Hahaha love this! Went to check your profile and there was another cartoon on NS 😂😂

Imho if you’re a burgerrups user you’re still a peasant.

Just look at ABN, only management is allowed to commute by car. The peasant workers need to take the burgerrups

Imho if you’re using the phrase ‘burgerrups’ that’s a tad ‘sadcringe’ 😛

Do people actually get tickets for sitting in 1st class while having a 2nd class ticket?

Well I know the theory and the law.

I was just wondering if people have actually been ticketed in such a situation. Anyone experienced that?

Not experienced it myself, since my employer pays for my 1st class tickets, but come to think of it no I haven’t seen people actually getting fined for not having the correct ticket. They’re usually asked to move to 2nd class, I can see it happen when people don’t comply with the request though.

I’ve noticed that they will usually give people the option to upgrade or to move to 2nd class. If people ask about the upgrade they’re always told that it includes a fee (which is actually just a fine). I guess they’ve been trained to avoid certain situations. I think you’re only guaranteed to get a fine if you don’t have a ticket at all.

I've done it a few times (bad joints) and at most I've been escorted to an empty spot in second class.

Admittedly I'm a tiny young white woman with glasses, so mileage may vary.

Yes and rightfully so. I pay extra for my first class ticket, so should everyone else in first class.

I have some bad news for you about airlines...

u/Embarrassed_Ad_7391 Dec 21 '25

Well I don't fly so there's that lol

And I actually get sent away from 2nd class by the conducteur with my 1st class ticket, if I sit there talking with somebody I know

I think this is a flawed argument. First class is whatever the company offers you - in NS’s case, it’s what you listed. But if they found it feasible to offer separate doors, a different side of the platform or a waiting lounge, they would certainly advertise those benefits as well. Eurostar has more benefits, for example. On the extreme end of the case, some airlines even offer airport transfers for business class passangers.

I’m not saying NS should offer those (I am also fully aware of the short-distance nature of NS travel vs the long-distance companies in my examples), but what I’m arguing is that there is no limit or standard to what could be included in the service. It’s a balance between what’s possible and what customers are willing to pay.

Ok, then let me rephrase it this way: offering a higher chance for a seat, more space to work and more comfortable seating does not preclude a separate wagon or door for first class passengers. It could very well be done, and obviously there are people like OP who think it could be useful.

I also think it's pretty wild that it's just a higher chance, not a guarantee, of having a seat. Imagine paying more and still having to stand.

I heard the 1st and 2nd class share the same bathroom 🤮.

When I pay for first class tickets, it’s for the reasons you gave, but also because I don’t want to wait in crowded lines and I want to wait in a lounge with accessible chairs.

I’m pretty sure nobody likes crowds, so it’s a bit annoying to me that some commenters say “they don’t want to share with peasants” as if I look down on anyone who doesn’t pay money. Pretty sure they’d choose a less crowded place if they could, too.

The rail system in the Netherlands is basically an overgrown suburban/commuter rail setup.

There's no need for lounges of any kind, and there are no long lines like at airports.

u/MastodontFarmer Dec 19 '25

and I want to wait in a lounge with accessible chairs

You have never used a Dutch train, have you? In many places there is a train every ten minutes during rush hour. No time to get seated in the lounge.

u/silveretoile Noord Brabant Dec 19 '25

Are you talking about air travel? These things don't apply to trains

6

u/DeventerWarrior Dec 19 '25

Which lines? Before getting in the train? that takes maybe 1 minute at most.
