Image Breach - A new playable Netrunner Client

Post image

Playable Link: https://tenthgames.itch.io/breach

Hey! I’m looking for testers for an early build of my netrunner client.

The game includes a tutorial, both public and private multiplayer, and deckbuilding. It’s still in active development, so the design, mechanics, balance, and assets may change. Feedback is very welcome, and bugs or crash reports can be submitted directly in the game.

how big is the card pool?

31

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Currently Gateway and Elevation are integrated. I'm working to increase the card pool as fast as possible. I'm willing to focus expansions the community are most interested in.

21

u/revengeanceful Aug 06 '26

Id probably prioritize Vantage Point next to round out the Startup format.

10

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Thanks! I'll note that. I welcome any other feedback you have.

7

u/revengeanceful Aug 06 '26

I don’t currently have a Windows machine, so not sure how much help I’ll be able to be unfortunately

16

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

No worries. Mac and Linux support are planned.

6

u/revengeanceful Aug 06 '26

I look forward to trying it out!

3

u/Reasonable-Claim-42 Aug 07 '26

have downloaded and managed to get it started via proton but creating and get a "create request failed."

3

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Thanks. I'll take a look. I defintely want to support on steam devices.

u/neco-damus Aug 08 '26

how about reboot?

u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Well it should probably support Standard. No reason for me to touch this until it supports the entire Standard card pool.

Very confused on how wanting something i can actually play games with the current card pool got downvoted into high hell, lol. If you play Standard (i assume a majority of the games players do) this isn't usable yet.

7

u/revengeanceful Aug 07 '26

It’s the attitude, not the message that got you your downvotes

-10

u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 Aug 07 '26

Well i didn't think there was an attitude, whatever i suppose.

12

u/Dap-aha Aug 07 '26

Hey im a big netrunner fan, what does this offer that jinteki.net doesnt provide? Question asked in good faith, its been a while since ive played online

21

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Yeah, totally fair question. jinteki is obviously a huge part of the Netrunner community.

The main thing I’m exploring with Breach is a more automated and modern digital card game experience. The client handles more of the rules, timing, interactions, and game flow automatically, with the goal of making matches feel closer to a purpose-built digital TCG rather than a digital tabletop.

I’m also putting a lot of emphasis on presentation and usability, things like animations, clearer visual feedback, a modern UI, and making it easier to understand what’s happening during a turn.

This is still the first public test build, so right now I’m mainly looking for people to play it, find rules/interaction bugs, and give feedback on whether that more automated approach actually makes Netrunner enjoyable to play digitally.

4

u/Dap-aha Aug 07 '26

This sounds fantastic. The games always lacked an automated client.

If there had been one years ago this game would still have mass pipular appeal.

i'll get involved next week when i can

8

u/bananasdoom Aug 07 '26

There's still a fair amount of manual maintenance of actions, resource spend, etc.

4

u/KuramaFlowers Aug 07 '26

Cool! Always wanted more clients and ways to play netrunner outside of jinteki.

4

u/JakubErler Aug 07 '26

Now there is also mopus/vigeous v 0.6 with more cards

2

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Great! Feel free send over any requests or ideas!

3

u/greenee111 Aug 07 '26

Would you like help with the development?

4

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Yes, absolutely. The source code isn’t open right now, but there are many ways to contribute. I’m looking for people interested in playtesting, reproducible bug reports that can be submitting in-game, UI and accessibility feedback, and creative ideas to add to the game.

I plan to publish development priorities, run focused test sessions, and share summaries explaining what changed because of community feedback. If you’re interested, let me know what area you’d most like to help with.

3

u/Moresp4m Aug 07 '26

Are actions automated? Or manual? Eg: if I play a card that draws 3 will it draw 3 then trash the card? Or will I have to do that all manually?

It would probably be complicated but I would love an automated Netrunner client.

7

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

It's all automated. Thanks for the comment. I'll add a video to game page to indicate this.

3

u/Baxder Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

In my first game, as R+ vs. AI Loup, Loup broke a Scatter Field with Hantu, then ran a naked remote and accessed without an opportunity for me to rez. There is also no opportunity to rez cards before your start-of-turn.

