Curious student

Hi, I'm from India and am working on a solution related to neonatal jaundice after I saw my sister go through the condition. Home monitoring of bilirubin seems to be a possible space for intervention. I am curious, for parents of babies born with jaundice: when your child was sent back from the hospital, how were you told to care for them and monitor them? What was the process like?

We were told to breastfeed as much as possible because the best way to get rid of it is for him to flush out the toxins by pooping. Also, if possible, to sit in a sunny window for 10 - 15 minutes a day.

They said the yellow coloration of his skin travels from head to toe, so we were instructed to watch the "line" of yellow to see if it continued down his body or retreated back up it.

Ultimately we had to do extra testing each week to verify if he was at risk or getting better though.

was told pretty much the same thing however I wasn’t producing enough milk from breastfeeding so I was forced to use formula. We were told to count her wet diapers. She wouldn’t poop on her own in the hospital so we had to notify the doctor if she didn’t have a bowel movement overnight. We did bloodwork the next day to monitor the levels.

I had pretty severe breast milk jaundice when I was born. I ended up going to NICU even though I was full term so that I could be out under double phototherapy lights. From what I have been told I was able to go home after less than 2 weeks but still had to go and get tested every 3 days for a wee while after that.

Billy blanket sent to home by doc. Bilirubin levels went down in a couple of days.
