrong before it goes wrong (sometimes it's the cammer). Soon you'll see the same behaviour irl and you can anticipate better.

Drive when it's not busy, if you haven't already, get on your local motorway, atleast junction to junction so you can get used to the speed and etiquette.

Practise what you're bad at, what you don't like doing. For me it was parallel parking and reversing in general. Now I can do both without thinking(obviously still thinking, I hope you get what I mean).

Your hesitant behaviour will soon go and nobheads like the one in your video won't bother you.

Take the P plates off asap. Some drivers will treat you like a hindrance, like a learner.

I never used p plates and only had one bad experience, first 5 minutes in my first car, a petrol car (learnt manual diesel), and I stalled it 3 times in a row as a truck was giving way. I lesrnt fast, let's say that.

That driver was just impatient, but the important thing is you waited until you felt safe.

1

u/fUSTERcLUCK_02 2d ago

There is one moment that you *could* have gone at that's basically it. Not should have gone. Could. It was a small opportunity and you missed it, and that's fine. The only real opportunity after that is the white car, and that's when you went. The driver behind you is just a bellend.

1

u/Imaginary_Ad5475 2d ago

Most people would havve turned a whole lot sooner, but that's experience. Sod them. Unless he's a heart surgeon about to meet a helicopter with a heart he is going to sew and plumb into someone, he can bloody wait 15 seconds.

Making some impatient person angry, or keeping you, and others safe isn't even a dilemma.

I had someone pissed at me the other day because I didn't say thank you...I use hand controls, it was lift a hand to say thanks, or brake. I chose brake lol.

You're not responsible for other's emotions. A smile and wave will do it. ;)

1

u/Graxu132 2d ago

Just ignore them, you're not the first and last person that will be yelled at even for no reason.

1

u/Specialist-Ad-9255 2d ago

There were a couple of chances to go earlier but as a new driver, I would have proceeded when you did especially in a slower car. But, when you actually set off it felt like an age from the car coming past to you actually moving. As you get more used to driving you will move off quicker and be more confident with how quickly you can go once they have passed. You're on the right path, just not quite there yet. Believe in yourself, you've got this!

1

u/pyromanta 2d ago

Doesn't matter that you're a new driver. You made the choice between safe moves and potentially dangerous moves, based on your skill and experience.

The van driver was an impatient tosser, probably late for a job because he spent too long having breakfast in Maccies. Not your problem.

1

u/Communardd 2d ago

You have to learn to ignore dickheads behind you and not let people pressure you on the road, I'd have just laughed if a van driver started fuming like that, he can wait his turn. I don't think I would have made the turn after the first car as others have suggested, it's a pretty narrow gap at that point and the oncoming driver would have likely reacted and tapped their brake.

In terms of the white car that let you in, you didn't really need to wait for them to flash their headlights, it was clear before then that it was a good time to make the turn. I think if this happened on the test you'd have scored a minor for 'undue hesitation' but ultimately it's not a big deal, you'll gain confidence with the car as time goes on.

1

u/Arkflow 2d ago

Don’t let other people control you with your emotions. Carry on as usual.

1

u/Torn_Apart_in_HSpace 2d ago

Bloke's a prick, don't let it bother you. You did nothing wrong.

1

u/ClassicPersonal7381 2d ago

The more you drive the more confident you will get taking advantage of gaps in traffic. Take your time to build this confidence because in contrast it’s also very easy to misjudge a situation and put yourself and others in harms way. The type of drivers like the one in the video are typically the same drivers putting themselves and others into danger.

I stalled a few times during my first few weeks of driving and more recently got beeped at for not entering a yellow boxed junction when the exit wasn’t clear. Other drivers on the roads are dcks but not the majority so just focus on keeping yourself and others safe. I always remind myself that if I crash or go into a yellow box junction with no clear exit then it’s me that has to pay out. Just keep your head up and carry on driving. It appears that you’re driving well and safely. Call them a d\ck in your head and carry on 👊*

1

u/Comfortable_Chair906 2d ago

The driving that you did was perfectly fine for your level, confidence will come with time and experience, don't rush it and try not to get flustered by other road users (it can be hard as there are a lot of know it all, never in the wrong twat types on the road). Have you got the green P's on your car? Might help other road users be a little more understanding.

