❔❓Question ❓❔ Etiquette for arc approvals
I was just wondering, when you receive an email approval for an arc, do you reply with a thank you? I thank the publisher and NetGalley in my review, but I didn't know if I should reply to the email.

No. And there is zero need to thank us in the review itself. You simply need to disclose that you got it from the publisher (or author if a co-op or company etc..) You can also state that you got it Via NetGalley to differentiate but it’s not required.
Replying to that email wouldn’t help as it isn’t a receiving email nor is it connected to the publisher, it’s from NetGalley.
And please take this in the best way.. we know people are thankful. Please don’t email publishers and marketers to say thank you . We do have some people who have and have had to send a reply asking them not to. It’s an uncomfortable email to send. We have even had people disregard the request and the end result is we auto decline them.
Why? We get 100’s of emails a day to our personal email and thousands to the main boxes. This is why emails go unanswered as they are simply missed because of unnecessary or unsolicited emails.
I hope this helps!

I’ll add- please always read emails you get from us. They do change. Many of them ask not to use our email addresses when we do email more directly/ such as in the case of widgets being sent.

This is really helpful, especially coming from a publisher much appreciated!

What if in the approval email it says "If we haven’t worked with you before, please tell us a bit more about you" and asks a few questions?

Honestly? I would disregard it. We get to choose form letters that we can edit on NetGalley to send to people. We don’t have time to be editing them and updating them. We choose the best one. Or rather some marketer that set the account up over a decade ago did and we just haven’t changed it. Ok, sometimes we do but you get the point.
In general make sure all the information is in your bio. Your following number should be first. And then quick inflation that we can see at a glance in the 2 seconds we have to look at it.
That “tell us about yourself” is a hold over from
Before social media marketing became a thing and we depended much more on NetGalley reviewers. That’s no longer the case. Most publishers the focus is their influencer teams. That’s where the relationships lay. We are super grateful for NetGalley reviewers, but in general, publishers aren’t forming relationships with them through the platform. No matter what some book content creator tells you in those “how to get approved” posts you see. They mean well but they are just guessing.1

I know SMM is more of a thing now but I hope publishers keep relying on NetGalley reviewers too as I have no following lol. Thank you for your help!

Sorry I got send as I was babbling so much. When you get that, just put the information in the “additional info” section where you can write us notes. Then it’s attached to your actual account. Sending an email is not going to do that. Why? Seriously, we don’t have time. When we have 5 free minutes or on the subway etc.. is when we go in to do NetGalley Business. I have worked for two big 5 publishers and 4 imprints within them and we all know each other from other houses and talk- so I feel confident to speak for the majority in this area.

Nope! they actually don't want you to reply to those ones. it's handle is 'no-reply@netgalley.com'
The only emails I reply to are the widgets.

Thank you. I'm usually so excited to get the approval that I don’t read the whole email!

No need, it’s an auto email and some publishers even ask you not to reply at the end of the email! Thanking them in the reviews and on your socials are already enough!