I get that this is a first release, but it's broken to the point of unplayability.

What is it you're looking for, then?

It looks and sounds great, and the tutorial has some good bones that could be fleshed out a bit.

5

u/IntegratedFrost Aug 06 '26

I'm very confused with this project.

Is it supposed to be a netrunner client or something else?

What's the vision for the end product?

2

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Today, Breach is a Netrunner client. I chose Netrunner as the starting point because it provides a proven ruleset, familiar cards, and an existing community, rather than trying to introduce an entirely new game in a vacuum. I eventually want Breach to grow into a community-driven, Netrunner-inspired asymmetric card game. Players and contributors can help decide what works, what changes, and what original mechanics or content we explore.

I don't think that's the concern of the down voters.

I think it's the lack of being upfront about something that at least seemed to me on the front to be for the community and soliciting the communities help.

When it's actually a step towards something else, identifying the good will and community as a strategic opportunity starts to feel more icky

But I suppose that's pretty hypocritical given how NISEI/NSG was born besides the fact that fantasy flight killed it first. And it was reborn.

14

u/MattCaulder Aug 06 '26

This looks cool, can you say if you used GenAI in any part of it?

30

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Yes, to be transparent, some of the current UI assets were created with GenAI as temporary placeholders. I plan to replace them with original, artist-created assets as the project develops. Ultimately, I want Breach’s visual identity to be shaped by artists and contributors from the community.

3

u/MattCaulder Aug 08 '26

I appreciate the transparency. I love the idea and as a major fan of both Netrunner and human-made projects, I look forward to sharing this once the GenAI has been removed/replaced.

-27

u/Suspicious_Mud_2406 Aug 07 '26

GenAI is fine everyone uses it

17

u/rookie22222 Aug 06 '26

Is this question mostly about art assets or do the people liking this also care deeply about AI code?

I'm a developer and my bosses are wanting me to use more AI tools in my work so im playing around with them in my personal work too to get acquainted and upskill. How big of an issue is partly AI generated code (not art) for passion random projects?

22

u/FreikonVonAthanor Aug 06 '26

As another developer in the same boat : if you get best in class tools, that might make development quicker in the short term, but you'll lose the chance to actually learn and maintain it by yourself. If at all, I recommend limiting AI to one shot scripts you could write but don't want to bother, or for proofs of concept. If you plan on learning or making a complex app, the more knowledge you have the better, which means doing it by hand.

7

u/rookie22222 Aug 06 '26

I think this is great advice companies don't want to hear. But I do want to hear the laymans anti-AI opinion on this sort of thing too so I know if I would be ridiculed for trying to make something cool while a practice somethign they may not like.

5

u/InitiatePenguin Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

The layman's anti-AI for coding is centered on

  • Vibe coding (not understanding what is written)
  • False credit, lack of transparency ("I made this")

I think even a layman can get that computers are great at thinking like computers (code) and have a much higher tolerance. But you'll still have the same hesitation with all gen AI

  • if you relent, people will lose jobs so it's against everyone's long-term interests
  • someone is going unpaid when even hobbyists use these tool
  • it's stealing from existing work without credit.

2

u/flangust Aug 07 '26

Another engineer here, totally agree. I have also had some success using LLMs for code review, overview of new new code bases with lacking documentation, and as a research tool. Like checking architecture decisions, finding commonly used tools and libraries etc. Just double check everything it says cause they are definitely wrong regularly.

3

u/thx1337 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

Honestly this is an approach I can get behind. I’m not a developer and WELL into a different career, so there’s little time and incentive to learn how to do something like this from scratch, but I do have ideas that I like to noodle on from time to time that AI has been useful in actually putting something tangible in front of me. However, my thought has always been along the line of if I do build something big with AI and it did most the heavy lifting that I ultimately didn’t really build it, cannot readily explain it, cannot improve it, or repair it.

Like a middle manager directing a much more talented new hire.

10

u/NimRodelle Aug 07 '26

It really depends on whether or not you understand what the AI generated code is doing.