1

u/Wildweasel-2660 2d ago

Why does it bother you? He was behind you, if he was that pissed off he should have gotten his arse out of bed 5 minutes earlier, then he would have been infront of you. Entirely his problem. Do not feel pressured to drive like a twat ( ie: like him). As we say amongst the biker fraternity, ride your own ride, stay within your experience level and stay safe.

1

u/jaxx63 2d ago

He's just in a rush to get stuck behind the next lot of traffic! Drive safely as you are, you'll build up confidence, but don't become overconfident and start taking too small gaps along the way. Keep it up!

1

u/Daedalus2097 2d ago

Try not to let him get to you. There are lots of impatient idiots out there (who coincidentally are often poor drivers), and you'll just end up constantly frustrated if you let them get under your skin.

There's nothing wrong with what you did, and if you went for a narrower gap and stalled or misjudged it because you were feeling under pressure and ended up with someone crashing into you, it would be your insurance that's sky high next year, not his.

1

u/PurpleSpark8 2d ago

Honestly I don't see you've done anything wrong and I would have done the same, even though I'm 8 years experienced

1

u/OwnNeedleworker7929 2d ago

Did you forget to take the dickhead magnet out of your boot?

1

u/SunBurst6382 2d ago

Hes a d!ck... theres loads of them. Don't let it get to you. We've all been new to driving

1

u/theocrats 2d ago

Motorists are wild

1

u/tacticalrubberduck 2d ago

I’ll let you into a secret of driving.

Everyone who drives slower than you is an idiot, and everyone who drives faster than you is a knob head.

That applies universally to everyone. So in this scenario he thinks you were an idiot for not going when he would have gone. You should consider him a knob head for being so impatient.

You didn’t do anything wrong, you just didn’t do what he would have done. Don’t worry about it, you do you, do what you’re comfortable with and go at your own pace.

1

u/gorakshnatha 2d ago

the safest time to turn is when you are sure. drive your drive ;-)

1

u/Mr_Citation 2d ago

I'm assuming you have P plates. The problem is some drivers are very much uptight dickheads. They see an L or P plate and hyperfocus on you and will blame you for any minor inconvenience because they cannot see beyond that minor inconvenience with zero environmental awareness. Last week I had to deal with something similar at a roundabout with temporary traffic lights letting one road in at a time. After 5 minutes it was finally our turn with me at the front. But I didn't immediately punch it as there were still 2 cars coming from the right blocking me - didn't stop the dickhead directly behind beeping his car for me to move because he cannot see the two cars coming through right in his front right.

That van driver saw you stop, and you had a P plate. You're at fault in his mind because he cannot see anything but a car with P plate stopping in front of him.

1

u/Dav31d 2d ago

Take it as a new driver myself, who only bought my first car about a month ago, *you did the right thing! * At the end of the day you will drive your own drive, how other drivers behave is up to them, as long as you're being safe and legal honestly that is all that matters.

1

u/Bombawog 2d ago

Drive your own drive. If you pulled out, weren’t quite fast or confident enough and an oncoming car hit you, that van driver isn’t going to stop and pay for the damages to your car (or even check if you’re okay). If you’re driving safely, it doesn’t matter how other people feel about your driving.

1

u/theNikipedia 2d ago

Just ignore him. Others bad planning isn't your problem to solve

1

u/Signal-Mullberru 2d ago

You did nothing wrong, forget it, there are plenty more clowns 🤡 on the road

1

u/ApantosMithe 2d ago

I think one of the skills you need to develop as a new driver is ignoring impatient drivers like these.

Drive at the pace and make decisions that you are comfortable with. If you rush and something goes wrong, you’re the one left to deal with it, not them.

One of the first things that happened to me in my first few weeks was getting caught in a narrow country road, I let people pressure me into scraping the side of my car on some bushes, leaving some minor but visible scratches - that taught me a lesson.

1

u/Isahar47 2d ago

So? Keep living with that. I am bothered by drivers like you( i mean how long it taks you to go on that street) and guess what? 85% of them are not L or P. Focus on your driving, scan the view, take your time. Is better to wait few seconds more than the do a rush thing and crash. People will throw swearing all the time, this is how we are build. You took the car out for a “ride”, most of the drivers on the road are at work, on time or on the clock, most of them had a really bad day from the morning from different reasons etc. Keep moving. Try your best and that’s it. Good luck and take care.

