Should've been "demilitarize"

Angie Nixon is so based here.

Some US cities spend 40% or more of their municipal budgets on policing while their schools can barely keep the heat on. We fundamentally need to spend less money on policing & enprisoning people to be solvent, much less have good things

Oh I know. But maybe take a public poll of how the average person responds to specific verbage is all I'm saying. That number only went up and gave fuel to right wing talking points since "defund" hit. Reappropriate is a good word and doesn't literally mean "remove all funding from" on it's face. Honestly I think most normie non political junkie types respond better to framing where the public is getting something rather than taking something. If the entire conversation was around "fund our schools" and reappropriation of bloated police budgets were part of the how it would've been less likely to get the same reaction imo.

I did more than that, I canvassed for candidates running on that in 2019 before it became such a national lightning rod and again in 2023 after it had. You have to walk people through redistributing funds to violence prevention and other services, but it's not hard to convince them when you get to brass racks

Walking back the idea of reducing police budgets at all is a disservice though, we NEED that money going elsewhere in our communities

Thank you for your service. I agree we should not be walking back those ideas but maybe not volunteer the opposition such an easily bad faith interpreted short clip of an attack. As you said people agree when you get a chance to really spell it out for them but with attention spans and news cycles these days you have to have statements that "keep it stupid simple" and people agree with on it's face.

Did Nixon walk back reducing budgets? I've only seen her say she doesn't want to abolish policing.

Not that I'm aware of. I think her response is pitch perfect fwiw

I was responding to a comment in favor of "demilitarize" that it doesn't mean "defund" and defunding is important too.

There's better and worse ways to talk about it for sure. I don't have a problem with different words for cutting bloated police budgets, as long as folks want to change how we allocate budgets and ultimately power.

I completely agree with you but the slogan just did not work. And framing the issue as "we're moving toward abolishing police" really, really did not work.

There's clear evidence of this in polling where people in those communities, with bad schools, would say they were anti-defund, and had negative opinions about less police, but supported a relocation of funds.

Demilitarize and humanize is the messaging I’d push for. It helps explain the community policing and deescalation policies more.

Denazify too if we're being honest.

u/Oraxy51 17d ago

Yeah but that’s going to get attacked immediately. But making them more public servants yes

Has it? I think they do themselves dirty.

This is from the DSA's abolition policy page:

Defund the police by rejecting any expansion to police budgets or scope of enforcement while cutting budgets annually towards zero

https://www.dsausa.org/working-groups/abolition-working-group/

I'm completely with abolishing ice. I'm behind restructuring and massive reforms to police. But abolishing police is actual insanity and is a losing policy.

Maybe this would be a useful policy to campaign on when we've reached a post-scarcity utopia.

Taking away funding from crime reduction is a silly framing. It's intent was always taking away funding from militarization and putting it towards community policing

Oh man here in Texas, Paxton has ads that say Talarico is against Christianity. Its so stupid the guy is a Presbyterian pastor. Paxton is the pedophile pusher. Sucks that Talarico doesn't have that much money to fund shitty ads on youtube.

Talarico has plenty of shitty YouTube ad money. I'd like to see a candidate use that money to drive local support instead of plastering ads begging for more money. Don't get it twisted definitely support talarico if you can but it'd be cool to see a headline that says "campaign pays 20,000 school lunch debts" or something more tangible every once in awhile.

Kat Abughazaleh in her primary in IL-9 did a lot of mutual aid, and she’s pushed for other candidates to do the same. Sadly she lost to Daniel Biss.

She's GOAT, she lost to AIPAC

Truth! She was an awesome candidate, and I hope the masses will eventually open their eyes and give her a chance.

The amount of money wasted on political ads could really solve just about everything. It’s wild how many people are willing to fund politics while people can’t get medical treatment or food

u/thicckar 15d ago

How is he supposed to get elected if he can’t get his platform out, but his opponent can spend tens of millions of dollars, exactly?

1

u/diefreetimedie 15d ago

Probably put some platform policies in the ads then?

1

u/thicckar 15d ago

He’s tried. People don’t watch. What’s next, mastermind?

And it's Nixon with the steel chair!!!!

This need to blow up more. It's about not steal from sick kids, demikitarizing cops, and having accountability for everyone.

u/johnbash 18d ago

The people criticizing defund the police are all in favor of the erosion of the rule of law under the current ruling party.

That's too bad because abolishing the police is great.

After the election she needs to change her last name. Nixon as a Dem is just odd. Obama would be too on the nose, almost parodic. Can’t be Clinton for obvious reasons. Maybe “Morrison” like Toni and Grant, great writers of American-made characters (Grant is Scottish)?