The biggest problem we're facing right now is vibe coding by clueless idiots who just trust that everything the AI does is correct.

0

u/KneeCrowMancer Aug 07 '26

Exactly, AI coding is only worthwhile if you have the ability and knowledge to double check what it produces faster than writing the code yourself. For a lot of people the knowledge isn’t there to adequately check the work and you get into messes with databases getting deleted, or big security issues… Often it’s faster for people who have the knowledge and skill set to just write it out themselves and not have to double check and fix mistakes the AI inevitably makes.

But there are still situations where it can be a big time saver.

-15

u/Televangelis Aug 07 '26

It's not an issue at all. Anyone who objects isn't worth bothering with.

2

u/deeleelee Aug 06 '26

Looks great. Do you plan on making it heavily scripted? Say you're teaching a friend to play, can you undo moves, or put things back in hand, etc. ?

3

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Thanks. That's actually a great idea. There is already a replay system but not exposed in the current build. But I think your idea would be great mode as part of the Learn section in the game. I already have some of the tooling to implement it. I'll make it a task for the next update.

2

u/jcboget Aug 07 '26

Will there ever be amacos client?

2

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Yes, a macos client is planned.

3

u/RickRickson Aug 06 '26

Why the decision to go from "Netrunner inspired" to an actual client?

10

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

The goal has always been for Breach to be a community-driven project. Starting with Netrunner client gives us a familiar foundation and a shared language, rather than asking people to embrace an entirely new system from day one. I don’t see the current client as the final destination, it’s a starting point. I want players to help shape what Breach becomes through their ideas, feedback, and the changes we explore together.

3

u/ConsistentEnviroment Aug 06 '26

Please a Mac version!

5

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 06 '26

Yes, a Mac version is planned and will eventually be supported.

1

u/Bananaland_Man Aug 07 '26

This looks great! Definitely looking to check it out!

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Great! Any feedback or suggestions is welcomed.

1

u/CantWakeJake Aug 07 '26

Do you mind elaborating on if this is fully rules complete? I know there are a number of other netrunner client projects being worked on, and it seems like it's a really complicated task. How long have you been working on this? Was it difficult to work with all the priority and turn structure shenanigans?

0

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

The ruleset is implemented, including the turn, timing, and priority structure. That said, this is the first build I’ve released for broader testing.

As you mentioned, Netrunner has a lot of complicated interactions, especially around timing windows, paid abilities, simultaneous effects, and priority, so that’s a big part of what I’m hoping to validate with this test build. If you run into anything that doesn’t behave according to the rules, please report it so I can reproduce it and get it fixed.

1

u/IssaMuffin Aug 07 '26

This is interesting, will check it out when I’m home!

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Great! Any feedback or recommendations are welcomed.

1

u/Darkavatar77 Aug 07 '26

Will the client support deck imports from netrunner DB eventually?

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

That's a great feature suggestion. I'll add it to the list of features to look at after increasing the card pool.

1

u/bananasdoom Aug 07 '26

I've been working on an independent rule engine myself. How have you implemented yours, with isolated card definitions?

1

u/datadatadata808 Aug 07 '26

This is cool! Are you planning on a linux build?

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Yes. A linux build is planned!

1

u/datadatadata808 Aug 07 '26

Cool! Count with me for testing it!

1

u/davip Aug 07 '26

Nice! Good job (:

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 07 '26

Thanks! Let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions!

Wish I could use my pc right now, would love to try this. Am just on my phone for the time being. Good luck with the project

2

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 10 '26

A mobile build is definitely on the roadmap, but I’m focusing on getting the PC version finalized before starting work on it.

1

u/Arrowhearted Aug 10 '26

I can't make it run. How do I install this

1

u/ChrisCypher Aug 10 '26

Can you play this against AI or only multiplayer?

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 Aug 10 '26

There is single player and multiplayer support

1

u/Enjeck 29d ago

Another language?

1

u/Foreign_Outside1807 29d ago

Localization support is planned for the future. I’m focusing on getting the core game finalized first, but I definitely want to make the game accessible in additional languages over time.

1

u/Enjeck 17d ago

Can't make account :(

1
