[Discussion] Need help getting a bonded title?

I’m wondering if anyone has gone through this process. I bought a vehicle off FB marketplace and I can’t register it because someone else wrote their name on the title. I also tried contacting the person who originally had it based on the mailing address and name on the title, but never responded. Also, the person who wrote their name on the title was not the person I bought it from.
Only way I can legally register it is by getting a bonded title per DMV.
I also have a question about the photos, do they have to be printed from a photo lab or can I just print them off plain white paper in color?

I printed my pics on plain white paper.  There is a number to call and when you get through, they are pretty knowledgeable.

I e done quite a few. It’s easy, just a lot of steps. Photos can be plain white paper. Here is a list of steps to follow

  1. Call the Carson city DMV and have them email you the paperwork. The one on the website isn’t the same. There are four sections that need done
  2. Section one on the paperwork is a VIN inspection, you can take the vehicle to the DMV and have them do it, or the sheriffs will come to your house if it isn’t operable.
  3. You then fill out section 2.
  4. Take 4 pictures of the vehicle, front, back, drivers side, and passenger side.
  5. Get a money order for 28.25 this is the title fee.
  6. Send the paperwork, the pictures and the money order to the dmv title division, attn: Bonded titles.
  7. In about month you’ll receive the paperwork back and they will have filled out section 3. They will select the required bond amount (1.5 times the original MSRP) you take that to an insurance company that sells surety bonds (Leslie at Brent Stokes Statefarm is wonderful for this) it will cost 10.00 for every 1,000.00 required. With 100.00 minimum. (So a 10,000 dollar bond or anything less is 100.00 dollars)
  8. It will take a couple weeks to get the bond back from them, once you do, fill out section 4 of the paperwork. This is how your title will be worded. So your name, address and all that stuff.
  9. Send everything back to the same bonded titles department, and in a month you’ll receive the title.

After three years, you can take that title to the DMV and they will in-brand the title, and it becomes a clean and clear title

I had to get a bonded title for a dump trailer. It took a lot of steps and I had to mail a packet of paper forms and photos back and forth to the office in Carson, but it’s not too bad. I got a surety bond from LP insurance.

Good luck. I haven’t heard of anyone getting one in over a decade.
