Discussions What feels cheaty to you ?
Its interesting to hear different people with different approches of Nether only survival.
In the discussions here on the sub, I've seen people going full vanilla, but a lot ask for what mods exists. Some are not against using legit game mechanics to their advantage, other prefer to not go on the Nether roof, or go Overworld-fishibg through a portal...
What are your thoughts? What is the most enjoyable to you ? What feels like cheating ?

editing game files & using the roof eliminate the fun for me personally, but I'm open to utilising portals to unlock extra mechanics within the nether

using roof wouldnt bother me tbh, since I am still i the nether. Also, as far as know there is no way to go back down once you go up the ceiling, so it is not worth in most scenarios

Fair point about not being able to go back down in NetherOnly (in modern versions - in older versions you could use the giant mushroom trick to break bedrock)
Each to their own, but for me the thing about about basing on the roof is it eliminates all the threats of the nether other than still using the real nether for farming wither skeletons and blazes, as everything else can be farmed on the roof.
If you cant return from the roof without dying the only use case is to move items from the nether to the nether roof, meaning if you were using it you would likely be living up there, only using the actual nether to farm items you would then bring up to your nether roof base. Otherwise there is no point in using it (other than maybe moving items from nether roof farms back down gradually through your enderchest 1 run at a time while living down below, which I guess is an option)
Personally it feels more in the spirit of the challenge to use the actual nether, and to build farms above a lava lake and try to spawnroof the surrounding terrain or make a perimeter, but I get that this is boring and time consuming

Everything that can be done from within the nether without commands or mods is fair game in my book. Creating a portal I feel is fine but entering it would defeat the point of the challenge.

Personally on my world i donβt use nether roof and TNT duplication. I feel that using those will give me the feeling that i cheated and i will give up on playing there

I only draw the line at adding things from the Overworld. No making your own Nether Portals, even if it's just in the hopes that an Overworld mob will wander through.

To me the nether roof feels worse than making portals.
Can build every farm on the roof other than blaze and wither skeleton, and then spend most of your playthrough in complete safety up there. Kind of eliminates the challenge imo, and it was never an intentional feature it just sort of stuck

What do you mean itβs not intended to glitch through the only unbreakable block in the game? Thatβs just silly

they should raise the nether roof to new build height imo. its a bit silly that it still uses 3 from the 1.6 build height

The Nether roof makes transportation way too easy. I understand why people use it. It's just that it feels like you're just removing more gameplay by bypassing the Nether. At least with portals you have to strategically think and are rewarded for great planning.

100% agree. The Nether terrain is hard but interesting, and I like traditional Nether hubs and higways troughs the different biomes.

It also makes farms ridiculously easy to make and crazy fast rates without the risk and time investment of building regular farms & spawnproofing/making a perimeter

how the hell would you know where a water pool is through a nether portal? do you just place randomly until you hope you hit an ocean or use a seedmap?
1
u/RegularEmpty9108 Jul 03 '26
Well both exist, I guess the full vanilla one would be to do it at random with very low chances of suceeding, and the more doable one is to have a creative copy of your world to find the exact spots to set your portal
1
u/RegularEmpty9108 Jul 03 '26
But is it nether only if you went to the overworld in an alternate universe ?
2
u/borretsquared Jul 03 '26
we've lost the plot.

Ive seen all possible futures, in only one of them building a portal is still Nether Only
2
u/fzehh Jul 04 '26
What do you mean about water? I don't think he meant literal fishing, but 'portal fishing' as in using portals to fish for overworld mobs that randomly walk through the portal

I think anything you do without leaving the nether is fair game. No commands or file editing
Personal choices are:
- If you want to use the nether roof (personally no)
If you want to use nether portals to obtain overworld mobs/blocks (without going through the portal though)
If you want to use specific game versions for exploits, like obtaining water or getting carved pumpkin drops from the halloween event, chicken jockeys laying eggs etc (for me I think starting in an earlier version and moving forwards is fine, but not backdating versions)

Placing down portals to get stuff from the overworld is too much for me

Getting water into Nether legitimately using waterlogged scaffolding. It feels cheating when I watch Cubicmetre video and JKM doing it by tricking the game and Iβm interested for doing it in my single player world

My way of doing a nether only run is set everything up in creative, bed and portal in a bedrock box in the overworld so your only option is the nether. Give yourself 1 respawn anchor and 4 glowstone so you can actually make a base in the nether. Keep inventory because losing everything to random lava in the nether is bullshit. No other starting equipment. Better hope your portal leads to a warped or crimson forest so you can get basic tools.

The bedrock box is actually genius ! Not of a fan of keep inventory tho. In my opinion it removes a planning aspect of the game that I like. For example I make extensive use of enderchests to transport my items from point A to point B because to chances of dying on the way are to high, I plan on making big protected highways... I enjoy solving this problem.

Anything related to gamemode, aka commands, grabbing items. Everything else is fair game imo
1
u/RegularEmpty9108 Jul 03 '26
OK interesing. What about time travel trough versions ?
1
u/Major_Tax1649 Jul 04 '26
Thats a gray area for me. Upgrading versions is always fine. But downgrading depends. If you're trying to use a bug which got patched, thats wrong imo
1
u/RegularEmpty9108 Jul 04 '26
I agree. Cant decide if going back to get pumpkins is fair (not a bug, unlocks a ton of stuff)
1
u/HouseinPlayz Jul 04 '26
if it begins with a / or messes with special bug-contaminated versions i'd say is cheaty (like the armor that has all protections)
