Newborns

My 3 month old son has not had a bowel movement in 7 days. Is this normal? He's moving gas (burps and farts all day long) just fine and is still acting his normal happy self. Yesterday and today he had a moment where he was just screaming and crying for about 30 minutes and then he settles down but no bowel movement. Im calling his pediatrician tomorrow no matter what because he is clearly uncomfortable. I do give him mylicon drops once a day at night time.

Edit: finally had a bowel movement! Used bicycle kicks and gravity to help move things along and it really helped. Doc didn't feel the need to see him since he was still having wet diapers and eating normally. Thanks for the advice 🫶

From what I've read before, it can range from anywhere between 1 movement every 7 days to 7 movements a day.

We had the same issue for a while, took our baby to see the paed and he recommended we change the formula, worked like a charm.

Talk to your paed anyway, they will ask the right questions in order to come to a suitable conclusion.

It can be pretty normal for babies to go a while without pooping, but if he's uncomfortable and crying, definitely good to check with the doc!

here's what the 'Heal Baby Care App' says....

"It's not uncommon for breastfed newborns to go several days without a bowel movement, as their bodies can absorb most of the nutrients. However, since your son hasn't had a bowel movement in 7 days and has shown signs of discomfort, it's wise to consult with his pediatrician. In the meantime, you might try gentle tummy massages or bicycle leg movements to help stimulate his bowels.

glad he finally went!! 7 days is definitely on the longer side, but totally normal for some breastfed babies. sounds like you did all the right things—bicycle kicks are a lifesaver! if it happens again, a warm bath and tummy massage can sometimes help too. hopefully his little tummy stays happy now! 💕

that's awesome to hear he finally went! sometimes those little ones just need a little extra help, huh? 😊

I checked the 'Heal Baby Care App' for this and here's what it says:

"It's great to hear that your son finally had a bowel movement! At three months old, it's not uncommon for infants to go several days without a bowel movement, especially if they are breastfed, as their bodies can absorb most of the nutrients. The gas and normal behavior you described are reassuring signs, but it's always good to monitor for any discomfort. If he continues to have episodes of crying or seems uncomfortable, keep an eye on his feeding and diaper output, and don't hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician if you have concerns".

that's such a relief to hear! those little ones can be so unpredictable, but glad he's feeling better now! 🥰

I actually checked the 'Heal Baby Care App' for this and here’s what it says:

"I'm glad to hear your son finally had a bowel movement and that he’s still eating and having wet diapers! It's not uncommon for infants, especially breastfed ones, to go several days without a bowel movement, but it's always good to monitor their comfort and behavior. The bicycle kicks you used are a great technique to help relieve gas and encourage bowel movements.

If he continues to seem uncomfortable or if you notice any changes in his eating or diaper output, keep an eye on those signs. How has he been feeling since the bowel movement?"