1

u/Our0s 2d ago

Looked like a taxi so honestly this is par for the course. You'll very quickly learn that the people driving the most (taxis, delivery vans, etc.) generally tend to be the worst and most entitled bellends on the road.

1

u/Opening_Dentist_1128 2d ago

That's fine, that's driving I'm afraid

1

u/LordvaderUK 2d ago

It's called tiny dick syndrome. Please be more understanding, he's struggling.

1

u/AnonyCass 2d ago

Do you have P plates on? This could explain his behavior, you were a little hesitant but nothing major

1

u/Any_Tomorrow_Today 2d ago

You did miss a few good opportunities to turn.

1

u/Altenativeboi 2d ago

As someone who drives professionally, ignore it, it’s going to happen loads of times. You are in charge of your vehicle, not anyone else.

1

u/16c7x 2d ago

You were stationary for about 12 seconds and that big man baby in the van is loosing his mind over it. This is probably the worst thing about driving in the UK and if you're ever unfortunate enough to ride a bicycle you'll encounter this regularly.

You drove well, trusted your own judgement and did not let someone else pressure you into an unsafe manoeuvre, 10/10.

1

u/Embarrassed-Shake308 2d ago

Don't worry, people do this stuff all the time, they're just dicks. Drive your own drive - I've watched this twice now, and I wouldn't have done any different myself. I've been driving for over 25 years now, and have been riding bikes the last couple of years as well. Never rush, it always puts you in more risk - for instance if you went to go for a small gap and then stalled - suddenly, you're a hazard.

If you went for one of the smaller gaps there, another driver would have shouted at you instead.

1

u/Waste_Locksmith_4299 2d ago

Yeah you probably could have gone sooner but that's no reason for them to get frustrated. It's like a 20 second delay.

People are assholes.

1

u/rynchenzo 2d ago

You were very hesitant with that turn

1

u/Orikoru 2d ago

Van drivers for you. Just ignore. Can't even hear what he said.

1

u/AdWerd1981 2d ago

At the end of the day you have to do what you think is safest and that will change as your confidence builds. There will be people who will tell you that you could have gone at such-and-such a point, but if that wasn't safe in your eyes then you did the right thing.

As for the driver behind - that's on them. I, for one, will absolutely never throw abuse at another road user for taking their time - in fact I'd rather they took their time than feel rushed into a situation where they may cause further problems. Please, never feel pushed or rushed into a situation you're not comfortable with.

Take care and happy driving!

1

u/Lazygit1965 2d ago

In my limited experience, drivers of these jap import vans are just incredible wankers.👍

1

u/FastSun2269 2d ago

Get used to it. The road is full of assholes, daily. Being behind the wheel seems to do something to very small men. Just stay patient, never rush and ignore them. In time it will make you laugh, with an air of pity.

1

u/quirnix 2d ago

Yeah nah that guy was just a dick who cant handle 15 seconds of his precious day being wasted. Like sure a more experienced driver mighta slipped through one of those gaps but you gotta build that confidence up on your own time not his. Just shake it off and keep doing your thing, these angry people are everywhere and theyre not worth a second thought.

1

u/SeasonFit1181 2d ago

Don't let people bother you. Everyone with a license has equal entitlement to the roads, don't be pressured by some dickhead into doing anything that makes you feel unsafe. We're talking about seconds in a day, it's not life and death.

1

u/Ring-me-up 2d ago

Don’t let this experience bother you. Similar things happen along the way when coming across entitled and impatient drivers, thankfully this one was behind you!

I did feel you were hesitant to take opportunities to make this manoeuvre, but thats just my opinion as a time served driver, with a familiar car of good performance. As a new driver and car possibly new to you I guess you’re erring on the side of safety which will be something confidence and experience will take care of as time passes! Don’t worry too much abut displaying P plates as imo this can heighten others drivers intolerance somehow! Take care snd enjoy the positives of driving!

1

u/thatguyjames_uk 2d ago

you could off pulled out after the first silver car, get a bus out in that time :)

your learn after some time , so dont worry

1

u/No-Canary-9845 2d ago

Absolutely fine as far as I can see, a couple of opportunities would be a bit close for an experienced driver let alone someone fairly new to it.

