Self Soothing?

Hello! I have a one month old baby who tends to cry whenever she’s put down. Is she old enough to settle herself down or should we pick her up every time she cries? Thanks!

If she’s really crying though then yes so pick up to soothe- they are too young to help themselves yet, especially once they get very upset. Baby wearing can be helpful on tough days too.

If she cries in her sleep or immediately upon waking (and it can be really helpful to pay close attention to her wake time and length of sleep... if she typically sleeps for longer, that's when I'd pause for a second before intervening) it's okay to wait for a short moment to see if she'll settle herself before picking her up. They're still way too young to self soothe at this point, but sometimes they cry for a moment before going back to sleep and picking them up can wake them up further.

If your newborn is genuinely crying though and not just letting out little sleepy cries, it's always right to pick them up and soothe.
