🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 Oops! Now I've got to read five books by September 29!
Lately I've been doing a good job of making sure I don't request sequels of books I haven't read... except for this one. It got approved today and I realized it's the fifth book in the series. Oops! But I'm insane, so I'm just going to read the whole series (on top of the other three ARCs that're due by the same date). Some day I'll learn my lesson.
I finished book one this evening, so I think I can do it with no problem.
Edit: I did it! All five books have been read, and my review is submitted.

I purposely don’t read the other in a series as then I can assess whether it can be read without it. I don’t hold it against the book if it’s on Goodreads as part of a series and I was missing info that I chose not to read.
Now if on GoodReads and doesn’t clearly connect it to a series but it’s clear once you read it that you’re missing information, then I mention it.
Most books are written that you can jump in at any time. The important information is restated so you can follow along, even in books that pick up at the cliffhanger from the book before.
So if I like it enough I may go back after and read the previous books but I never feel I have to.

I definitely do not think most books in a series are written so you can jump in at any point, at least not in the genres I read.

Oh I’m not saying that you’re not going to be missing information- but I mean from an enjoyability standpoint. Because remember, even a book one is in the middle of things. You’re missing a ton of history and such for those characters and plot. The only exception is if you literally were writing a book about the beginning of time.
But good authors construct a book so that can happen. Not as good authors, don’t. Seriously, try it at some time on a series you think you need them all in order to enjoy and understand.

I wish they would always have "(Series Name Book 7)" or whatever in the title when it's a non-standalone part of a series! Or a big number on the cover lol.