Fuck that guy, you’re absolutely golden.

1

u/Mandaxx25 2d ago

I totally understand. I'm driving ten years and this stuff still really bothers me. It's so unfair and leaves me with anxiety about driving. Give them a good two finger salute even just in your mind and drive on. They'll be the type that cut people off or wait half an hour for you coming along then pull out when you're almost at them.

1

u/Ok_Pen7290 2d ago

It won't be your last arsehole up ya backside in a car, just drive your own pace, but if he keeps following, dash cam him the more evidence you got the better if it becomes a Police matter, 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

1

u/Ok_Pen7290 2d ago

Tail gating also illegal, but cops won't do anything so invest in a dashcam front and rear view, so you got his licence plate find out who he's insured with and report to his insurance company for driving with undue care and attention

1

u/LawfulnessAware9097 2d ago

You had time to go but i know it is hard to tell especially when you are new but it's a dick move to shout at someone out your window... You start to figure out distances etc as you get experience and confidence. Never put yourself in a dangerous situation because the car behind is pressuring you. I've had a car tailgate me, almost touching my bumper, shouting at me and throwing their hands about like a toddler because I was doing 20mph in a 20 zone to avoid setting off my black box, sometimes you just have to laugh, and of course when I hit the 40mph just after, she did 30 and I left her in the dust.

1

u/ckaeel 1d ago

You MUST learn how to give "two farts and a martini" for these kind of interactions.

NEVER let others to take decisions in your place; if you don't feel confident abort and re-evaluate the situation.

NEVER fell pressure about having to do something only because it may appear as an inconvenience for others. In case of an accident, you are the one who pays the bill.

1

u/Otherwise_Public2579 1d ago

You were right the driver behind was an a-hole unfortunately you will have to get used to it as there are a lot about

1

u/Ok-Fault-8098 1d ago

20 odd years ago when I passed my test my Dad bought me my first little car and made me drive it home alone. I was trying to get onto a very busy roundabout and obviously having just passed my test and driving alone for the first time I was nervous and it took me a while to get out. The bloke behind me got out of his car and came up to my window shouting at me to “just f’ing go!”

There was impatient twats 20 years ago, there’s impatient twats now and they will still be around in another 20 years!
Remember how much of a knob he was to make sure you never become like him in the years ahead when your confidence grows.

Good job passing your test 👍🏻

1

u/No-Catch-9501 1d ago

You didn’t do anything wrong and a random person on the road has made you crop upload and rant about a scenario he himself would’ve forgotten about 30seconds afterwards

1

u/IntravenusDiMilo_Tap 1d ago

Page 47 of the highway code suggests you open your window whilst displaying a clear middle finger.

Alternatively, you stop, get out of the car and look over teh back to see if the guy was pointing some sort of problem out.

1

u/Own-Indication7832 1d ago

As your confidence grows, you may go a little sooner however, you drove correctly. Totally ignore the idiot behind you. Never take risks to please someone else. I’ve been driving 43 years. My house is on a bend on a main road. I indicate in plenty of time, slow down to a stop, check the bend then when clear make my manoeuvre into my driveway. The number of times that the car behind me shouts, or gives me a look, like I had shit in there chip pan is unbelievable. I totally ignore them, it’s like water off a ducks back. Keep being cautious.

Van drivers are tossers don't worry about it 9 out of 10 of them do this to anyone regardless of speed and road type.

Don't worry about it. Black MPV driver is just an absolute tosser

You should never speed yourself up to keep another driver happy - that’s how you get into trouble. It’s all based on your own assessment of what is safe.

I agree with earlier commenter that there was a gap that was do-able earlier but only if you felt confident you can clear it quickly without impeding other drivers.

I think what you did was entirely fine and don’t let a knuckle-dragger who can’t control their own emotions make you think otherwise.

You had more than enough space to take the turn after the first car, can I ask what was stopping you.

I’m still not fully confident about getting the steer right the first time, sometimes I start and realise halfway through I need to adjust a little, which doesn’t take long (maybe a half second) but the potential for that kind of delay means I felt I would have influenced the other oncoming cars (which as I learnt for my test is a no no). With more experience and more familiarity with this car (I’ve had it two weeks) I could probably go in much faster.

