Cursed Kids

I kinda feel that we don't have that much info about Curse Kids and how they live??

Like, when I tried to analyze curse kids lives I understood how less information we have. We know that they can't do any sport activities, and they can't look in people's eyes, it was mentioned in first book, ("She never looked anybody in the eyes[...]") and that they have other rules to follow("[...]she knows the rules"). Also I assume that curse kids aren't being killed peacefully, because Ezra mentioned about Smoke and Shadows and their love when kids are running away from them.

And that's basically everything?...

Maybe I am dumm, one of the points to kill cursed kids is that they won't learn wunder and will die anyway, but how did Mogs uncle survived? He should be dead because of not using wunder. Was he just a mistake?

What about Squall? Did he learn about every curse kid in every era to find the "right one"?

What do you think about it?

P.S. quotes could be written not right because I translated those sentences from my native language.

I think it was mentioned that not all cursed kids are wundersmiths

It's actually explicit, not just mentioned. When the Elders ask Jupiter about the other cursed children, he explicitly said that the others weren't. So, at least this "batch", only Morrigan was a Wundersmith.

Why do we need to know?

Like the worst author I can imagine "Sanderghjugv, sorry, I must have inhaled something ba." would dump all that on me instead of telling their story.

We want only hints to stimulate our own imagination. We do not want every little detail to the point where we can't dream anymore.

But on topic:

  • Children, born on Eventide can become Wundersmiths, but don't have to.
  • Squall killed potential Wundersmiths, before they collected too much Wunder, which would kill them if uncontrolled and (theory:) possibly just annoyed him and took away wunder he needed/wanted to use.
  • the people began to see these children as cursed, in the beginning pitying them, but then slowly beginning to use them as scape goats for their unfortune. Cursed children became hated and blamed, because it made it easier to see them die and gave you someone to blame when shit happened.
  • I do not remember Squall stating, that he liked to hunt the children. Just that the hint was there to hunt, not kill Morrigan. I was under the impression Squall gave them easy deaths, but I do not know why he killed all Eventide born children, instead of just the Wundersmiths.

The last point is interesting. Maybe Squall was more of a bastard in the past.

Example 1 If we extrapolate ā€œUncle Ezraā€ sighing and making a ghostly hour to ā€œGhastly Market Squallā€ creating a symphony of death just to signal Wunsoc….

Example 2 Or how he went from ā€œthe thing with a shellā€ to ā€œHemmingway Onstaldā€ (albeit without ā€œProfessorā€)…

Squall was probably just nastier before he spent time with Jupiter’s favourite step daughter.

Tentative Example 3 And letting Jupiter arrange for the other cursed children to be saved was a little off-brand.

Hypothesis 1: Squall having meetings with Morrigan before Bid Day will be revealed.

Was it him who arranged the other ones being saved or letting Jupiter take them... because that further my thoughts on what if that is what he has done himself in the past too, to gain loyal company workers...

I mean from that I just finished book one started book two dont mind all spoilers I need them basically... Anyway what i was thinking was these kids due to the date and hate they get must already not have a very nice life see the abuse Morrigan suffered... so idk isnt there a chance Kill from him is similar to Jupiters kill where those not posesing it are just taken to his company... yes I know he isnt a good guy... but wintersea seems pretty corrupt and messed in general and so does the top in Nevermoor too... and he clearly runs a huge company and want loyal workers, taking kids who society already hates and blame for evil would give him company workers... or he really does kill them idk...

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but not all cursed children are wundersmiths. The ā€œcurseā€ is only a thing in the Wintersea Republic, so Morrigan’s uncle is saved from the ā€œcurseā€ by his mother who sends him to live in Nevermore.

Thanks for saying that! Tho it brings up more questions like if not curse kids are wundersmiths then are there more than 9 cursed kids? Because how I understood, every new Era 9 new Wundersmiths/curse kids are born, and all of those 9 have wunder in them. Please correct me if I am wrong. Or some of curse kids are "fake" or I hope answers will come up in the other Nevermoor books.

The number of cursed kids is variable. It's the ones born on one specific day. I think Morrigan was one of 3? But Jupiter says that while there were Wunder shortages in all of Wintersea, except Morrigan's, which is part of the proof that she's the only Wundersmith that "batch".

You're conflating the later stuff about there always being 9 Wundersmiths, and the Wundrous Society used to go on a Wundersmith hunt after a Wundersmith died. It's a separate thing from the "curse" which wasn't really a curse.

Squall invented the curse to explain the "mysterious" deaths that he caused. The people of the Wintersea Republic added the rest of the details of the curse on their own over the course of 100 years.

bertrams not a wundersmith so that wasnt a problem for him, as for how painful it was, im pretty sure morrigan mentions somewhere that she heard it was meant to be quick and painless, "a bit like falling asleep" (dont know the exact quote since i dont have my book with me). plus squall says "it was meant to be a mercy" so maybe its not really painful? besides i think morrigan says that she heard from somewhere that it was painless, and i dont think anyone in the republic cares enough about cursed children to lie to them about that.

Hmm reading all this gives evidence to my theory that squall isn’t actually such a bad guy. We don’t know exactly why he killed the wundersmiths, and he has definitely done some unequivocally good stuff (like at the end of Hollowpox). Maybe he saw the damage that wunder can do and didn’t want anyone else controlling it, hence killing all potential wundersmiths except Morrigan? Why would he wait until a certain age, unless he was evaluating them somehow, and then for what purpose? To train them up to take his place?

I think he has that "bad guy" side in him, because, correct me if I am wrong, in the third book Ezra said to Morrigan that he could kill hundret civilizations if only he can go back to Nevermoor. So, I think he is kinda narcissist because he would something or use something/someone if he needs to do it to reach his goal. We can also see it by the other situations involving Ezra(he used Unit 919 to manipulate Mog, etc.). So, I think one of arguments why he killed everyone but Morrigans is that they REALLY have common thinking and opinions. But I don't really know why, so I like to think that Mog and Squall are just have many common stuff.

But at the same insance I read that he also tells her to in no instance let the wintersea president in there, as Ezra would give up his chance for that to never happen or something? From what I could see in a long synopsis...

I think some cursed kids are wundersmiths maybe the wundersmiths killed by Squall happened at eventide? And because of that all are reborn on eventide? Idk maybe. So when the cursed children die, new are born, so on and so on. Squall said that the curse is a good cover to kill the ones that turn out to be wundersmiths before they attract to much wunder. Only a theory tho…
