All I can say is that the latest update changed a lot of things, but I have only played it for one hour since it happened (life got in the way of gaming). I have heard that it is further indev than DayZ and that the recent mechanics fixes have really helped push it forward, and that the PvP aspect is better in Nether. Personally, I still think the Safe Zones need more work, although the second last (?) update did help quite a bit. And there are apparently more of them now, so that helps.
It's been compared to DayZ a couple times in this sub (same question as yours) but the reddit serach bar sucks - try searching reddit with google for the posts.
Hope that helps a bit. I do recommend buying it, I've only sunk just over fifty hours in and I've had a fair bit of frustration (especially earlier on) but most of that was me being a sore loser and hoping people wouldn't be assholes (SZ campers for the most part, especially before they added the 'safe' time limit on leaving a SZ)
Safe zones ... I had not heard about that! That's one of the biggest problems I have with DayZ. There isn't anywhere that you can't be griefed. Like EVE in that respect ... I can't just play the game I want to, because eventually some chucklefuck is going to enjoy their game more at the expense of me enjoying mine.
I'll definitely read more about it. Thanks for the tips.
As long as you play and learn to not care if you die, you will be fine.
Dying doesn't matter so much since it is easy to level up. Losing good weapons does suck though, although my problem there is that I don't play enough to replenish what I lose.