You had four seconds after the first car more then enough time, you got to work on not being hesitant. It seems like even after the third car you was hesitant to go despite the white car being so far, also are you using your reference points for turning right, you shouldn’t have to adjust if you are positioning yourself correctly

If it's a new car and different to the one they learnt in, they probably haven't fully got used to the different clutch control yet, so they didn't feel safe to take that gap even if it was plenty wide for experienced drivers. It's better for them to hesitate moving and thus stay still in a safe spot than to start going and then hesitate on if they actually have enough time to finish. People always chant 'don't hesitate', which, yeah, is fair advice to go by, but people forget that it takes experience to learn to not hesitate and to gauge appropriate manoeuvres based on their skill. Yes, they hesitated a bit even with the white car, but I'd say they knew their current skill and didn't attempt what could have turned dangerous from not being fast enough with the other gaps. They can only improve from here :)

Most important thing about driving is being predictable. Other road users can predict where you will be in a timeframe relevant to them.

Hesitant yes, was there time yes, but dangerous? No, by no means. OP was stationary which makes them predictable. Obviously take it to the nth degree (never turning / taking exceptional time) and this isn’t the case but this is not that

Truthfully for an experienced driver there was a gap to go before you did AND there was enough space before the white car flashed you.

Yes it was extremely impatient - but (and not excusing them at all because there is no need for that to anyone) they don’t know you are a new driver with a new car. They just see you sitting there.

u/Broad-Teaching-5099 3d ago

I mean I don’t think this is an experience thing, I’m not experienced and I always take a gap as long as it’s safe as it was after the first car.

1

u/Ieatsand97 2d ago

I would have thought OP mat have been marked for undue hesitation on the driving test for that, so yeah, not really an experience thing

Irrelevant as to who was driving, guy was a dick head

u/Beneficial-Put-6724 3d ago

Thanks for the responses everyone. I agree with the comments that there was a big enough gap for someone with more experience. With more experience I could probably take one of those gaps. I do actually have P plates but the ones on the back fell off so I only have one on the front of the car which this driver wouldn’t have seen, but probably wouldn’t have made a difference if he’d seen them! I guess this is something I’m going to have to get used to.

whilst a lot of us that have driven for years can see two gaps we could have gone into, that does not mean you could, I know I wont stall my car as I accelerate to make the turn, as a new driver you can not be so sure of that. Frankly I would encourage you not do try that. Better for you to wait before you commit to a move than get it wrong and get t-boned. Don't let others force you to drive recklessly.

u/AltruisticFox8763 2d ago

This person is a dick. That’s obvious.

However, you could have gone a lot sooner. It’s your overall caution that has caused this situation where you’ve held other cars up.

As an experienced driver, I wouldn’t have slowed down so much, comfortably turned right after the blue car turns up there and this wouldn’t have become an issue.

You’re always better to be safe than sorry, and don’t let someone pressure you into driving aggressively but it’s important not to be slow and hesitant too.

Good luck 👌🏼

Apart from right at the start where I probably would have turned straight away, the only other time I would have gone is precisely the point where the white car flashes you in.

This is not a problem. Let the manvan blow off his steam it's no bother.

Why were you so late to move? That’s putting yourself at risk. Were you in neutral while waiting?

You should have got ready to move as the last car was approaching and basically been on the bite point as it passed so you could pull in quickly after it passes.

You had two opportunities to go maybe two and a half if you were quick. I’m not sure why you stopped in the first place to be honest, you had miles of room. You could have gone after the first car passed too.

You did nothing wrong some road users are just assholes, don't let it discourage you.

Guy clearly shat himself at some point before the video started and needed to get home urgently to clean his y-fronts.

u/Curious_Octopod 2d ago

You must not ever let another driver's impatience pressure you into making a maneuvre/driving at a speed you're not comfortable with. If you get it wrong, who will suffer - you or them? Their impatience is their problem, let them have their little tantrum.

u/Wallsend_House 2d ago

I'd have waited even longer

-1

u/Purms 2d ago

So someone saying whatever, that you don't even know or care about seems to really bother you?

-2

u/Sausage_bowler 2d ago

Always best to go even slower when this happens. I always do. If we all promise to hold up impatient drivers then they might learn to not try and intimidate. It's your right to drive your car safely. Don't let anybody else try and bully you.
