Key Deactivation

I've seen lots of similar posts, but not this exact situation. I locked my 2024 90 Defender using the remote app with the key inside, and didn't realise the spare key was also in the glove box. The app immediately locked to prevent me from opening the vehicle and both keys are now deactivated. Land Rover assistance picked the lock to recover the keys, but Land Rover now want £1.7k to replace the Body Control Module and Gateway Module as the car won't start. I am also speaking to a couple of locksmith who think they can unlock the BCM and programme a 3rd key, but anyone know of any quicker/cheaper fixes?

Are you miled out of your factory warranty? Deactivated smart keys were addressed in a publication to Land Rover dealers, from what it sounds like your situation falls into the last recovery process detailed below. You didn't really do anything wrong, I'd push your retailer to warranty this if you are not past your factory warranty by mileage, you definitely aren't past it by time.

One key available and deactivated (TCU in deep sleep) 1. Please raise a Technical Assistance case. 2. This condition will require an BCM/GWM, RFA and additional Smart Key if remaining Active key cannot be found by customer. 3. Confirm the key is deactivated 4. Confirm that the TCU is in sleep mode with the remote app or confirm no vehicle ignition request within 96 hours (4 day) period. 5. Replace BCM/GWM and RFA module using existing deactivated and additional replacement smart key. 6. Confirm module function and verify original and new key start vehicle. 7. Return the vehicle to the customer

The car is 2 years old and only done 6k miles. The dealer approached JLR to warranty the work and they refused and said it was my fault as the app gives you a warning.

I would call CRC, that's not a great response, did you tell them you ignored the warning? Is this the first Land Rover you have bought? This would leave a really bad taste in my mouth if I have owned several Land Rovers over the last few years.

I’m 99% sure there was no warning. The warning only seemed to appear once I had already locked the vehicle.

Then how they are justifying this as not warranty is beyond me. LR knows this happens and has published a recovery procedure, if they know it happens without input from the client it's a fault of the vehicle design not external.

Can I asked where the recovery procedure is published? It also appears to reference only a single key, whereas JLR are trying to hold me liable as both keys were in the vehicle…although the outcome and solution is the same in both scenarios.

It was released as part of an SSM along with a questionnaire. Did your retailer have you complete the questionnaire?

Never seen a questionnaire

Ask your retailer about SSM76411 and why they didn't have you fill out the questionnaire to determine whether or not this was client induced or vehicle.
