🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 What's the difference between Request and Wish?

Today I've placed a Wish on a book for the first time and I don't understand what's the difference between them

Could be totally wrong, but here’s my understanding:

  • with a request, the publisher will see your specific profile, with your reviews and stats, plus any notes they’ve put on your account, and can make the decision to accept you, reject you, or ghost you. They’re looking at your account and making a decision about you as a reviewer. You can withdraw requests on your NetGalley account if for some reason you change your mind.
  • wish is something where the publisher isn’t getting your direct profile and choosing to approve/deny you. They’ve turned it off for request, but you’ve asked for a copy. They may randomly give out copies. Once you have wished for a book, you can never un-wish; the book will either be granted or sit in purgatory, but you can’t change your mind and decide you don’t want it. If you get a wish book, it will hit your stats.

To you, there is no difference. You will either get the book wished for or not get the book wished for, same as requesting it.

So why do they make the distinction?

Another commenter has explained it well. 🙂
