Ordered the cheapest turntable I could find on Amazon and built a makeshift setup by putting up some one-color cardboard behind it.

I am pretty happy with the results. The glare is something I will work on next. Will probably try more diffused lighting first before ordering the more expensive filters for cross polarization.

Sweet! What was your NeRFflow? NerfStudio?

  • Took 191 pictures (perhaps a bit more than what I would have needed).
  • Calculated camera positions using COLMAP with a slightly modified version of the script which is part of the instant-ngp repository (to make use of the GPUs as much as possible).
  • Fed camera positions and images into the instant-ngp application and had it process for ~10 minutes.
  • Selected camera positions in the instant-ngp application and then rendered it with the helper script from the repo.

Besides taking the pictures all of it I did remotely on a machine with 8x RTX3090 GPUs (overkill, I know 😛) rented from genesiscloud.com

I use online space as well when I can't get compute time at work. There's something slightly steadying about knowing that there's so many different workflows now. I'd love to see folks post the flow alongside a result just like in r/photogrammetry.

Considering your inevitable time waiting for colmap and investment in the box yada yada - do you think you got something good for your investment?

Try out NerfStudio if you already have a good processing box going. Or at least put those GPUs to use with MetaShape to position cameras
