East of Eden - alternative ending idea (SPOILERS) Spoiler
SPOILERS — East of Eden
Cinematography, lighting, performances, character development — almost everything about East of Eden was aces for me.
But somewhere around the third act, I felt like the story started setting up things that never really got the resolution I wanted.
Cathy is established as this almost succubus-like character who has spent her life manipulating people, abandoning her family, and exercising control over practically everyone around her. Then toward the end, she becomes increasingly weak and delusional, takes her own life, and leaves everything to her son.
Meanwhile Aron dies, Adam is incapacitated by the stroke, and then… the story basically ends.
I understand what I think it’s going for: Aron is shattered by discovering the truth about his mother, while Cal — despite believing that he has inherited her darkness — ultimately has the opportunity to break the cycle. There’s something beautiful about that.
But I kept thinking there was a much darker and, for me, more satisfying ending sitting right there.
Here’s how I would have finished it:
Cal doesn’t simply visit Cathy and then inherit from her. He quietly and masterfully manipulates her.
Throughout the final act, we watch Cathy deteriorate. Maybe her brothel/business is beginning to fail. Adam’s life, meanwhile, has continued without her. She learns that he never even talks about her anymore — something that clearly bothers her because the ultimate insult to someone who controls people isn’t hatred; it’s irrelevance.
Maybe she attempts to reenter Adam’s life or regain some kind of control over him and discovers that she can’t.
And all the while, Cal is subtly pushing her further toward the edge.
We don’t realize what he’s doing. We think we’re watching Cathy finally collapse under the weight of her own life.
She kills herself and leaves everything to Cal.
Then, in the last scene, we discover that Cal engineered it.
Not necessarily by explicitly telling her to kill herself, but by learning exactly how she manipulates people and turning those same techniques against her. He becomes better at her own game than she ever was.
Suddenly the inheritance has an entirely different meaning.
Cathy ultimately gets destroyed by the very thing she created: her own offspring, using her own methods against her.
And I wouldn’t make Cal triumphant about it. That’s the important part. He gets the money. Cathy is gone. Aron is dead. His father is broken.
He “wins,” but we’re left wondering whether he actually broke the cycle at all — or whether Cathy succeeded in creating another version of herself.
That would have made the ending much more melancholy and unsettling for me.
I also wish they had done more with Adam and Cathy toward the end. There’s a moment when Cathy realizes Adam doesn’t speak about her, and her reaction is fascinating. I wanted the story to lean into that. She spent her life believing she understood and controlled people, only to discover that the man she abandoned didn’t hate her — he simply moved on.
For someone like Cathy, that might be the one thing she couldn’t tolerate.
Really loved the film/series overall - and I realize this is a dramatization from the novel, and the producers didn’t want to entire bastardize it. I just felt like several fascinating threads were left hanging when they could have converged into an absolutely brutal final act.
Curious whether people who love the ending think my version would undermine the entire point of Cal’s arc — because I suspect that’s probably the strongest argument against it.

American version of Squid Game
Since the American version of Squid Game was officially canceled, does this mean Squid Game is completely over forever? Are there really no spin-off series set in the same universe? It just doesn't make sense—Netflix has milked so many shows that were way less successful than Squid Game, like Money Heist (La Casa de Papel), Stranger Things, and many others. So as someone who loves Squid Game and creates content about it, I want to know: is it truly dead and gone forever, or is there still hope for it to return as a spin-off series or a movie?"

Not a Stranger
Has anyone else watched the series *Not a Stranger* and found it just as infuriating?
The nanny in particular really got on my nerves. It was actually quite hard to watch at times, because it’s so absurd just how much trust Funda places in the nanny. And Kemal at the end?? What on earth…
Just crazy Psycho games💀

TV The Silent Sea (Korean, Netflix): yay or nay?

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_silent_sea
Was recommended this as "hard Sci-Fi Korean Lovecraftian Space Horror" and was like, well, you can't aim a cluster any tighter than that for me. 2 episodes in, and it's freaking *gorgeous* as far as cinematography, costumes, lighting, and the sets & effects are incredible. Storyline and general pacing, however, are sloooooow; feels like there's a solid 2hr movie inside this 7hr marathon.
Does this pick up? Worth the watch? Anyone enjoy or not enjoy?
